I just wanted to give us with an update. We are in the the 42nd place and we are close to being in the top 40. This vote page had been posted on different blogs talking about fandom. This could be a way to get ourselves noticed. I would really love to move up.

It will be nice to have Dark Shadows on the Top 40's list. More people will see that the series is still alive and well, plus interest will be stirred in the minds of previous "teens" who ran home to watch the show. I've already heard of people being interested in renting the DVDs to see it again. More previous fans may come out of the wood work and add to the fandom. Well, one can dream. ;D

i have tried to vote many,many times and when i go to cast the vote i get an announcement that says "sorry,you have already voted.please try again in sixty minutes" or something to that effect.this happened the very first time i tried to vote and many times when it was the first time i voted that day.

Thank you very much for the effort. The trick is to make sure that you only push the button once. A double click will give you the sorry. I know most things are a double click but the vote site is a single. Also you might want to refresh your browser also. If you still have problems send me a private message.

I'm not sure why you get that message when you hadn't voted yet and it was your first time. Let's see if I can make some helpful suggestions... IF you're still interested in voting for Dark Shadows [I hope you are].
When you get to the page to vote, first refresh it by clicking the "reload" button on your browser. Sometimes that refreshing your cache. If you click the button to vote and for some reason it registers 2 clicks, you'll get that message. My mouse does that to me sometimes and I just want to scream and bound on the keyboard, it's so frustrating. Don't know if that happens to you but it might be why you get that message. If you vote and try to vote again but it was less than 60 minutes since your last vote, you will also get that message.

Some more tips... If you get a "File Not Found" message after you click to vote, your vote and your IP address did not go through so you should immediately refresh our page by right-clicking anywhere on the screen and choosing"Refresh" and vote again.
If you get what looks like the Thank You page but it "doesn't come in all the way" (like you see the light blue page background but no text or pictures), then YOUR VOTE WAS COUNTED but the page probably stalled because someone else is voting at the same time. (That can happen during peak Internet "traffic" hours, particularly between 7 PM and 11 PM at night.) If you try to vote again in this case, you will get the Sorry page (this is also a good way to check and see if your first vote went through - there is no penalty to the voter for getting a Sorry page.)
Lastly, I use high speed COMCAST myself and I don't have this but I have noticed in their new ads that they have some sort of "web accellerator" for high speed (they call it Power Boost or something like that) which could be saving pages you visit often on their server to make them seem to come up faster. If you know that you do have this, then you might need to refresh your browser every time you come into our site because you can't vote from such "stored" pages (hit the refresh button on your browser OR the press the F5 key on your keyboard, after you come in but before you vote.)

Well, it was really quite easy to find this thread!
Now that I'm here, finally, I would like to respectfully submit an initial suggestion: It might be better to change the title of the thread to something more specific to TV Vote, preferably something which expresses the purpose of voting, rather than just "Vote for Dark Shadows on TV Vote!" The current title is rather ambiguous, and, doesn't have quite the grab that you might want, in order to attract new readers.
It might be something we could discuss, here, before coming to a precipitous decision.
I'll be back, tomorrow, with some voting stats and analysis, for review.

I am starting a new thread for the sole purpose of explaining why it would be fun to nominate Dark Shadows [for link, see banner-- Admin.]. If you ask why bother, then I ask the readers why are you here? Why bother to talk about a 41 year old TV show that you believe may not ever come back on TV?
Why? I can only tell you why I vote.
I have always loved Dark Shadows but forgot about it after 1971 when it went off the air. Around 2002, I stumbled upon my first yahoogroup dedicated to the show. Since then, I've spend time communicating with fans, making friends with them, attending my first festival in 2003, and thankfully finding this forum to have fun with the subject. It's a pastime, to have fun, make friends and explore new avenues [writing and photo shop]. Now I'm having fun nominating DS so it can be on the Top 40 list with other past and present TV shows. It's a game.
Why do people come here to play word games and caption pictures relating to Dark Shadows, or just discussing the episodes? IMO, for the camaraderie and fun. That's why I invite every DS fan to play another game, have fun and show fan power that Barnabas, Julia, Professor Stokes and company are still live. I've given the TV_Vote site the link to this forum, along with other DS groups so people who are interested in getting involved with DS have a place to come to, for their own reasons: for fun, profit or curiousity. What's the reasons why you all are still here, every day, every week, talking about Dark Shadows? I've heard from some of you, all good reasons. Let's play another DS game. [hall2_cheesy]

One can click on either [I believe once every 24 hours] to rate the other members. I see it as a game and usually only curse people. Curses aren't a positive thing but here, they are!!

Well, since this is being brought up, I will respond again too. [hall2_grin]
The games that involve the captions, for example, provide amusement and fun for those who read and/or participate. There is a pay-off. When anyone initiates a discussion on a DS subject, there is a payoff in reading response, debating or agreeing with other cousins, and getting information and insight that maybe wasn't there before.
Going to vote on a poll with no end in sight, being asked to vote numerous times a day, has no payback. There's no great feeling (as far as I can see) about the placement of DS on this poll because you know the placement is based on voters who are willing to vote a dozen times a day, day and night, and not any real popularity.
I feel that discussing DS here and the available merchandise to be as worthy a cause as voting a zillion times a day for a poll that how many people will ever see?
I do wonder why such energy and devotion has not been channelled into an organized campaign of writing letters to various potential networks that could air DS. That works better and petitions and it certainly works better than polls that have little criteria.

Ah, well, first of all, Nancy, nice to meet you!
I can see your point, coming from the position that you do. If you will kindly indulge me with just a little open-mindedness, I'd like to try to explain the point to all the voting, from the position that we voters are in.
TV Vote may, on the face of it, seem like just a silly game. However, it is actually a venue for making members of other fan-bases aware of one's own show. I began voting on TV Vote as a Browncoat, a fan of Firefly, a sci-fi series. We Browncoats are, as a group, about as rabid as they come; we got our show to the #1 position in the Top 40 poll this past August, after about a year of concentrated effort. I became aware of the separate Nominations poll, and, began voting for another show of which my wife is fond. However, that show had no real support, which became frustrating. I looked at the other Nominations candidates, and, Lo! and behold, there was Dark Shadows!
I hadn't thought about DS in MANY years; I had been a childhood viewer of the original broadcasts, since DS was on in the daytime, and, I could watch those monsters... My point is, Nancy, that TV Vote rekindled my awareness and fondness for DS. More importantly, when I brought DS in the Nominations to the attention of the other Browncoats, a lot of them either also experienced that same, nostalgic rekindling, or, an altogether new interest in the show.
Now that DS is advancing toward breaking into the Top 40, it is garnering that same kind of attention from members of the 40 other fandoms, not to mention the hundreds more below us in the Nominations. Interest and curiosity is what drives new fans. Everyone who participates in TV Vote is already a passionate fan of at least one show, the majority of which are in the broad genre of the fantastical, like DS. More fans means more support for projects like the new DS movie, which, in turn, will drive more demand for re-broadcast of the original series on TV, amongst other things.
As for there being no "great feeling" about the placement of our show, you have to try to understand that, as a very small group of fans of a 41-year-old program, we cast more daily votes than the fandoms of 26 of the Top 40 shows, many of which are still on the air! Every time we surpass another show on our rise to the Top 40, every day close we get to our goal, is a colossal thrill to us! When DS enters the Top 40, we will have earned the respect and envy of every fandom there.
So, that is why we vote. That is our payoff. As for using our energies better, I don't know how many millions of letter have been written over the years to get DS re-aired, but, we are accomplishing just what I have just described, and, more than that, we are having fun doing it.
Thank you for your patience with me while I did my best to clarify that.

I assure you I am quite open-minded. I respect however a DS fan wishes to celebrate or promote the show. My open-mindedness also comes into play in that I don't post on other DS message boards and lists every day, several times a day,asking them to come visit this message board (which is a favorite of mine) or participate in or join any of the DS lists I'm on. Sure, I let other fans now and then about the existence of this board and some cool DS lists I am on but that's the extent of it. I let them know what's there for them to choose whether or not they are interested. I respect their wishes if they don't join or participate. I don't ask them to explain their choice because that is not being respective or open-minded in my opinion [hall2_wink]

Well, I am not unaware of some of the friction that the whole issue of the TV Vote campaign has created on some discussion groups. That is why I tend to limit myself to a single post, if any, on those groups, leaving it to others with more experience than I have to judge whether or not they wish to post more frequently. A forum such as this one has the distinct advantage that, should someone wish to post a discussion about a topic which is not universally popular, they can do so, and, those who do not wish to be engaged in such a discussion can simply steer clear.
As for what I perceive you to be inferring (and, please, forgive me if I misinterpret your statements), I would be terribly shocked and disappointed if someone were to be demanding others to explain their choices not to participate in TV Vote. It is one thing to utilize a forum for civil, topical discourse; it would be quite another to brow-beat other forum/group members about a topic or activity.

Liking lori54 is a GREAT reason to vote! If I hadn't been voting, already, that'd be another one, for me. She's a dedicated fan, and, has been a lot of my inspiration in helping out with Dark Shadows on TV Vote.
Yesterday, the voting went GREAT! While many shows in the Top 40 tanked horribly (my own, beloved Firefly, especially, with the lowest score we've seen in a LONG time... =-[.]-=), Dark Shadows actually GAINED over the previous day!

I think it's fair to turn a question to you and ask why some of those involved in the voting simply will not take a "not interested" from other fans? Why subtly ask for an explanation? I would like to say a few things. One thing that Dark Shadows told me when I was growing up, it was OK to be different. You could take a different path, and it was OK. Some of us like to vote, some of us don't. Ray, Jackie and myself are only trying to get others involved. It would make our climb easier. But we don't want to make people wrong if they don't want to vote. That would not be a good thing to do.
I kept posting the stats every day or so because people were looking at it. Many times on this board people look but they don't post. Our numbers were going up. On the other subject asking about voting, and this was because I wanted to know. I asked people to talk to me privately if they felt better about that than posting their thoughts under that subject. The private messages that I have received have been positive.
I do respect everyone viewpoint, that is what our country is about. For that I am very thankful. I just hope that we can agree to disagree, and all get along. This is a great group that we all belong to. We like the fact that we can express out views and our love for our show. I know that when I was growing up it made life easier.

First of all, thank you, Nancy, for clarifying some things for me. My main question was why someone who had no interest in the TV Vote would bother reading, let alone post, here, on this particular thread; I had not realized that you had been asked, point blank, why you didn't participate.
And, I think that, in disagreement, one can certainly still be open-minded; that is why we have discussions like this. That said, we are all members of a larger fandom, and, have a great deal more in common than otherwise. Compared to that, a preference, pro or con, regarding an online poll is trivial.
At any rate, for those who are interested in the voting...
Yesterday wasn't a good day for Dark Shadows. Hercules went a up a few points over the previous day, which was to be expected. What took me by surprise, however, was that Dark Shadows had a MASSIVE drop in votes, from the previous day, especially after the atypical advance we had made on the first day of the weekend. We need to do better, in order to stay competitive. If nothing else, our demographic should be an advantage. Much of the voter drop-off this week can be attributed to the US Thanksgiving holiday break at colleges. Most of us Dark Shadows fans aren't college kids. I can't say how many of the Hercules voters are, but, we should hold an edge.

Ah, I see. You obviously missed some posts on this particular subject - one of them was Lori's post asking for our input, and what did we think (about the poll) followed by, in another thread, Jackie asking those of us who thought "why bother" she wanted to know then why are we here? Having been on his board for some years, I do take "we" and "us" to include me. Hence, I responded, as did others. And some also said they didn't see the point in the poll.
If the desire is for only positive support for the voting game, then that needs to be stated otherwise people who agree and disagree about the virtues of the poll are going to respond to the "what do you think?" and "Why are you here?" type of questions.
Jackie and Lori are two ladies that I like very much and have a great deal of respect for. We don't always agree on things. If they ask a question of the board members, as a board member I will answer.

Rich Labonte just cut off the votes around noon, yesterday, resulting in higher-than-normal numbers for the previous day, and, drastically-reduced numbers for yesterday. He also whacked the voting streaks (again) of anybody counting 'em.
One thing to note: Despite the cut-off, Hercules managed a modest rise in votes, yesterday. That tells me that they have surged, again. Let's be ready, today, folks, and, if you're not already using one, start using some sort of vote timers, to maximize your voting efficiency!
If, as I estimate, there are 60 Dark Shadows voters, at an average of 6 votes/day (reflected in our recent trends), if each of us voted ONCE more per day, we could get a daily total of around 420! I realize that many of us are already doing all we can; however, if you optimize your vote timing, you should be able to squeeze at least an extra vote out of any given voting period.

So, what happened to our votes?
It appears that Rich counted scores early both yesterday, and, today; I guess he wanted to
get it out of the way, to get on with his own day.
Remember, Hercules had an awful drop, yesterday; well, if Rich counted those scores early,
those votes had to go somewhere... Today. But, their advance, today, was a modest one.
We had a pretty good score, yesterday, despite everyone else's votes going down
(including Firefly), which tells me, we ought to have had some good numbers today, which,
obviously, we did not. I expect, now that we've seen the numbers, we may be chasing a
latent balance into tomorrow.
However, my wife and I were out, yesterday (dropping off Firefly and Serenity DVDs, and
other goodies, at local fire stations), and, missed 9 votes. We're home all day, today, so

i knew shows like 'dr.who' and 'star trek'(and d.s.)had wildly devoted "cult" fanbases but do some people really consider 'scarecrow and mrs.king' to be the "best show ever"?
there are several others that left me a bit perplexed as well.

Remember that the poll isn't a real "poll" in the sense that the numbers represent real figures (many individual votes). All that's required is a group of about 10-20 fans of one show to vote once an hour, every hour all day and night if they want to make a show get into the top 40 or make a good showing on the list. I don't think there are tons of people out there who think some of the shows listed are the best ever. I have to admit I've never heard of some of the shows listed.

It's one often heard about the TV Vote poll. Usually, though, it's leveled by sci-fi fans at the fans of the westerns that have done so well; they just don't realize that the TV watchers of the early days of television have a strong, nostalgic attachment to the shows with which they grew up, just like Dark Shadows fans do.
As for some of the other shows in the Top 40, such as Lexx, Cleopatra 2525, and others of more questionable merit, well, many of them got where they are in the poll, simply because their fans caught wind of TV Vote early. Now, in the face of other fandoms come late to TV Vote, they are gradually falling off the leader board, as did Hercules, which, about 22 months ago, was #16 (though, in truth, relative to Cleopatra 2525, for example, Hercules was a masterpiece of television art!).
In comparison, Dark Shadows, which we voters have only been organized in advancing out of the Nominations poll for a little over a year (where it had lain at 519 votes, with only one vote all the previous year), is a fandom powerhouse. Not only has the organized effort of the Dark Shadows voters achieved an enormous feat in a relatively short span of time (the poll, itself, is over 5 years old), but, once visible in the Top 40, it has enjoyed an sudden surge in votes from long-time fans who hadn't realized it was there.
One vote-leader for Battlestar Galactica (2004) was delighted to add his votes; he stated the same story we've all heard, over and over: He ran home from school to watch. Well, he wasn't the only one; Dark Shadows got a jump of over 100 votes per day, once in the Top 40. As well, now that Dark Shadows is on the radar, so to speak, it is generating a lot of interest and curiosity from fans of other, even wildly-unrelated shows, which helps to expand the fandom.
So, while it is easy to dismiss the TV Vote poll as meaningless, it has never been intended to act as a scientific poll. Rather, it is a barometer of Fan Power, the devotion of fans who are willing to vote, up to once per hour, to see their favorite show advanced among the others. Current projections show Dark Shadows, a 41 year old show, destined to reach the #6 spot, among a pack of more recent shows supported by equally devoted fandoms.
Not bad, in my opinion, and, with the added effect of drawing new interest to the show, entirely worth the effort, never mind the fact that those of us voting have had a lot of fun, along the way.

I agree, I've never heard of some of the top 40 shows, let alone many of the nominated ones. And since some of those shows aren't on my list of favorites, I don't vote for them. The vampire shows, I love such as BTVS and Angel, I do. I like Firefly, B5, Farscape, CSI and House so they get my votes too.

I'm not surprised to see Scarecrow and Mrs. King in the top 40. On www.fanfiction.net, it has 1060 items of fan fiction listed, whereas Dark Shadows has only 158. Buffy has 31,955, which I find incredible. I'd like to know how many distinct plots there are in those 31,955 items, but I'm not willing to read all of them to find out.

Fandom is a funny thing... Fanfic is an extension of that. As for the sheer volume of Buffy fics, though I've never read them, I have come across discussions online, and, they apparently derive not only from the large number of episodes aired, but, also, from a thriving crossover palette, including, among other things, Harry Potter.
Lots of material for a long time to come.
