What a drastic and vivid change newly vampire Barnabas from the human Barnabas! JF portrayed this change so perfectly. Regret, sorrow, anger, shock  and fear, all sum up what Barnabas is feeling. I still am curious as to what effect the curse has on Barnabas's mind, as we can see here, and indeed in episodes to come, that it does effect him emotionally.

Poor Ben, trying to comprehend what has happened to Barnabas, and Barnabas himself fearfully figuring out bit by bit of his cursed existence, it's just sad for everyone involved.  [hall2_sad]

I very much enjoyed the hushed tone in which KLS delivered the voice-over.

I hated the way Joshua was so cold and rude to Ben. I realize he has his grief to deal with, but Ben didn't deserve to be treated in such a harsh way, especially since he only wanted to grieve for Barnabas.  [hall2_sad]

Despite her brief marriage to Barnabas, Angelique doesn't get treated like a lady, at least not where Joshua is concerned. That still seems to be her driving motive, to be in the upper class of society, and she seems  jealous of not attaining that status after all her planning and scheming.

This is one of the most touching and heart-wrenching episodes of the entire series. The acting was superb by all!

It's one of my favorite episodes, and because I'm a hopeless romantic, I loved the last moments Josette and Barnabas had together.  [hall2_sad] [hall2_cry]

Poor Naomi and Joshua, all this tragedy heaped upon them, and they're helpless to stop it.

Why would a french countess have any influence over anyone in the newly independent  U.S.?

I liked the doctor in this episode.

Poor Barnabas, unable to say anything about Angelique, it's quite heroic actually.  [hall2_cool]

It's a good thing Barnabas's illness took place in the eighteenth century rather than now, otherwise Angelique would have had no way to explain what happened to him. I wonder how she would have covered her tracks then?

I wish Josette would have found out Angelique was the witch, I would have really loved to see the two of them have it out!

When they finished this episode, did Jonathan Frid straighten up and walk off to his dressing room, wiping the fake sweat from his face?  I find it hard to believe.  He makes it seem more likely that he just collapsed on the floor and said, "OK, I did your damned show for you.  Now get me a doctor!"  I don't think I've ever seen an actor play a sick man as well as Frid did.

I agree with you Lydia. He does excellent and heart-wrenching scenes.

Something about Frid's bare feet makes me say: "Now there's a devoted actor!"  Other actors can go stark naked and not impress me particularly, but Frid's bare feet strike me as evidence of true commitment to his craft.  I'm not really sure why.

Thanks for this tidbit of very interesting info, Lydia!  [hall2_cool]

Naomi's dress was very pretty, I thought.  After all the bright colors of 1795, it's nice to see that silvery gray.  And the lace at the end of the sleeves was beautiful.

Thanks also for the description of Naomi's dress.

Good old Angelique.  She puts the curse on Barnabas, and then she blames Barnabas for making her do it.  I was starting to feel sorry her her, thinking that she might be regretting her actions - and then she started in on the not-my-faulting.  I should have seen it coming.

Yes, I too was wondering about her sincerity to cure him, but as you said, she prefers to blame everyone but herself.

Sweet loyal Ben to the rescue!!  [hall2_cool] He's always there when Barnabas needs him. I love how he became so angry with Angelique, but in the end as usual, she gets her own way. This episode is great!

How far away does a witch have to be from her victim in order for a spell to take effect? Obviously, Angelique couldn't harm Josette from such a great distance. Or maybe knowing the location of one's victim would be sufficient, and the distance between them doesn't really matter.

In a previous episode, Angelique was able to force Barnabas to drop the knife he was threatening her with. But now she can't even stop him from shooting her? Perhaps she can't perform two spells at once. Too bad she hasn't learned how to multitask.  [hall_grin]

Excellent excellent episode!  [hall2_cool]

It was nice and quite selfless of Barnabas to help Vicki even in the midst of his own troubles.

I actually like Peter Bradford.

I can't believe Angelique is blaming Barnabas for all the witchcraft that has happened, simply because he wouldn't love her. Give me a break!

Spoiler:

I wonder if that bat at the end of the episode was the same bat that will soon turn Barnabas in to a vampire.

Poor Naomi seems so unhappy in this episode. I really feel bad for her.

Barnabas tells Angelique he has received a package, a wedding present, and she bitterly says yes, but that it's not for them, as if she really expected it to be.

I'm glad we were able to hear the clock in this episode. It sounds so majestic coming from a distance as it did.

Another fun part of this episode is when Barnabas uses reverse psychology on Ben, putting him on the biggest guilt trip ever!

How did the designers make the jug or vase or whatever it was, look like it crashed over barnabas's head and break? Obviously JF wasn't really hit with it.  [hall_huh]

Vicki is describing last night's events in her room, and when Trask mentioned fire, she saw a fire starting to burn. Hey, I know, maybe Trask is the witch! LOL!  [8_1_202]

I loved how the writers tied this episode in with previous episodes where we see Barnabas teaching Ben to write. It was so neatly integrated, it makes me wonder if they had planned in advance for this scene.

The suspense when Ben was writing the initial was so intense. Great performances by all!

Angelique seemed almost fearful of the exorcism, trying to convince those cards and herself that it could have no power over her.

I thought it was funny when Trask began the exorcism, Barnabas says he has better things to do and walks away.

I wonder why Angelique wants to revive some of the old customs. that seems to imply she has no intentions of ever giving up her witchcraft.

I was very amused by Joshua's impatience with Abigail at the beginning of this episode.

Sarah is always helping someone, whether in the present or the past.

I feel really bad for sarah, so lonely in that big house, with no clear understanding of why her governess and barnabas had to leave her.  [hall_sad]

The actress who plays Sarah did an excellent job of portraying her fear of Abigail when Abigail threatened her about telling lies.
