Calendar Events / Announcements '07 I / 2 New DS-related DVDs coming
« on: March 20, 2007, 01:34:57 AM »
 :D  Two 1972 TV-movies are coming soon to DVD, and both have DS actors in them.  Jon Frid was in "The Devil's Daughter," and Tom Happer was in "Crawlspace."  Both due May 1 from Wild Eye home entertainment (I can't find anything about this company on the web--anybody know who/what/where it is?)

Current Talk '07 I / DS Actors in BURNT OFFERINGS
« on: February 23, 2007, 04:53:18 AM »
MB, please move this to another thread as appropriate....but, what if DC had cast some or all of the roles in BURNT OFFERINGS with DS actors--and any number of those actors could have been effective in BO roles.  Here are my thoughts:

David Selby would have played the Oliver Reed role;
Kathryn Leigh Scott in the Karen Black role;
Thayer David or Louis Edmonds in the Burgess Meredith role;
Joan Bennett in the Eileen Heckert role; and
Grayson Hall in the Bette Davis role.

Calendar Events / Announcements '07 I / Donna McKechnie autobiography
« on: January 24, 2007, 04:25:36 AM »
 :D  I don't know if this has been posted here before, so please excuse my ignorance if it has been...but I have just finished reading Donna McKechnie's autobiography: "TIMESTEPS: My Musical Comedy Life", and though she only mentions DS in a few pages, I highly recommend this wonderful book to anyone who has interest in DS, Broadway, Musicals, Dancing...need I say more?  Donna McKechnie is truly a Broadway star, right up there with Gwen Verden and Chita Rivera, and her story if both enlightening and humbling.  Please do yourself a favor and have the pleasure of checking it out.

Current Talk '06 II / DS on widescreen HDTV
« on: October 01, 2006, 03:01:30 AM »
I've been watching the DS DVDs (now on 22), and sometimes I use the "zoom" feature on my 42" widescreen plasma TV, and--surprisingly--the show doesn't suffer too much from being enlarged to fill the screen.  Granted, it's not the original way the videographers intended it to be seen, but the original series' video wasn't exactly the most artistic in its capture of the picture.  It's actually enjoyable to watch this way....

Current Talk '06 II / "1995" episode 1062 Jean Flagler
« on: August 20, 2006, 04:50:38 AM »
I'm just getting around to watching the 1995 episodes on DVD, and # 1062, the one in which Julia and Barnabas interview Flagler, includes Julia holding up a framed picture of Mrs. Flagler, who looks very much like a young Shirley Grayson (aka Grayson Hall).  Does anyone know if the photo used was of Ms. Grayson?

Current Talk '06 II / DS revival series observation
« on: July 24, 2006, 01:28:12 AM »
Some time ago, I posted a comment about the DS revival series DVD collection, which was released in a matted 16x9 version.  Well, the DVD release looks great on a widescreen TV--even the original series (which was not exactly recorded with the screen composition as a top priority) looks good when zoomed to fit a 16x9 screen.

But that's not the intent of this message.  I think I may have posted this a long time ago--if so, please forgive me.  If not, then I'd like to hear from others about this:  in episode 1 of the revival series, at about 15 minutes and 30 seconds into the show, as Carolyn leads Vicki upstairs, we see a portrait of Ben Cross as Barnabas on the right side of the frame.  On the left is a portrait of another Collins ancestor, strongly resembling Thayer David.  Did anyone else notice this, and does anyone know if Mr. David is the subject in that portrait, perhaps as a tribute by DC?

Thanks,

Brian

Current Talk '06 II / Leviathan story vs 1970PT story
« on: July 09, 2006, 03:55:23 AM »
I know many fans have blamed the Leviathan storyline for the ultimate demise of DS, but having finally re-viewed (meaning I saw both storylines on TV way back in 1969-1970, and also on VHS some years ago via the MPI tapes) those episodes yet again, this time on the DVD releases (and because of this, I'm behind on viewing DVDs by 4 sets!), I find the 1970 PT shows very boring and difficult to get through due, in part, to the  overused REBECCA and JEKYLL AND HYDE references.  At least the Leviathan story referenced, in part, the weirdness of Lovecraft, whose work was not as well known as DuMaurier and Stevenson, and thus was more fresh.  I've decided that I actually prefer the Leviathan story to 1970 PT, as the PT story now (in hindsite, of course), really comes across as an excuse to take the main actors away while they filmed the movie.

That said, at least the PT story sets up the new character of Roxanne, who would be very important in the 1970 summer and subsequent 1840 stories.

Anyone else have thoughts to share?

Calendar Events / Announcements '06 I / Studio 54?
« on: June 30, 2006, 03:08:17 AM »
I'm watching a documentary (not a porn film!) called GAY SEX IN THE 70S.  Referenced halfway thru is a "former TV studio" that was transformed to the disco STUDIO 54.  Was this the old DS studios? does anyone know?

Current Talk '05 II / Why WB should release HODS on DVD
« on: October 10, 2005, 01:57:00 AM »
If Warners can spend the time and money to release NIGHT OF THE LEPUS on DVD, why the heck can't they do the same for HODS?  Granted, we're still waiting for the restoration of NODS, but a nice clean transfer of HODS would be most welcome.  And enough of the actors are still with us--maybe some could be hired to do a commentary track!  For more about LEPUS, check this link.

It's interesting that among Lara's comments on the new RACE WITH THE DEVIL DVD, she notes that she was three years older than Peter Fonda, who played her husband, and that she roomed briefly in college with his sister, Jane.  According to IMDB, Lara was born in 1942, Peter was born in 1940, and Jane in 1937.  Of course, Lara's revelation suggests that she was born in 1937, not 1942.  I seem to recall this information about Lara was made public some years ago, but it's nice to hear it finally confirmed.  No matter her age, she's still a beautiful lady!!  And her commentary on the DVD is quite fun.

As I (once again) watch Thayer David's work as Petofi, I can't help but think that he would have been nominated for a daytime Emmy, had they existed back in 1969.  His work is dark & menacing, but humorous, subtle. . .probably the best performance ever on DS.  Petofi and Thayer ROCK!!

From TV Guide Online:  Days of our Lives: Roger Davis portrays a deliveryman who arrives at St. Luke's Church on Dec. 24 and 27.

Does anyone know if this is OUR Roger Davis?  I've set my VCR just so I can check it out.

I recently purchased via eBay a DVD of this rare French film (aka Who Are You, Polly Maggoo?) that features Grayson Hall.  It's available at www.5minutestolive.com/1D/WHOAREYOU.htm.

All I can say is:  it's the 60s again, as we've never seen that decade, though.  If you think the DS fashions from 1966-1968 are wild--or even the 1970 summer sequence--wait till you see the fashions in this film.  Unfortunately, the print used for this DVD is not the best, and it's in B&W (don't know if the film was shot in B&W or color.)  Also, it's only in French, but with English subtitles.

Now, about Grayson.  She has about 4 major scenes in the film, each one with her in costumes and makeup more wild and bizarre than each previous scene.  Grayson's character, Miss Maxwell, is a fashion critic modeled after Diana Vreeland.  Of course, Grayson speaks her lines in French, and quite well--and it is definitely Grayson's voice.  Of her DS characters, Miss Maxwell reminds me most of Magda in the larger-than-life way that Magda was portrayed.

As for the story, I couldn't tell you what the heck is going on, except it has something to do with a star model named Polly Maggoo who is interviewed by an American TV show called "WHO ARE YOU?"  I paid little attention to the subtitles and film except when Grayson was on screen.

Anyway, Grayson's fans might be interested in checking this out, since it is now available.

One final comment:

Current Talk '04 II / CD collection of entire DS music library
« on: December 02, 2004, 04:51:42 AM »
First off, I am THRILLED  [santa_grin] that the entire DS music library [82e4] is going to be released next year in a multi-CD collection.  But there are about 300 cues already available on the 4 CDs currently in release.  Does anyone know how many music cues Cobert composed for the show?  And how many CDs will be in the collection?  Brian

Calendar Events / Announcements '04 II / Donna McKechnie/Chorus Line
« on: October 20, 2004, 04:01:51 AM »
Just finished watching the 5th hour of the PBS mini about Broadway, and there's a nice brief interview with Donna McKechnie in the show, as well as clips of her and the OBC of CHORUS LINE.   Now I know it hasn't aired yet, so this is why I'm giving notice.  Watch it Thursday night on PBS (or do as I did and buy the DVD set, which also supports PBS).
