Title: DS DVD Volume 26 Listed as Best Seller
Post by: David on September 22, 2006, 08:01:08 AM
Like Volume 25 before it, volume 26 is on the best seller list at DVDPlanet.com, the USA's largest online video store.

OK, networks, WAKE UP!
There's a huge Dark Shadws audience out there!!!!!

I look forward to my copy from www.deepdiscountdvd.com.  I've bought them all from DDD and I hope they can get the special collection of the pre-Barnabas episodes after MPI makes them available to members only.

Ms. Crisey, Netflix also has volume 26 listed, coming out Sept 26, which means vol 26 before 25, but at least they are finally getting them!!

DDD just reduced the prices (or I just noticed the reduction) on their DS sets to around 36 bucks per set.  I wonder if this is just for the H'ween season or if this is the new price?  It's not being billed as one of their sales, so far as I can tell.

This is great! This is almost as low as they were selling for the last day of the fest-- $30 a pop! What a deal! And free shipping too! Let me just head over to the family mausoleum and open up that coffin with all the jewels and cash in baby!!!

I've been collecting the DS DVDs from DDD since they've been selling them.  At times, I've notices some collection boxes cheaper then others.  Regular price is usually $43 but a few are down to $35.  Occasionally DDD will put all currently stocked DVDs on sale and I've gotten some very good prices.  I'm going to wait until MPI makes the pre-Barnabas DVDs available to the public before collecting these too.

I've been thinking about joining the MPI DS DVD club for a while, though now I suppose it's pretty much useless. I've got up to....I think set 19, and their policy is buy five, get the sixth free. So I'd get the 25th set free, and then possibly one free from the Beginning Series DVDs. Do the benefits really outweigh the costs? I don't think they do, but if anyone else has an opinion please let me know. I didn't think the benefits outweighed the costs before I had nearly the complete series, because they want close to $60 for each DVD set! Yikes! Why would I do that when I can save $20 by going elsewhere? The only thing that really would interest me is the things that only members can get--like the coffin for keeping the bobbleheads in and whatever else.

They don't Brandon, wait until you can get them from someone OTHER than MPI!  Don't let them bully you into joining their club.  Amazon, Best Buy, DDD and other outlets will have the pre-B eps eventually.   ;)

Let's do the math.  At MPI, you get 5 boxes for $60 each and the 6th free.  At $60 a crack, that's $300 for 5 boxes in which you get the 6th one for free.

Using DDD as an example, all the regular priced DS boxes did cost $43.22 each. [I just looked on their website and saw ALL their previously DS Collection boxes now down to $36.73 each which is lower than I've seen in a LONG while.] The only one left that costs $43.22 is the last box, Set 26.  So at $43.22 each, 6 boxes would cost $259.32 if DDD sold "The Beginning" boxes at the same rate.  If sold at $36.73 each, 6 boxes is $220.38.  That's $40.68 - $79.62 difference...

Yes, MPI has other offers available but if one isn't interested in those other offers, one would save money looking elsewhere.  I believe the pre-Barnabas boxes will be available to the public eventually.  So I'm waiting.

Couldn't agree more dsbf.

My late cat Megan use to sit staring at a small mouse hole in the garage patiently and calmly waiting, waiting - sometimes for hours at a time.  She got what she was waiting for about 99.9% of the time.  I learned a lot from that cat. [cat]

Don't let them bully you into joining their club.

Bully?  [idontknow]  I'm a club member but not because I was bullied.  I felt no pressure to join, chose where my collection would begin, and am free to quit whenever I wish.

The reason I joined was, in a word, convenience.  I'm sent an email before and after the next release is shipped, it comes to my mailbox (albeit slowly), and my card is charged.

Yes, bullied.  They are blatently trying to force fans to join the club simply to be able to buy the pre-Barnabas eps, that's a plain as the nose on one's face.  If they weren't doing this, they'd be available to EVERYONE right away and not a year after the so-called CLUB members can buy them.

I think you mean that buying the DVDs when they're released requires joining MPI's club, which IS a bona fide DVD club that, to me, seems less restrictive than most.  I don't think it's such a hot marketing decision, but bullying implies intimidation, and when I hear upfront that I can purchase directly from them when they're released or wait an unknown period of time (I don't think they've said it would be a year, have they?) to buy them from someone else, I don't see any blatant force, intimidation, bullying, or coercion in that, but that's me.

Jackie,

Thanks for supplying that math lesson! I knew the cost was a lot more, but it's really eye-popping when you see it worked out in front of you!
-------
Personally, I don't really care if MPI doesn't ever release the pre-Barn episodes to the public because I don't care to own them. If they released them, yes, I'd probably invest in them. But if they don't, it won't be any great loss to me. I liked them but I much prefer the Barnabas episodes. I don't think they'd hold out though--I mean I wonder what the ratio of DS fans who are in the club to DS fans who aren't is. I can't imagine that it's very different. I would expect more DS fans to NOT be in the club, given the humongous price differences, so it would be utterly stupid of them to withhold the DVDs.

If I may suggest, check out the pre-Barnabas Laura story with Diana Millay.
It begins slowly but gets creepy as things progress.
It was the show's first full fledged supernatural story & is worth seeing.

The very first episode is good to have, as are the occasional ghost eps that followed~~but you could probably get them cheap on VHS at this point.

The appearence of Bill Malloy's ghost & the early appearences of Josette were important to the show's
future development.
They led to Barnabas.

This will be brief:  my reason for joining MPI is "what Midnight said!" PLUS, I want that "members only" complete boxed CD set of ALL the Cobert DS music cues.  And the free Barnabas and Angelique bobbleheads-not something I would actually choose to buy-look nice on my knick-knack shelf.  The coffin is in storage, waiting for more bobbleheads....and then I'll probably offer them all on eBay and pay for my retirement.   ;)

I've seen the episodes before, but only once, maybe some of them twice. I'd love to have them, don't get me wrong, but if they don't get released I wouldn't be too upset. It would suck, but I'm happy that DS ever made it to DVD in the first place!

Amen to that!  The day I heard Dark Shadows was on DVD was the day I decided I would buy a DVD player.

Just got mine today, whoo-hoo!  Watched A Fan Remembers, which they showed at the Banquet, the Frid promos for NJ Network, which I recently watched on YouTube and rehersal footage of LP during ep 1001.  Good stuff!  Can't wait to get home and finish watching all the extras!   ;D

Hear hear!  The price at DDD are actually pretty tempting, and Ebay is my best friend when it comes to DS, whether it be a new or gently used set that I can get for sometimes $10-20.  I may not collect them in order, but I will have the whole set one day.

I considered joining MPI's DVD club, but I just don't see the value in it for me, even though I would dearly love to get my hands on the Pre Barn eps ASAP!  Patience is indeed a virtue :)

Glorioski!  I somehow missed the announcement that the boxed set of Cobert's DS music is going to be a bloody "members only" item.  Shite!

Glad I checked this thread again, though.  I'd just as soon know. At least I do have all the previously existing releases which must have 99 percent of all the music ever used on the show...

I agree G, I got Volumes 1-4, the HODS/NODS compilation and the 30th Anniversary Soundtrack.  Think I'm all set for DS music!   ;D

Buzz!  Our Libraries are TWINS!  *giggles*

I don't have the original CD of DS 1, though--I have the Rhino reissue with the edited Ron Barry interviews.  Which one had the Selby interview?  I think that was the Varese Sarabande one?

I had all the pre-Barn VHS tapes except for #17 & 22, and missed the 30 day deal where MPI was selling them off for about $6 ea. before going to DVD. I wrote, begged and pleaded, and they did sell me those after the deadline at the sale price..if you are missing just a few, it might be worth asking them, rather than having to wait a year for the DVDs.
