Title: Count Petofi and The Future
Post by: Cassandra on March 23, 2003, 08:39:35 AM
There are two things that Im wondering about with this whole Petofi thing going to the future that Im trying to make sense of so maybe some of the others here have a better explanation for this.

First - Okay, now that Count Petofi has switched bodies with Quentin, he is no longer in danger from the gyspies right?  Well why does he have to go to the future then? Since they're no longer a threat to him does he really need to go? Yet he's willing to sacrafice any poor soul that comes along just to find the right hexagram.  What's the big rush? [idontknow]

And 2nd - When the real Quentin (in Petofi's body) was in the rectory room with Julia he had heard the same voices from the future as Julia did. This is what made Julia finally believe that he's really Quentin.  Now this has got me wondering if perhaps Count Petofi can't really go to the future because his real soul or spirit isn't really there in 1969.  After seeing this scene in the rectory I would think that it's really the person's spirit or "essence" that has to be available in the future and not just the body.

Very interesting, Cassandra.  Maybe Petofi hasn't thought this through(or maybe the writers).

Hi Cassandra,
That is thought provoking. Here's what I came
up with. I think that Quentin can hear the voices
from future because as you said he does have
a body in the future, even though at the
moment Petofi has possession of it. It's his,
Quentin's. There is connection between his
soul and his body that Petofi can not destroy.
Maybe if the possession goes on for too
long that would break it? But at that moment
there is still a connection.
Julia is in the past by using concentration.
She has to focus on the I-ching wands. She put herself in a trance staring at them. So perhaps
in the instance her focus is slipping she starts
to hear the voices of her natural time calling
her back and being near her he hears the
voices of his future too.

And your first question, why does Petofi want
to go to the future when he is safe from the
gypsies hiding in Quentin's body. I would say
there are a couple of reasons. First to make
sure he is safe in case the gypies discover
the switch he pulled. Most likely he would be
safe with the distance of the future hiding him.
Second, because he would see going to the
future as a great adventure. A new world.
A new life. What would he care who or how
many had to suffer or die so he could? All
he cares about is himself.
What do you think?

But, since Barn prevented Quentin's death in 1897, why would Quentin (in body OR spirit) be also in 1969? Why wouldn't he just 'stay put'?

The spirit of Quentin would no longer be haunting Collinwood, but Petofi had Tate draw the "magical" portrait, which keeps Quentin immortal, so presumably he will still be alive in 1969.  Petofi at one point implies that he planned that, but it was before he knew anything about the future, so surely that wasn't his original intention.

I think I see what you mean Julianka.  In other words it's still not a total possession yet and that the mind and body are still somehow intertwined.  (this is confusing)

This makes alot of sense.  Deep down inside I think Petofi realizes that the gyspies aren't as stupid as he would lilke to believe they are and sooner or later, they'll get him!
Or maybe they just have a way of "knowing" somehow that the imposter Petofi just isn't what he's suppose to be. They just might be able to "sense" it somehow.

You're right about that.  Petofi couldn't care less what happens to anyone else except himself.  Now that he's got this whole future thing into his head and he's determine to go there no matter what.

LOL!!!  That's probably what  he really has in mind!   I could see him showing up in the middle of Woodstock![peace]

Maybe the sight of Maggie in her miniskirt was enough to do it  ;D

You don't buy into the "Petofi is gay" theory, then?   ::)

Rolling eyes not meant to be sarcastic ... the little guy does have a ho-hum sort of smile, doesn't he?   :)

However, since I brought it up, there seem to have been a number of scenes in the past couple of weeks that would tend to discount the theory ... Petofi's encounters with lovely women show his more than Platonic interest in them; Petofi in Quentin's body barely able to restrain himself with Angelique, who one suspects would ordinarily be out of his amorous reach ...

I still think Aristede is, though.   ;D

I buy Gothick's theory that Petofi is sexually omnivorous  8)
