Barnabas and Julia now sound like the parents of a teenager. He shouldn’t have been allowed in here, Julia tells Barnabas. He won’t listen to reason, Barnabas replies.

Carolyn tells Adam about her rather trippy delirium in the lab, where she seemed to see disconnected body parts.

Is Carolyn dead? Everyone seems to think so, and she certainly looks it. Adam is sure that Barn and Julia are to blame and promises to make them and all the Collinses pay. Fed up with Adam’s threats, Barnabas retorts, You think no one else will miss her, only you--because you think it is your loss. Well, it isn’t. She is part of me, not you. She is one of my family, and I feel as deeply about her as you _think_ you do. You were the one who wanted her as a life force. If anyone killed her, it was you. Barnabas’s words only make Adam angrier, and he reiterates his threat. Barnabas tries to keep Adam away from the stairs, but gets beaten up for his pains (and takes his own fall partway down the basement stairs).

But when Julia goes up to Josette's room to get her medical bag, both Carolyn and the multicolor afghan are gone....

The scene between Carolyn and Adam is very well written and very well done. Kudos to RR and NB.

Good point, MT! I also remember that in Julia's first experiment with Barnabas, he's sitting in a chair several feet away from the bubbling, bubbling apparatus but not connected to it in any way! Maybe in the Collinwood universe, these things happen by osmosis.  [hall2_grin]

That's what I love about it! Well, one of the things I love about it.

After Roger drives her to tears, Carolyn sets a new record for the fastest departure from Collinwood--she leaves the house by the front door (carrying a suitcase) and less than five seconds later we hear her car driving off.

I agree, MT. That was a missed opportunity. But later, Barnabas returns to the Old House--and finds Carolyn calmly waiting for him with the stunning announcement that she is volunteering for the experiment. Apparently when Nicholas hypnotized her, he telepathically informed her of how Adam came into being. She seems to know but doesn't mind.

Meanwhile, Willie lights a cigarette off one of the candles in the secret room at the mausoleum as he tries to tell Maggie that the police will think she's crazy if she tells them about Barnabas. But she remembers everything--including that Willie helped Barnabas. She suspects Willie of being "like Him." Willie reaches out his hand so that she'll feel his human warmth, but she promptly faints, and he's able to leave without revealing the mechanism for opening the panel.

While Barnabas is thinking over everything Carolyn said, Willie bursts into the Old House in total panic. Barnabas doesn’t let Willie get a word in. Coldly he tells Willie, Adam tried to kill Vicki--and if Vicki had died, you would have been responsible. Barnabas makes one more attempt to strangle Willie, but Willie shrieks, Barnabas, please listen to me! Maggie remembers the Old House, she remembers everything--what you were! If she tells the police they’re gonna come here! They’re gonna get you, Barnabas, and they’re gonna destroy you!

At the mausoleum, Maggie’s flashbacks continue (recreated in color, as in the previous episode).

Carolyn is wearing a beautiful royal blue brocaded velvet dress when Nicholas arrives to hypnotize her into being the subject of the experiment. I remember feeling slightly hypnotized myself!

Willie returns to the mausoleum to take Maggie home, but she stops him cold when she asks, Who was Josette? He listens in horror as she recounts events at the Old House exactly as they happened, up to and including Barnabas's bringing her to the mausoleum to teach her a lesson. He goes to close the door to the secret room, but while his back is turned, Maggie makes a run for the door. He easily grabs her and bites her throat (an especially scary bite). Then he locks her in the coffin.

Back in the present, Willie is horrified when Maggie screams, I remember everything! I know! I know what Barnabas Collins is!...

That's my fave too! But I also remember a moment when Barnabas is talking and a very determined fly is hell bent on having its closeup too. Sorry I don't recall the timeline or anything, but it was funny.

If I remember, the very first fly made a cameo appearance in an early episode, in Burke's suite at the Collinsport Inn.

Adam finally learns the complete history of how he came to exist--except for one thing. His keen intelligence brings him to the natural conclusion: How could you hate yourself so much that you wanted to change your body? There’s no need to go into that now, Barnabas answers dismissively, it’s past history. You didn’t die, Adam observes. Because Julia didn’t do the experiment as originally planned, Barnabas answers. Does she know what she did? is Adam’s next question. Yes, answers Barnabas, and asks Adam to wait till they find Maggie Evans. But Adam insists that Carolyn will provide the life force: I remember a day when you controlled both Willie and me, he comments. We did anything you wanted. We will use Carolyn. Maggie Evans can stay wherever she is.

I love the scenes with Maggie and Willie. And yes, they reshot all the scenes of her captivity so that they're now in color. Her dress, which we see in the last scene, peeps out from under the collar of her robe.

Adam gives Nicholas an argument when Nicholas insists on talking to Carolyn alone. Nicholas says, It would be better if you weren’t there. You’d be too emotional--anyone in your position would be. Adam grabs Nicholas’s arm, and Nicholas coldly orders him to let go. We don’t find out what might happen next because they hear someone coming--it’s Willie. Nicholas tells Adam to hide, explaining, I have a way with people, Adam. Then he demonstrates his power by putting the eye on Willie. It’s all right to let Maggie go, he tells Willie. She’s no longer in any danger. Hey, you know just about everything, doncha? Willie asks foggily. I’m much too modest to admit that, Nicholas tells him without a shred of modesty. Willie goes off to obey Nicholas’s order; Nicholas looks pleased.

Welcome, Ronny G!

I love the idea of Nicholas just poofing himself wherever he needs to be. I guess if he had a car, it would be a silver Jaguar, and he probably would drive extremely fast.

Adam chokes Vicki into unconsciousness--and then is horrified at this, his first violent act. He wipes his hands on the green sweater as if he could remove his guilt that way.

As he sits by Vicki's side, awash in guilt and fear, Barnabas blames himself and wonders if the curse is still in force after 200 years. Carolyn refuses to believe that Adam was the attacker.

Carolyn doesn’t believe Adam attacked Vicki--what would his motive be?--so she is calling the police when Nicholas, his usual dapper self even at this hour, materializes beside her. He dissuades her from talking to the police by taking the receiver and hanging it up. How dare you! she rages and tells him that Adam has just attacked Vicki. Nicholas points out that she has no proof except for Barnabas's say-so. Carolyn goes back upstairs and demands to know why Barnabas thinks he (A.) was. Barnabas pleads exhaustion and worry and promises to answer her questions later. Yes, later, Carolyn replies with all of Elizabeth's own imperiousnessness.

Nicholas heads for the West Wing and scolds Adam for almost ruining the experiment. Nicholas is taken aback when Adam tells him that Maggie is to provide the life force. With a flash of perception, Adam suggests that Nicholas is in love with Maggie. (Adam is just as much of a romantic as Barnabas!) Nicholas denies it, saying, LOVE is a word I do not use. When Carolyn comes to see Adam, he denies attacking Vicki--his second lie to his little blond goddess. Nicholas assures him it wasn't a lie and coaches him in what to say to Barnabas.

Great job by RR in the last scene: When Barnabas gets home, Adam is waiting for him, calmly sitting by the fire and playing solitaire. Barnabas refuses to sit and listen at first, but with great dignity Adam says, When I first knew you, I never thought I could be the gentleman that you are. You are a very imposing man, Barnabas, and I still find it difficult not to be frightened by your manner. Barnabas finally sits and listens in astonishment when Adam continues in the same calm and dignified manner, I have decided to believe you. I have chosen the woman who will give her life force to my mate, and she is not a stranger. When Barnabas asks who it will be, Adam replies calmly, She is the only woman I will ever love--Carolyn Stoddard....

Interesting thought about JF, Magnus. I guess he thought that some storylines weren't worth that much bother. Can't say I blame him on this one.

About Adam: My notes indicate that he's looking in on the sleeping Vicki from the outside. Her room is upstairs, but maybe there's a convenient ledge outside for Adam to stand on? Or is it just another example of the craziness of this story line? In any case, when Barnabas arrives, he comes in through the front door with no trouble at all.

Adam is understandably quite annoyed when the experiment can't be done tonight. Barnabas tells Julia to go, still thinking he can keep Adam at bay long enough for Julia to take Vicki away from Collinwood. [He commits a classic blooper--doubtless due to the stress of the situation--when he tells Julia, "You know what to do now Mag-- Vicki-- you know what to do now Julia, go--now!"

But Adam quickly disarms Barnabas (the prop gun falls apart) and goes after Julia, whom he also overpowers somewhere in the woods. Characteristically, she’s still trying to scream even when he covers her mouth with his hand.

Adam's next stop is Collinwood, where he climbs up the outside wall (off camera) to Vicki's room. I don’t hate you, he tells her in silent apology, but you’re the one Barnabas loves.

Barnabas arrives at Collinwood to find the ground floor deserted, since everyone is sleeping (for once). He takes the stairs two at a time.

Still gazing down at the sleeping Vicki, Adam continues, Barnabas must know what it is like to be alone. He has condemned me to being alone, so he must be alone too. Barnabas pounds on Vicki’s door, calling her name. But she is unable to answer him because Adam grabs her from behind and wraps his powerful fingers around her throat....

Maggie revives in the secret room. She looks around--and starts screaming when she sees a coffin. Since Barnabas no longer needs it, one presumes it was put there for safekeeping while Julia's experiment took over the cellar of the Old House.

Willie tries to calm Maggie down, but things only get worse when she starts to remember that Julia brought her here to test her memory. This whole flashback had to be reshot in color.

MT, good comment on Barnabas's smarts vs. Willie's tailfirst attempt at problem solving.

Barnabas stops Willie just in time, but when Willie says he won't mess with the experiment if Barnabas uses somebody else, Barnabas hedges.

Maggie and Vicki have coffee on the terrace and commiserate about their busted romances. Barnabas arrives, and Maggie leaves shortly after. Barnabas offers Vicki his friendship. I won’t let any harm come to you, he promises, all the while looking directly at Adam, who is watching and listening from the other side of the terrace gate.

Willie tries to give Maggie $50 (which must have been a lot of money for him, especially in 1968) to leave town, but she tells him she's staying put.

That evening, Adam catches Barnabas leaving the Great House via the terrace. Why aren’t you working? he asks with some of Barnabas’s own imperiousness. With his usual directness, he says, You see the woman you love, while I am still alone. Should I go up to Victoria Winters’s room now? Should I kill her now?

Later, Willie solves the problem of Maggie in his own special way. When Barnabas arrives at the cottage and finds it empty, Adam's words echo in his mind....
