attended the vista theatre event tonight. john karlen, jerry lacy, roger davis and chris pennock were no shows. barbara steele and karen black placed handprints in cement in front of the theatre. kathryn l. scott and lara parker were in costume but i dont think they were costumes from the show. the so called dark shadows music concert was a let down for me. the ad made it seem like we were going to see robert cobert conducting his orchestra but what we got was pre-recorded music with added live organ/piano music played to clips from the show! one of the hi-lites was david selby in full quentin costume and makeup reciting shadows of the night. im sure others will be posting reports and pictures. i got photos that i will post here or put on a website later. i videotaped most of it but was told to turn the camera off during the concert.

Well Joe, Diane and I are justifiably jealous, [hall2_smiley] as are most of us here who couldn't go. Selby in make-up as Quentin doing "Shadows of the Night"!!!!! That is the definition of "WOW". [hall2_shocked]
Glad you got to attend. [hall_grin]

Thanks, Criseyde, for that link. What a hoot!
I think that woman needs to have her eyesight checked though--if I understood her properly, she stated that Ms. Parker has had no plastic surgery and wears "little or no makeup"--um, say that again???

Um, AND she said Barbara Steele had nothing to do w/DS??!! Guess she didn't watch the travesty on NBC in 1991. ^-^
AND the women DON'T live in LA!? Hello??? LP lives in Topanga and KLS in BHills as I recall!
Selby? Self-absorbed? NOT!! ;)

So, how was the turnout? Was it well attended and did Cobert put his handprints too?

Nearly sold out. Empty seats were very rare, anyway. As for Cobert, a foot...

Karen Black also arrived in the limo. Selby did not; however, his presence wasn't a mystery if you recognized his wife, son, and publicist in front of the theater since well before the event. [hall2_wink]
Roger Davis' name was dropped from advertisements before the event, nor was it on the marquis, so he really wasn't a no show.

Where the heck was the autograph line?, the clueless moderator asked.
I don't know nothin' 'bout no "self-absorbed," but Selby poured his all into the performance, emoting the hell out of "Shadows of the Night." A friend likened the audience reaction to that of a rock star-- flashing cameras, screams and squeals, and thunderous applause at the beginning and end.
Good pic of the grammophone. I'm sure someone will be reporting about Selby's entrance, which may have been the best ever at a DS event. [hall2_tongue]

nice pics. roger davis name was in an ad placed in the local L.A. WEEKLY newspaper that came out a week before the event. ive tried posting pictures here but it keeps saying upload folder full and make my files smaller but they are under 100 kb so i dunno.

I was quite disappointed in the event. I understand the organizers cannot be held responsible for the actors not appearing, since they are subject to prior commitment, but as Joe pointed out, so much else was falsely advertised.
This morning I went back and re-read the announcement on collinwood.net and on the postcard sent by ShadowGram: the collinwood.net announcement plainly states "composer Robert Cobert will be conducting the first-ever concert of his infamous Dark Shadows soundtrack music" while the postcard is more coy, referring to a "live music performance conducted by Robert Cobert". I don't consider accompaniment by a synthesizer and keyboard to be a "live music performance," let alone a "concert," and if the pre-recorded music was conducted by Cobert, we weren't told about it. He sat in the audience during the entire show and did no apparent conducting whatsoever. The sound quality of the music was pretty bad too; it sounded screechy, and after the first, watery, broken song, the recording had to be started over (with only slight improvements). I don't know where the videos came from, if these are the "DS music videos" released by MPI or if they were newly developed for the event. Some of them were fun, like the "Back at the Blue Whale" and "I Wanna Dance with You" montages, but others were questionable (scenes of the cemetery and mausoleum set to "No. 1 at the Blue Whale"?). I knew no videotaping was allowed, but I smuggled a tape recorder into my purse and left it running throughout the musical segment (I haven't yet checked the playback quality.) However, Selby's dramatic recitation (beside a gramophone) was one of the high points of the night. He looked stunning in his Quentin sideburns, and the fact that he emerged from backstage in a cloud of mist enhanced the eerie, romantic effect. Last night was also Cobert's birthday, and Jim Pierson surprised (and embarassed him) by making Cobert stand up while we all sang "Happy Birthday" to him. In honor of Cobert's birthday, we were all given a complimentary CD of Cobert's big band, jazz, and disco compositions.
The Barnabas costume contest didn't turn out as I'd thought it would either. The winner was chosen through a less-than-precise method: the five entrants lined up and whoever received the most applause won--not the DS: The Beginning DVDs as mentioned in the original collinwood.net announcement, but a copy of "Trilogy of Terror," DS Collection 26, a DS:the First Year book, and some other vampire movie I'd never heard of (Orgy of Blood?) (The SG postcard simply says to enter to contest "for a prize," so I guess that covers this.) Wally Wingert (?) won the contest with an impressive present-day Barnabas costume and a snippet of the monologue about Josette's death.
The event was beset by traditional delays: it started late and ran later (the autographs didn't even begin until after 11:00, the stated end-time). What bothered me more though was the physical organization. It was impossible to see the handprints in cement ceremony unless you were at the very front of the line like Midnite, or unless you ran up and squeezed through the crowd. The line of people waiting to get in wrapped all the way around the building and around the block. You wouldn't even know the ceremony was going on unless someone came to the back and told you. I was at the Night of DS event in 2001, and as I recall, there were two lines on either side of the door so that all attendees could gather around and observe the ceremony.
I was also disappointed with the program itself. It consisted largely of videos rather than the actors speaking. But instead of the "rare footage" that we had been promised, they were things that are either commercially available or that we've seen time and again like the blooper tape (half an hour could have been shaved off if they hadn't played the entire thing) or the trailers for the DS movies. The Dan Curtis tribute was the same video that played at the Brooklyn Fest (which was itself an edited version of the tape that played at the MT&R salute to Curtis in 2004). For me it was repetitive, but of course I realize that this was a treat for people who didn't attend the Fest or the earlier event.
I did enjoy listening to Karen Black. She talked poignantly about her last meeting with Dan Curtis, who by then could not talk because of his brain tumor. Still, he managed to communicate by stroking her hair (extensions), squeezing her hand, and grumbling when she teased him. She also talked about "Trilogy of Terror"--the making of it and its impact on her life. Apparently, the special effects team was inexperienced (and a bit clueless) so she and Dan had to figure out for them how to pull off certain tricks (e.g. how to make blood appear on Karen's finger after the doll stabbed her, how to film the doll running wihtout it crashing into the camera or losing its limbs). She mentioned how everybody recognizes her as the Zuni doll woman and often imitates the doll. She gave three different amusing impersonations based on her own catergorizations: the "EEE EEE EEE!"s, the "AY AY AY!"s and the "YAYAYA!"s.
A charity auction was also held at which Ben Cross's Barnabas cane commanded $1,250. Other items were a bound copy of both "Night Stalker" movie scripts signed by Richard Matheson, an Adam & Eve kinescope, and an award given to Bob Cobert certifying that "Quentin's Theme" was a #1 hit.
It's always a pleasure to meet up with DS friends, and I enjoyed seeing many whom I haven't talked to since August or even since the last Festival! And as I mentioned above, there were several high points, but on the whole, I don't think the Halloween celebration was all that it was cracked up to be. I sincerely wonder about some of the changes (did MPI think the original contest prize was too expensive? Was there no room in the theater for an orchestra for Cobert?) I was looking forward to much more and feel let down. [hall2_sad]

Yes, Marcy Robin, Kathy Resch and Maria Barbosa started the DS Festivals in the early 80s. Barbosa was the chairperson and when she stepped down after 3 years, the other two suggested Pierson and he ended up taking her place. He started working for DCP after that.
And...

yes jim started working for dc in the early 90s. i have speculation of how he got to work for him. i cant prove it so i cant post it cause i know my comments will be removed. but in the late 80s many fans including myself got cease and desist letters from dcp lawyers. this was for selling tapes of the show and t-shirts with characters from the show on them and other fan created merchandise. remember there was no mpi created merchandise or video releases back then. so us fans were keeping ds alive.

I couldn't tell you if she sat at the autograph table (see reply #8 [hall2_rolleyes]) but I asked her to sign a photo of her as Dr. Hoffman and she was very gracious and friendly. I was tickled crimson.
Switching reels again, I was trying to figure out why I'm not feeling the same disappointment about the evening as ProfStokes and joe integlia. Then it hit me-- duh, it's because my expectations about the scheduled events were so low. The last ShadowGram had already downgraded the musical portion so far that I wouldn't have been surprised if they'd just played a music CD while Robert Cobert sat in the audience (and I was half right). I hadn't seen the tribute to Dan Curtis, and I'm glad I got to see his Emmy presentation and speech, but I knew at the recent Fest that I'd have numerous chances to see it. The [ShadowGram] promise of a "big-screen presentation of unusual DS material" seemed suspect to me as well, and I'm sorry, but the NoDS trailer and blooper reel do not qualify. I even debated blowing off the evening, but decided that catching up with friends, some that I hadn't seen in a year or more, made it worth being there, plus I wanted to meet Barbara Steele, and for those reasons the night didn't disappoint.

There are always newbies, Housefly Cameo, and without them the fandom will never thrive.;)

Jim Pierson went to work for Dan Curtis Productions sometime around 1988. He got a TV and/radio production type of degree in his native Texas before moving to New York City. He became the chairman of the fests in 1986 and later moved to California to work for Dan Curtis and his production company. He was or soon became the director of marketing and PR for DCP. While producing DS stuff at MPI in Chicago Jim started to also produce other videotapes and projects mostly of subjects from the 60s and 70s that had nothing to do with DS. It's not unusual for someone to work with one production company and also do other work for others on a project-by-project basis. Jim now exec produces projects on behalf of DCP and is still the go-to person regarding licensing and merchandising issues. Jim was the associate producer on the WB DS pilot. I know all this only because I've been asked several times about Jim so this is the scoop plus I've known him since 1986. [hall2_grin]

Housefly, I hope you do not think it condescending or anything if I say something of an orienting nature about Jim. As any life expereince will tell you, the guy or gal at the top will always have defenders and detractors. Always. You will have fans say Jim is "self important" but the reality is this is the guy who is in charge of the Dan Curtis universe now and the DS stuff has been in Jim's hands since he started at DCP. He was a fan of the show who went on to work for its creator. Jim did work for DCP that involved all of its ventures and not just DS just as he works for MPI producing videos that are not DS-related. He is important in the DS universe because he's the guy who can or cannot give permission for projects, licenses, etc. I know from my own experience in fandom that sometimes other fans will resent you for doing something they would like to do themselves Or don't get that what you is a business that involves the DS fandom. Sheer ignorance can lead to some uninformed opinions and nasty remarks about Jim but then some experiences like mixed communications rightfully frustrate fans. It's also good to remember that a bad business decision doesn't mean the person who made the decision is a bad person - just made a dumb or unpopular decision.
My policy is to not take the word of anybody on anyone else (friend or not) and make up my own mind based on my personal experiences.

I have to say that I wasn't expecting much from this thing either. And it was in California, which totally nexed my going from the get-go. But, I did like the flyer for it. lol
And HOW COME NOBODY has mentioned the TONS of orbs in all these posted pics? As a ghost hunter enthusiast, I am pleasantly surprised. There was especially A LOT of them in the background of one of the wide table shots that included Marcy Robin, as well as in one of the pics of the stars getting out of their limos.
Sorry I missed the David Selby thing, but maybe we can hope that it will become a regular event and they'll knock off some of those clip shows! [female_skull]

Karen Black explained inside the theater that DC allowed her to give input during work on Trilogy of Terror. Among her suggestions was that she have the jagged teeth at the ending.
Her tribute to him was very touching, particularly when she told us that when we feel a sudden gust of wind or a jolt of energy, or hear an infant kicking up a fuss, that would be Dan.

I was a little jealous of everyone who was able to go until I read all of your accounts, but it does look like everyone had fun. I have heard that there were fires up near where Chris Pennock lives. I think that might be what kept him from attending.
-
All in all, after reading most of the accounts of the Halloween party, I'm not too jealous that I didn't attend. Would love to have seen Kathryn and Lara dressed up, though----and Selby too, but saw it in the photos you' all took. Which were great. Thanks for sharing. Too bad a lot of the celebrities didn't show up, that's kind of friggen' ridiculous, with so much hype. Probably only Chris had an excuse with the fires, of course. The rest I don't know, probably just couldn't be bothered, which is sad. Well, the important ones were there anyway, Kathryn, Lara, David Selby, Karen Black, Barbara Steele, and the rest. Would love to see more of your pictures of the event. And, hope we have a festival to go to next summer in California.

i finished editing my video footage of the event. it runs apx. 30minutes. i can combine this with previous videos from vista theatre, H.O.D.S and N.O.D.S. celebrations to make a 60minute vhs or dvd. anyone interested in a copy can email me for details. JTVIDEO@WEBTV.NET
I have another idea on how to share this video with everyone. i could show it on my webcam thru yahoo messenger! u would need to install yahoo mesenger on ur computer if u dont have it already at www.yahoo.com it is free. u may or may not need a yahoo account and email address but that is free too. then u would need to add me to ur buddy list. my yahoo address is jayteevideo@yahoo.com do not add my webtv address and this will not work with webtv either. u do not have to have ur own webcam to view my webcam. then we will have to figure out a day and time when most people can view. for me weekends are best. i work from 4pm to 1230am pacific time, monday thru friday so those times wont work for me. so i will check later today to see how many of u added me to ur bud list and take it from there. it should be fun and maybe if this works out i could show other vintage convention footage that i have shot. i have footage dating from 1982!

Very amusing, thanks! The synthesist/pianist that evening and standing next to her mother (you've gotta love her mom) was Jay Asher.

I was there. Dragged a friend along, who did not enjoy herself at all I'm sorry to say. But then, she's not a fan and frankly had higher expectations than yours truly.
Was even a contestant in the lookalike contest. Not that I look anything at all like Barnabas--I'm blonde and have a beard for one thing--but I wanted to show off my costume complete with inverness cape. Methinks my costume looked quite good, but I was astonished to get any votes at all! I even voted for the guy who won!
David Selby was good, but a little hammy IMO. Just a little. I must say Lara Parker looked more relaxed and happier than the last time I saw her, about five years ago. She also looked noticeably older, although still quite lovely. While I have no reason to think she has had plastic surgery, she clearly is dying her hair. Five years ago, those beautiful locks were platinum. At the event, they were honey-gold. But oh that smile! And those eyes!

Well, here's my take on the event. I flew down from the San Francisco Bay Area for the event, and was VERY disappointed. [hall2_angry] I agree with ProfStokes that there was a LOT of false advertising and hype. The music was SUPPOSED to be what appeared in the ad to be a live event onstage with Robert Cobert conducting. Instead, it was a videofest (which I had seen before) with only one guy who played live music. [hall_huh] The theatre was too dark, and there was no stage being used. I was lucky I got to sit in the second row, or I would NOT have been able to see much of what was going on. [hall2_rolleyes]
I arrived about 10 minutes late and was standing near the end of the line - all the way around the corner - so I totally missed the ceremonies that were going on in front of the theatre. I languished there for about 20 minutes until I decided to wander up and find some friends towards the front of the line.
The highlight for me was David Selby's performance. That was awesome! [hall2_grin] Also, it was nice to meet up with some of my DS friends again. [hall_grin]
An added bummer for me was my digital camera stopped working, so I didn't get all the pictures I wanted to get. [hall_angry] I walked across the street to Von's and bought a disposable camera. However, by the time I did that and got to the end of the autograph line, David Selby had already left! He's my favorite, too! [hall2_cry] But it was nice to meet Karen Black and to see Kathryn, Lara, and Betsy again. [hall2_wink]
