this bit fascinates me for some reason, and cracks me up

Episode 342

Vicki:     Julia, Dr. Woodard died last night.

Julia:     Dave?

Burke:   I'm sorry. I know that you were old and close friends.

Julia:     Dave...is dead?

Vicki:     I'm terribly sorry.

Julia:     How? Tell me how he died.

Burke:   Well, we don't know but it looks like...

Julia:     Looks like what? Tell me, I've got to know.

Burke:   Well, he...he could have had a heart attack.

Julia:     Heart attack, yes, a heart attack. He was too active, much too active. I told him so...I told him.

Burke:   Dave was one of the healthiest men I ever knew!

Julia:     Yes, very healthy. How...how could he die? How?!

Funny that you mention it. The disc I'm currently watching contains this episode and I also was taken with this scene. Classic Grayson grimacing to boot.

I always get the feeling she is intentionally trying to trip herself up because of her complicity in Dave's death ... but it's a great speech :)

Forgive the bumping of an old thread, I'm just in the middle of collecting quotes & wanted to share a few. (And perhaps gain a few more if anyone else decides to post.)

Willie: "Oh, they're so pretty, jewels are. Sometimes you can tell how pretty they are just by touching them. You don't even have to see them. You know just by touching them..how beautiful they are."

Roger: "Alright Kitten, let me get out my score pad and we'll go over the guests who are still ensconsed here."
Carolyn: "Well, Jason is still here."
Roger: "Check."
Carolyn: "But Willie Loomis has gone."
Roger: "Oh bravo! You can't keep the jet set down can you? Tell me, did he accept an invitation from the Prince and Princess of Monaco or could he simply not stand another one of Mrs. Johnson's famous boiled dinners?"

Barnabas: "..And there's no reason for you to walk around with that gun in your hand!"
Willie: "I don't like being in this house by myself."

Willie: "He isn't the only one she's interested in you know, she likes me too!"
Barnabas: "Where did you ever get that insane idea?"
Willie: "Don't you call it insane, Barnabas. She likes me. She's even been to the house to see me, more than once, so how do you like that?"
Barnabas: "What are you talking about?"
Willie: "Eh, You didn't know Maggie & I were so friendly did ya?"
Barnabas: "Willie, we'll deal with your mental abrasions later."

Willie: "I could work myself up into a real good job and then certain people could have respect for me!"

Barnabas: "Why are you laughing at?"
Willie: "Oh Barnabas, you're talking about all the people except the one that conserns you the most.
I mean, the experiment, Vicky, Adam, who you don't mention much is Julia! And she's the one you need the most."
Barnabas: "Obviously. I can't..put together the parts of a body into a human with life."
Willie: "Barnabas, you just don't get what I'm sayin'."
Barnabas: "Are you being profound?"
Willie: "No, but you're acting like a man who's secrectary is missing. And I know that's how you don't feel.
I mean, Barnabas, you're more than just worried about Julia."
Barnabas: "For a specific reason."
Willie: "Well that's all I'm sayin'!"

Willie: "Maggie, you gotta watch out for Barnabas. Now I mean, take care of him, you & Julia.
'Cause I don't wanna feel bad about leaving him, he's all alone now.
I never knew how awful it was to be alone, til I wasn't."

Will Loomis: "Ah, but you see, I must you warn you, we're a family that enjoys privacy. You see I'm writing a new book."
Carolyn Loomis: "Ha-ha-haaa!!!"
Will Loomis: "Well I AM. This week, definately. So you see, I'm gonna be pretty busy." (drinks)

Judith Collins: "Turn off that gramophone, it's driving me mad."
Quentin Collins: "Perhaps that's why I play it."

Pansy Faye: "If you turned down the lights, You'd make feel alot better & I'd look alot better! Ha-HA-HA-HA!!! That's a joke!"

Carl Collins: "My Pansy, she's a wonderful girl. She's beautiful & refined, cultured. She's English!"

Barnabas: "Oh doctor, please be careful."
Doctor Woodard: "Oh, what do you mean?"
Barnabas: "Well from what I've heard, a very dangerous man is interested in what you're trying to do."
Doctor Woodard: "So it would seem."
Barnabas: "I was told that the man, who broke into your office, is of tremendous strenght."
Doctor Woodard: "If 'man' is the proper term, one should use, to describe him."
Barnabas: "Oh, and what term would you suggest?"
Doctor Woodard: "I don't know. Beast, maybe. Although a beast would never do the things that are being done. You know, it's the particular malignance of the human spirit that's required to provide the potental for such corruption."
Barnabas: "Yes, I know what you mean. Whoever he is, he most certainly be, at one & the same time, more than a man & less than a man."
Doctor Woodard: "You seem almost sorry for him."
Barnabas: "Sorry? No, I'm not sorry. The truth is I loathe him. I loathe him very, very deeply."

Willie: "Barnabas, please! Let me go away. Far away, please!"
Barnabas: "But I need you here. You know that."
Willie: "They're gonna find me!"
Barnabas: "Find you? Are you lost?"

Willie: "I don't understand. If you're so worried I'll betray you, why'd you let them take my blood? Why?"
Barnabas: "Oh Willie, you have so little faith in me, don't you?"
Willie: "Faith?"
Barnabas: "Did you really think I would betray you?"
Willie: "what?"
Barnabas: "Did you think that I'd be more unloyal to you than you are to me?"
Willie: "I AM loyal."
Barnabas: "And you think that I am not."
"Willie: I only know that you let them take my blood."
Barnabas: "Yes, I let them take the blood." (takes out the slide & looks at it)
Willie: "What's that?"
Barnabas: "A deliate flower painted on glass."
Willie: "You switched the slides! You changed them!"
Barnabas: "You forgot that I paid a visit, a few days ago, to a doctor's office. Any number of indubious blood slides were made available to me at that time."
Willie: "And the doctor, he won't find anything?"
Barnabas: "Heh, let's say he won't find 'anything' very important."
Willie: "And they won't come after me!"
Barnabas: "Did you think I would let them come after you?"
Willie: "Oh-no. No, I knew you wouldn't let anything happen to me!"
Barnabas: "You knew nothing of the kind."
Willie: "Yes-yes I did, I knew you'd protect me."
Barnabas: "No you didn't. You didn't know it then & you don't know it now."
Willie: "What?"
Barnabas: "I protected you then. I may again and then again, I may not."
Willie: "Uhh..You will. I know you will!"
Barnabas: "We shall see. We shall see.."

Maggie: "What did you say?""
Barnabas: "I was calling Maggie.""
Maggie: "That sounds like a servant's name. But I don't remember one named Maggie.""
Barnabas: "Forgive me. I forgot. She was here for awhile but now she is gone..forever.""
Maggie: "Who was she?""
Barnabas: "No one of any importance. Her name will never be mentioned again."
(Burn!)

Willie: "Give in."
Maggie: "Give in?"
Willie: "It'd be easier."

Barnabas: "What are you doing with this tool? Be careful, it's very sharp. I wouldn't want you to hurt yourself, or anyone else. I wouldn't want you to hurt anyone. But perhaps you were trying to hurt one. Perhaps you were trying to hurt me."
Maggie: "No!"
Barnabas: "Perhaps you were trying to destroy me!"

Vicky: "Oh, isn't that pretty. What is it?"
Barnabas: "Why, it's a music box. It's been in the family for generations."
Vicky: "Beautiful! Does it still play?"
Barnabas: "Yes, would you like to hear it?"
Vicky: "Oh, yes, please."
(music plays)
Vicky: "It's lovely. I reminds me.."
Barnabas: "Of what?"
Vicky: "..of the past. Of a long, long time ago."
Barnabas: "Yes, it does."
Vicky: "Ha, I'm being much too much of a romantic."
Barnabas: "Oh, not at all. Not many young girls feel very happy about the past. And the past is very beautiful VERY beautiful."
Vicky: "Yes, I'm sure it was."
Barnabas: "Well, I watched your face just now. While you listening to the music. You seemed very transfixed."
Vicky: "I did?"

Carl Collins: "Always did have the looks in the family. Yes, I suppose that's why he was Grandmother's favorite when we were children."
Judith Collins: "And Grandfather's too. Grandfather used to sit him on his lap & say 'This boy is much too good looking to die from old age.' "
Carl Collins: "Oh..'Killed by a woman.' That's what he used to say, 'No doubt about it, Quentin will be killed by a woman.' And Grandmother used to say: 'Oh Grandfather, stop talking such nonsense!' "
Judith Collins: "Stop talking nonsense!"
Carl Collins: "Well, I was only saying what Grandfather said!"

Carl Collins: "Quentin, where is Judith & Edward?"
Quentin Collins: "Judith is dreaming about her money. And so is Edward."

Gregory Trask: "Your sister has told me, in confidential alcourse, that you are unusually high-strung."
Carl Collins: "WELL, I AM NOT! Honest!"

Magda: "Eve..Vicky..Who are these people?"   [scrdy]

Beth: "Quentin, perhaps when all of this is over, we can take a trip somewhere."
Quentin Collins: "The only trip we're gonna take is to Hell."
Beth: "Stop speaking like that, Quentin."
Quentin Collins: "Know of any other way?"
Beth: "And stop drinking please! It's not good for you."
Quentin Collins: "Oh, we got to keep condemned man healthy for the execution, don't we?"

(looking at a book from 80 years in the future)
Aristede: "Look at the clothes the people are wearing!"
Jamison Collins/Count Petofi: "You WOULD notice that wouldn't you, Aristede?"

Count Petofi: "Quentin! I'm sure YOU'LL have a drink!"

Count Petofi: "Open the coffin."

A line that I've always found terribly ironic was when Judith is sitting down with Kitty and Edward for the announcement of their engagement:

Judith: You must tell me all about your plans.
Kitty and Edward: *glance at each other and laugh* 

But the joke was on Judith, because unbeknownst to one another, both Kitty and Edward were dead broke, and the only plan they'd be making is to live off dear sister Judith in Collinwood.

I just watched this two days ago. She was highlarious. Grayson looks striking and I think the short hair made her look somewhat older.  Yes she was mugging for days....I was rolling.  I also laughed my head off when she was by the water fountain and the hands were reaching out to her.  She went "OOOOH" and then screamed like death....I rewound it about ten times.

Quentin has many awesome quotations in 1897 but one of my favorites is when he first meets Barnabas:

"I'd suggest you start talking. Five minutes go by rather quickly when a man is about to die"

Also Petofi has tons of awesome lines. One of my favorites is when Aristede is begging for mercy as G. Blackwood pursues  him and Petofi says:

"You're wasting the few precious moments you have left"

Also G. Blackwood had some notable quotations. My favorite is

"I have one and only one warning for you-- STAND ASIDE"

to Evan Hanley.

I continue to suspect that Violet Welles (sp?) was responsible for the great dialogue in 1897 even though her name isn't on many of the episodes I'm thinking of.  I heard here that she often wasn't given credit.  She also seems to be the big new factor on DS at that time.

Into the Leviathans storyline:

Angelique: "Carolyn knew me as Cassandra."
Barnabas: "She won't recognize you, you had dark hair!"

Jeb Hawkes: "I've just stopped by to confirm our date & ask you to meet me at the Old House."
Carolyn: "At the Old House?"
Quentin Collins: "Ooooh, very romantic."

Bruno: "Don't worry, you've got Bruno!"

Willie: "Oh, I'm not going up to some old room in the East Wing, open some coffin & put a stake on her heart. Barnabas, I don't even know Megan Todd!"
Barnabas: "Willie, it isn't a pleasant task for anyone. But it must be done."
Willie: "Well..Julia!"
Barnabas: "Julia hasn't got the strength for it."
Willie: "Well, I'm not so strong either, Barnabas!"

The lines that I  am about to type out strike me as HIGHlarious!  It has to do with Grayson's delivery of them more than anything, I think! 

In Episode 408...after the doctor has seen Barnabas and says he thinks he has the plague.  Natalie says "THE PLAGUE!" and although it's very serious episode (like most) I probably rewound that one ten times because of her delivery! SO FUNNY...

In Episode 409 as La Countess and Josette are looking through the Collins Family history, the wind blows out the candles (well most of them) and Grayson does that high pitched "OOH"  and then says "THE WIND!!!"  I almost fell in the floor.

My favorite of them all is in episode 410 when she tells Josette they need to leave Collinsport she says..."Josette.  I don't understand it.  What I don't I understand I run from.....IS THAT NORMAL??"   Again it's in the way Grayson delivers the line that had me cackling!  I also found it funny La Countess (who seems to "all knowing") asking her young niece if her behavior was normal.

It may just be me, maybe I was just in a mood but those lines cracked me up.  I am pretty sure, as I said before, it was in Grayson's delivery of the lines!

Another funny line that Ben said to Peter Bradford. "You don't need to be in a graveyard if you are hearing voices!"  Well I just lost it.  Ben may have been ignorant (in some ways) but he often spoke the truth.  I don't think I would be in a graveyard if I was hearing voices either!!  [ghost_wink]

One I've been meaning to post is a rare favorite line spoken by TLATKLS.  It's from early on in the Parallel Time 1970 and Maggie is talking to Hoffman, Housekeeper from Hell:

"You're a rare woman yourself, Hoffman.  You're the only person I know who could turn an apology into a testimonial."

Classic stuff...

In general, ALL of Grayson's scenes as Housekeeper Hoffman are instant favorites.  I love her gloating whenever she talks to Maggie about "Mrs Collins."

I think my favorite is early on in the show, Willie has just let Barnabas out of his coffin and gets bit.. on the wrist... hahahaha.... and Willie is staying in a room in Collinwood. Vicki brings his food up to him and he's not acting right... so she's SUPPOSED to say, "What's wrong with you? Your illness?" And it comes out, "What's wrong with you, Your Illness?" almost like saying "Your Highness".

Thanks, MB, for that capture.  I'd forgetten that that scene is staged in front of the portrait of "the first Mrs. Collins."

Another great moment is when Maggie is pouring a cup of tea for Will Loomis and the smirk on Hoffman's face as she hands him his liquor right on beat to be caught by Maggie.  Will's line about tannic acid, and Hoffman's smug expression, are priceless!

I enjoy both of those, especially Barnabas's line, which really ought to have been preceded by the words "I have a cunning plan!"
