all the fuss the silver filigreed fountain pen caused a few weeks ago made me think.
d.s. fans understand a certain "language".i wasn't thinking so much about specific names(collins)or types of creatures(vampires)but more in terms of commonplace things and ideas that resonate with fans but wouldn't have any special signifigance to anyone else.
i was thinking about fountain pens and foundling homes and afghans.about telephones and teleprompters and bleeder valves.about sedatives and seances and sleeveless dresses.about music boxes and medallions and mausoleums.about kinescope and canneries and caretaker's cottages.

Many of the bloopers have slipped into the fandom lexicon also: incestors, 100 miles, "that night must go nothing wrong", etc.
On two other boards where I post we have a "throw something off Widows' Hill" feature where we symbolically cast off things (or people) that annoy us. If I told any non-DS fan, "This is going over Widows' Hill" I don't think they would get it.

One of my personal favorites is Julia's overuse of the name Barnabas during conversations with that character. "Barnabas, surely you don't think, Barnabas, that there is a ghost, Barnabas, at Collinwood, Barnabas?"
I swear that once she used his name like, seven times in one sentence!

Maybe we should just have a list of Julia-isms. I swear, she's probably the character with the most personality traits: her flickering, heavily-lashed eyes, the ever-present cigarette and smoker's cough, her catchy little phrases, her patent scream, her vast array of sedatives, her trusty black medical bag, her emphatic way of speaking, etc.

Speaking of "talking" - interesting how thin the walls are sometimes (people have no problem hearing someone speaking in another room, or from outside) and how at other times the house is soundproof.

I've so enjoyed reading through all of these - the only one I can think of that hasn't been mentioned is how characters were always threatening to "destroy" each other. Mr. CassandraBlair and I giggle in jest about "destroying" each other all the time now!

I'm always dismayed when someone says they FF through any part of DS, particularly if it's because they don't like a certain actor/character because that discounts the work of the other actor(s) who may be sharing the scene. As irritating as one might find any actor/character, there's always something in every scene that's well worth being seen, and the thought that someone might sacrifice that aspect of a scene just to avoid some other part of it is depressing. :'(
(Not to mention FF probably risks incurring the wrath of the DS gods. [firedevil] [Ghost00] [Witch_Potion_Animated] Has anyone who FF noticed that something has gone wrong in their lives? Well, Karma's a bitch. See what you've brought onto yourself! [b003])

The only time I FF through a DS ep is when I'm looking for a specific scene in an ep to answer a question on the forum or for myself. Whenever I sit down to watch DS purely for enjoyment I can honestly say that I never ever FF through scenes - not an Adam scene at his most boorish, not an RD scene at his hair-wrangling worst, and not even a Jeb scene at his most cheap and insufferably pigheaded (which, on my aggravation scale, is like watching an RD scene times at least three :o). I never sacrifice a second.

Ditto, MB. I have never fast-forwarded through DS unless I'm researching something specific, not even the credits! To do so is disrespectful to every single person who worked on the show, IMO, right down to the gaffer (did they have gaffers?). Actually, I can honestly say I never FF'd any show or movie, even if I've seen it a million times before. If I get bored or interrupted, I'll stop what I'm watching, but never FF. I hate it when people shut movies off before the credits are done. Now that's not to say that I'm paying attention to every scene that's on, but I'd never actually FF to get to something "better." I even watch the commercials on the MPI videos every time.

Me neither. Never. The whole show is well worth watching IMO. Why anyone (especially fans) would fast forward any part of it, I shall never understand. And for the record, Adam and Jeb are awesome characters ((Penny ducks flying debris)). And Roger Davis was cool as Charles Delaware Tate ((Penny ducks grenades)).

I have never FF'd through an episode either. even during the credits I am watching to see the the lights dim, or a stagehand or actor walks into shot. ;D

NO wonder you don't like me.;) Can't say I have had bad karma in my personal life as a result of FF but when I taped the series back in the 1980s when it ran on NJN, I frequently FF if a scene or actor was boring me. However, please understand, I have great respect for the DS gods of this board. ( [9050]

If I get bored, I fast forward. Usually, I'll find the scenes I skipped to be more interesting the next time around. Sometimes a storyline interests me more than another... I loved the Cyrus/Yaeger thing recently, and wasn't that interested earlier. Sometimes I like watching Barnabas & Josette, and other times I prefer Millicent & Nathan.

"OhmygodwhathaveIdone" (said as one word with little emotion, ala Chris Jennings after fighting Jeb Hawks)
"Tell them you saw no one" (slowly) "So what should I say if I see someone?" "Tell them that you saw NO ONE!" (quickly and indignantly)
"Leave her pure, blameless" (followed by a sputtering sound as if you were blowing the fly away)
"Worthington Hall" (can be worked into many contexts)
"Mr. Barnabas...you gonna finish those fries" (done in Ben Stokes voice, okay its not an actual series line, but when you say it like Stokes, it sounds right)
I'm sure I'll think of a few more, there have been some good ones already

I'm the Antichrist, because I skip entire storylines. After getting the tapes and watching twice or so, the Leviathans, parallel time in particular became things to have on in the background when at the computer. I suspect Dan Curtis came up with the ones I don't like so much. I have to say that parallel 1970 improves after they get "Jeckyl and Hyde" and Hitchcock's "Rebecca" out of their systems. I've seen those movies.

Tonight I did a bit more on a Dr Who/West Wing thing. I love the sarcastic banter of (Sorkin) WW and it's very similar to me to Gilmore Girls... never considered that as a crossover until that very second, but well hey, it's available to be done too ain't it.
Believe it or don't, but I imagined President Bartlet rising up out of a coffin next to Barney Baby. Bats and whatnot inhabit my brain.

Rewatching Ep #337 for today I was reminded of one of my favorite expressions used on DS: seemingly doing everything you can for everyone only to be "rewarded with one slap in the face after another" for it. I love that scene between Barnabas and Dr. Woodard - and even though the expression isn't unique to DS, I always associate it with Barnabas whenever I hear it. :D

Regarding her "emphatic" way of speaking, I was watching my DVD's at lunch today and was thinking of the time when she was trying to convince Barnabas she could cure him and kept saying, "I KNOW, I *will* SUCCEED!!" It was almost as if she was trying to convince herself as well as him, LOL! [hall_rolleyes]

LOL about saying "what?" If I recall correctly it was Barnabas who said that, and to Julia, was it? Anyway, it makes me wish that they COULD have had multiple takes, so that we'd have a blooper reel like other shows have. Then maybe we would have seen/heard Grayson laughing at Jonathan and saying, jokingly, "Jon, are you drunk?!" [hall2_grin]

Every character on DS chronically said "must" instead of "have to", which Americans don't do. Especially Julia, who would tell someone he/she has to do this or that... the other person asks why, then Julia replies, "Because you must!!!" Well, Julia, as long as there's a good reason... all you had to do was explain...

so true about the door never being locked at collinwood...but what with people showing up twenty-four hours a day why bother?
considering the contents of the old house basement the door is rather carelessly left unlocked much of the time.
there was however one time that i can recall at least the mention of a holiday.when laura collins first returns in november or december of 1966 and makes idle small talk with maggie evans at the diner maggie asks her if she's in town for "the holidays". [_snowman_]
it's ironic that they went to the trouble of setting the show in a place like maine(that has very distinct seasons)and then doing absolutely nothing to try and replicate that.it's coats and blazing fires in summer and lush greenery all winter long!

The only other holiday reference I also recall was at the beginning of the Leviathan storyline, when Carolyn is wrapping up a little gift she had just purchased at the antique shop. It was Julia, I believe, who jokingly asked Carolyn if she was doing some early Christmas shopping.

You'd think at least Halloween would be mentioned even once but nooooo. [hall2_wink] The near non-existence of holidays is one of those odd things that makes Collinsport seem more seperate from the real world - "A dark Brigadoon" as Jonathan Frid called the show.

As a sort of tribute to Grayson as well as Hogan's Heroes, who's characters often were also great glove fiddlers, as a cast member of a student film at my college, many years ago, I had my character wearing a pair of gloves slapping a THIRD glove from hand to hand.

However, we never saw the characters actually celebrating Halloween themselves (no trick-or-treating for David and Amy, etc.)

I'm still on my first go-round with DS (I started with DVD Collection 1 and I'm on Collection 14 now).
Don't know if that's relevent, but anyway, I never FF - not even the credits - savor every moment.
I don't find Roger Davis too insufferable, although his hair is pretty distracting.
There's one actor that annoys me more than any other and I can't remember his name - I think he played Mrs Johnson's son at one point - redheaded guy, shows up in small roles every now and then. Who the hell was this guy and how did he land ANY role on DS, much less return engagements ?! Absolutely excruciating!
But, I suffer through it...

You'll be glad to hear that you've already seen the last of Craig Slocum - his final appearance was Ep #659 (in the middle of the Quentin's haunting storyline).
The way Slocum came to be on DS was that Dan Curtis' wife saw Slocum in a play and convinced DC to hire him on DS.
