All I've come up with so far is:

Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins (already a given)
Cate Blanchett as Angelique
Kate Hudson as Carolyn

and I'm tossing between Helen Mirren, Diane Keaton, and Judi Dench as Elizabeth, though I'm leaning heavily towards Judi Dench.

Allison Janney as Julia Hoffman.

Crispin Glover would be perfect for Willie. And Jack Nicholson would make a great Jason McGuire, but I doubt there will be room for McGuire in the film.

Barnabas - Johnny Depp
I went ahead and made up 1795 characters too , as hopefully a sequel will go to 1795.Borrowed the idea of Jack Nicholson , great idea , and wouldn't he make an incredible Trask ?I also mixed up the flashback characters a little bit , i think it works better with my casting choices.
Julia/Natalie -Susan Sarandon
Elizabeth/Naomi - Sigorney Weaver
Roger/Jeremiah -Bruce Campbell
Prof Stokes/Joshua - David Warner
Mrs Johnson /Abigail - Louise Fletcher
Viki/Josette- Rose Mc Gowan
Carolyn /Millicent - Sarah Michelle Geller
Sam/Andre - William Shatner
Maggie/1795 servant- Allison Mack
Joe /Nathan - Tom Welling
Angelique - Nicole Kidman
Jason McGuire/Rev Trask - Jack Nicholson
Sarah - Dakota Fanning
Willie/Ben - Crispin Glover

I think casting an unknown for Vicki would be preferable for me, because it would be more believable, I think. Also, I hope that when the movie goes through that we don't have one of those all-star casts where everyone who is big in Hollywood plays someone in the movie. I think that would take heavily away from the atmosphere and it wouldn't do justice to the film or the legacy of DS.

This is too funny - we both had the same idea for Julia (Susan Sarandon) and Carolyn (Sarah Michelle Gellar). Although technically Carolyn was only 18 when DS debuted, but Nancy Barrett had to be older than that.

I could also see Kathleen Turner as Julia, though, and thought Dame Judi Dench would be a natural as Elizabeth. I like TVGuide.com's idea of using Angelina Jolie as Angelique. She'd be perfect I think. Louise Fletcher is a brilliant idea for Mrs. Johnson!

My idea for Victoria is Anne Hathaway, I think she'd be a natural.

I *think* Nancy was 22 was DS debuted. I believe she was born in October '43.

I thought that was an interesting choice. And for those who may have missed that posting, check here: Johnny Depp in Dark Shadows (http://community.tvguide.com/blog-entry/TVGuide-News-Blog/Todays-News/Johnny-Depp-Dark/800019441). Be sure to check out the comments too because a few are interesting.

The only problem with Allison Janney or Susan Sarandon as Julia would be that I'd want both of them to be in it!    Either one might be willing to do it too.    Sign either one, and my interest level would jump by a factor of ten.

No room for Jason?  I doubt the movie would have enough room for Jack Nicholson.    He and C Glover would be great in it though.

It would be great for Anne to go from the Princess Diaries to DS.  But then she was also in the Devil Wears Prada?? It would be good for some one there that work on show. David might be able to do it.  Maybe one of the very dedicated fans that wasn't Deep sinxe he was one of the parts.

Has anyone ever figured out what was the magic. The actors, the live to tape, Is that were the electricey came from.  Maybe it was that they were doing something  very different.

I do kind of like Anne Hathaway as Vicki. That's a pretty good choice. Loved her in The Devil Wears Prada.

And Alison Janney as Julia would be perfect.

As for SMG as Carolyn, I don't think so. I'd be like "Where's your stake at Buffy? There's a vampire on the loose!"

Johnny Depp Barnabas Collins
Julianne Moore  as Dr Jullia Hoffman
Joan Allen as Elizabeth Stoddard
Aaron Eckhart as Roger Collins
Matthew McConaughey as Burke Devlin
Lindsey Lohan as Angelique
Hillary Duff as Vitoria Winters
Heath Leger as Joe Haskell
Scarlet Johansen as Carolyn Stoddard
Shia LaBeouf  as Willie Loomis
Evan Rachel Wood as  Maggie Evans
John Goodman as Sam Evans

Here's my take on these choices:
Depp good
Moore-good (although I prefer someone less attractive--not ugly, but not overly good looking either)  I recently stated in an email to friends that perhaps a 180 degree change is needed here and they could give us a man named JULIAN and make him gay and pining for Barnabas.  That could be very interesting.  The could get someone like Jude Law maybe...

Allen-good, can definitely see her in that role!
Eckart-WAY too young for Roger, maybe Joe Haskell though...
McConaughey-good, if he can lose his accent for the role, don't think Burke was southern
Lohan-no way, she hasn't got the talent, or CLASS, to pull it off.  Sorry.  I'd say the chick from Lost who plays Juliette (hey she's a deceitful bitch on that show, why not?!)
Duff-maybe, haven't seen her in too much...
Leger-could work if Eckart not available (now all we need is Jake Gyllanhall for a true Brokeback Shadows, LOL!)
Johansen-hmmm, maybe make her Vickie and have Duff in this role instead...
LaBeouf-don't know him so I'd say put Ledger here and leave Eckart in the Haskell role.
Wood-don't know her either, how about Rachel McAdams instead?
John Goodman-good choice, could also see him as either Sheriff Patterson or Stokes.

Now a couple additions:
Freddie Highmore (played Charlie in 'Charlie & the Chocolate Factory) as David (he's 15 so David could be a troubled teen instead of a troubled boy--much more dangerous & sinister I think to have a deranged teen running around Collinwood)

Anna Sophia Robb (was Violet in 'Charlie & the Choc. Factory) as Amy (she's 14 so it's perfect)
Jason Issacs-Roger (sans his Brit accent)

Cate Blanchett as Angelique
Kate Hudson as Carolyn

and I'm tossing between Helen Mirren, Diane Keaton, and Judi Dench as Elizabeth, though I'm leaning heavily towards Judi Dench.

Blanchett and Hudson-GREAT choices, could definitely see this!  Like all 3 choices for Liz too-Dench leading the pack.  However, she IS 73 and perhaps too old?

Comments on other cousins choices:

Janney as Julia--PERFECT!  No ugly, but not a glamor girl either!
Glover as Willie-also perfect, he's just weird enough to spin it into an Oscar
Fletcher as Mrs. J would be good were she not too old.  If she were the age now that she was when she did 'Cuckoo's Nest' then a definite yes!

Gellar as Carolyn, liked it, but then, as Brandon said, would you think Buffy for 2 hours?
Shatner-LOVE him, but he's too old and let's face it, he tends to overact and that could lead to a camp factor (think Kirk on ST)

Hathaway as Vickie-good choice, could see it
Kidman-now SHE'S got the talent and class to pull off ol' Angie!
Fanning as Sarah, yep, works for me
Turner as Julia, another good choice if not Janney.

How about Gena Rowlands as Elizabeth? Rowlands is one of the "grande dames" of current American movies & a brilliant actress to boot!

I know some of you might think I'm crazy, but if Burke Devlin is a character in the film, I think Mark Wahlberg would be an interesting choice. Remember, Burke was originally from the wrong side of the tracks in Collinsport & also served time in prison - he SHOULD be a little rough around the edges. Plus, he has a Boston accent!

Keira Knightley was wonderful as Elizabeth Bennett in that recent film version of PRIDE & PREJUDICE - she has the perfect qualities to play Victoria Winters. Knightley has beauty, charm, sensitiviy & just the right amount of spunk. Surely they'll allow Vicki not to be so clueless in a 21st century version of DS!

Maybe Hayden Panettiere as Carolyn? Panettiere plays Claire (the cheerleader) on HEROES.

I always thought Maggie Evans should be a little more down-to-earth - the atypical smalltown girl. I would consider Evangeline Lilly - she's Kate on LOST.

Dominic Monaghan as Willie Loomis? He was Merry in the LORD OF THE RINGS films & Charlie on LOST. Monaghan is good at playing flustered, easily rattled fellows & that's some of the qualities needed for Willie.

Joe Haskell must be played by someone as dreamy as possible - so I nominate Jake Gyllanhall. Every gay man in America would then see the movie. Just make sure there are plenty of shirtless shots.

Michael Emerson - creepy Ben on LOST - as Rev. Trask!!! You know it would be sensational!!!

This is a very unorthodox casting choice, but imagine Mary Lynn Rajskub as Sarah Johnson. Yes, she is too young but then who said we need a middle-aged Mrs. Johnson? Rajskub is the magnificent Chloe on 24. I can picture Rajskub eavesdropping at the closed doors of the drawing room or greeting Barnabas when he arrives at Collinwood - she would be immediately suspicious!

I'm surprised none of you have mentioned this, but if its a Johnny Depp/Tim Burton collaboration, you a re going to get...Helena Bonham Cater as Julia. Then maybe Paul Reubens as Willie, Jeffrey Jones as Roger and Michael Gough as the Eagle Hill Caretaker.  (I would have liked Julianne Morre as Julia as remember Julia should be only slightly older than Barnabas but more mature than Vicki.)
I like the choices mentioned of Anne Hathaway as Vickie/Josette, and Nicole Kidman, Scarlett Johansen or Angelina Jolie as Angelique. I hope they keep Josette a brunette and Angelique a blonde, I didn't care as much for the reversal on the WB pilot. I like Tom Welling as Joe/Nathan too. Welling is pretty underrated. What about Jaclyn Smith, Leslie Anne Downe or Jane Seymour as Elizabeth?
Do realize Depp is very much going to put his own "twist" on this, please reference his takes on Willie Wonka, Ichabod Crane (he didn't go all Don Knotts/Jeff Goldblum there), and Ed Wood (as Jon Lovitz?) Thinking it over, the closest to Barnabas that Depp has done may have been Gilbert Grape, which for me bodes well as it may be his most under appreciated performance.
To me Burton can be brilliant (Beetlejuice), reviatlizing (Batman), heart breaking (Ed Wood, which is one of the best films about friendship ever), but he can also be too campy (Mars Attacks I still don't know what THAT was all about) or just plain mssing the target (Planet of the Apes, did he not realize astrnaut Taylor needed a Real Dr. Zaius to play against, what a lost opportunity). For too many years, I have hated to hear "Dark Shadows referred to , over and over as, "the campy vampire soap", so that's the very last thing I want to see happen for real. Don't make it so. So, who knows, be careful what you wish for...

the vermillion-tressed julianne moore would be divine as the good doctor hoffman!

i can also see anne hathaway as vicki to some extent.

casting for liz is going to to difficult.she needs to come across as fundamentaly "good" but also slightly aloof and aristocratic.

someone mentioned a wish for maggie to become slightly more "down to earth" and i'm all for the character returning to her true nature.if one recalls maggie in the early episodes she's that proverbial "salt of the earth",the "working girl with the heart of gold".she was supposed to be a nice antidote to the petulant and high-strung carolyn and the virginal and naive vicki...later on she just becomes a generic d.s. ingenue.

Maggie Evans was also supposed to be an Eve Arden type - the wisecracking sidekick.  Arden received an Oscar nomination for playing Joan Crawford's pal in MILDRED PIERCE. I always wished Maggie had retained that no-nonsense gumption when she became governess at Collinwood - she might have been a force to reckon with!

Not in the role of Julia, but J99 posted this to the sticky topic.  You may have seen it by now:  ;)
I'm not so worried about Burton or Depp, i think they have the chops. . the issue in my mind is (if they went Team Burton-Depp) who would Helena Bonham Carter (Mrs. Burton) portray.  I like her but she's Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd?  That one threw me .. i don't see that.  she'd be a good Aunt Abigail or maybe even Natalie duPres?

Maybe Hayden Panettiere as Carolyn? Panettiere plays Claire (the cheerleader) on HEROES.

Interesting you should say this now, because only yesterday I was introduced to her singing voice and it was evocative of Nancy Barrett's vocals, but I'm sorry to say not in a good way.  (Hayden sings "Try" on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTDumsoU5iY))

OMG - I'd completely forgotten about that disaster! (But then, most lovers of good film have tried their best to forget it. Way to kill a potential franchise, Tim!!  >:() And the fact that Burton made it is yet more reason to hope he isn't involved in Depp's DS film.

Rowlands would be good if she were younger!  But at 77 she's too old.  Liz should be 50ish, not elderly.
Wahlberg as Burke, Knightly as Vickie, Lilly as Maggie, Monaghan as Willie (and he's available now he's been killed off Lost), Gyllanhal as Joe, Emerson as Trask and Carter as either Abigail or Natalie I can definitely see.  I can also see J. Smith, LA Down or Seymour as Liz.

Cate Blanchett would be a great Angelique

To be honest I picture Johnny Depp more as Quentin, but he's a good actor and thus I'm sure he could pull of Barnabas with his own twist.  Alan Rickman would have made a very good Barnabas though.

I think Tim Burton would be good as director but, if so, he'd better leave the odd humor out of it.  I really liked Sleepy Hollow, and Tim Burton "gets it" with regards to creating a rich fantasy world with gothic horror elements.  Nevertheless. the fun sense of humor evident in many of his films would not work in DS.  No "campy" please.  But judging from Sleepy Hollow I think Tim could do it.

Victoria- Julia Stiles
Willie Loomis- Crispin Glover

I'm still partial to Faye Dunaway, in spite of the caps, for the role of Elizabeth, although Glenn Close (as markyboo mentioned) would probably do a good job in the role.

I would love to see Julianne Moore as Julia.

For Roger, I was thinking Kevin Spacey because he could pull off the withering sarcasm that Louis Edmonds brought to the role.

I tried casting a few roles on a Depp forum I belong to, in part to introduce a few of the possible characters:

--Elizabeth Collins Stoddard- Helen Mirren
--Roger Collins- Tom Hollander (Cutler Beckett in the Pirates of the Caribbean films, but I like Kevin Spacey, too)
--Carolyn Stoddard- Hayden Panettiere (Heroes)
--Victoria Winters- Anne Hathaway
--David Collins- Freddy Highmore (Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, Finding Neverland)  he might be too old, but he's worked well with Johnny before
--Amy Jennings- AnaSophia Robb (Violet Beauregard in Charlie & The Chocolate Factory) going on a theme here! Though she might be too old by the time the movie gets filmed, I like the idea of the old and new Violets playing this character
--Maggy Evans- Maggy Gyllenhaal
--Sam Evans- Kevin McNally (Mr. Gibbs in the Pirates films)
--Professor Stokes (drew a blank)
--Julia Hoffman- Glenn Close (a friend suggested this, and it was the best choice I thought of)
--Quentin- Cillian Murphy
--Willy Loomis- Jim Carrey (love the idea of Crispin Glover, though!)
--Angelique- Naomi Watts.
--Reverend Trask (drew a blank)

Buzz--

I love Dame Judi as Elizabeth, even though she is in her 70s, which is why I suggested Kate Hudson as Carolyn, because she's could believably play a 25-30 year old woman. I don't know her actual age, however. For me, I like to think of Elizabeth as the shuttered, lord-of-the-manner, aristocratic type, that isn't overly welcoming, but isn't completely insensitive and rude either. She's got secrets to keep, a family to protect, so from an outsiders POV, she's going to give a little shiver while being motherly at the same time. So I think Dame Judi or Helen Mirren would probably be able to convey this.

Angelique needs to stay a blonde, and I have to give a resounding NO to the idea of Angelique Jolie. She could play seductive, but we need someone who can be seductive, challenging, vindictive, bitchy, and smarmy all at once. After seeing Cate Blanchett in "Notes on a Scandal", I'd simply die to get her and Dame Judi in the same scene together again!

As for Julia, I think Moore or Janney could pull it off. Either one could be calculating, productive, lustful, and piercing all rolled up into one.

I'm afraid that I want and hope that the producers/casting directors shy heavily away from the younger Hollywood crowd--Hayden Panetierre, Lindsay Lohan, etc--because I just don't think any of them have the credentials or acting ability that would blow me away.

I know who would be a good Sam Evans, Dan Roebuck (Dr. Arzt on "Lost", was in Matlock, River's Edge...") Dan is a big classic horror fan as well and would bring the proper respect to the part.
Here's speculation for the group, as we all like's Tim Buton's style, most especially his design in for example "Batman",, but many of us do have some concerns with putting too much humor (or the dreaded "c-word", camp") I wonder what M Night Shyamalan or Christopher Nolan might do with DS? There's so few horror/mystery directors around now suited for DS. As much as I like them, I'd rule out Sam Raimi, Tobe Hooper or George Romero for obvious reasons. (great storytellers but too graphic, although Raimi's "A Simple Plan" shows great subtlety.) Another very good but less well know direct is Robert Tinnell. I highly reccomend his 1996 "Frankenstein and Me" especially for people who have adolescent kids that like scary films. The film takes place in the 1960's and the kids are even watching Shadows in one scene. Tinnell's was especially good at working with the young actors in the film, as well as getting one of Burt Reynold's best performances ever. (really)

For some reason, I've had a hard time coming up with an actor to play Prof. Stokes (a testament to how superb Thayer David was in the role?), but I'll throw a name in the ring. How about Richard Griffiths, a portly, British character actor? Most of you probably know him as the mean uncle, Vernon Dursley, in the Harry Potter films. He won a Tony award for his performance in THE HISTORY BOYS & recreated the role in the wonderful film version.

Also, two possibilities as Roger Collins -

1. Victor Garber

2. John Slattery - a character actor I've seen in the past on HOMEFRONT & JACK AND BOBBY. He can currently be seen on DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES (he's Gabby's new hubby) & on AMC's damn good new series, MADMEN.

Guillermo del Toro (Devil's Backbone, Pan's Labyrinth) might be a good choice for director as well.  He definitely has the ability to create a mystical gothic world on film, and he is a big fan of classic horror films.  I'd go with either del Toro or Tim Burton (sans humor).  BTW, isn't Burton a DS fan too?  I thought I had read that somewhere.

;D If Quentin Tarentino directs, do you think he'll recast the role of Barnabas & give it to Travolta instead? And cast Uma Thurman as Vicki Winters? And maybe have a scene at the Blue Whale where Barnabas & Vicki break into the Twist on the dance floor? Oh, I hope he'll have Carolyn call everyone "Honey Bunny" !

Seriously, Guillermo del Toro would be an excellent choice. PAN'S LABYRINTH is a wonderful film! I would also love to see Alfonso Cuaron direct. He has directed a steady stream of fine films, including the third & best (so far) of the Harry Potter movies & last year's very fine CHILDREN OF MEN.

I just finished watching Pan's Labyrinth & I must agree with Markyboo.
Del Toro is a magnificent director who'd know how to convey the other-worldliness that DS needs.
He'd be a perfect choice.

Tarantino would turn DS into a violent, T & A campfest.
YUCK!

I wonder what M Night Shyamalan or Christopher Nolan might do with DS?

To echo Claude, M would no doubt put himself in the movie in a cameo, which I personally wouldn't mind so long as it didn't detract from the movie or essence of DS.  For sure he'd add some red symbolism as well (LOVES to do that in his films for some reason) but unlike the WB pilot it would be subtle.

I like Curran as a possible director as I too like HP 3 as the best of the 5 so far.  That said however, one thing he did to the HP franchise that I do NOT like is he totally changed an essential componant in the form of HIS vision of Dumbledore.  I realize of course that Richard Harris had died and Michael Gambon stepped into Dumbledore's pointy wizard shoes, but to so DRASTICALLY alter his appearance is something I still have a problem w/after 3 films w/Gambon as the wisely headmaster of Hogwarts.  Now don't get me wrong, I think Michael has done a FABULOUS job as D and I can accept him w/no problem in the role, but I think his appearance (i.e. choice of costume) and personality should have remained as Richard played it, if nothing else for continuity.  I also believe that Harris simply LOOKED like D, at least how *I* pictured him when reading the books.

How does this all relate to him directing DS, well, I'd be afraid that he's decide to ditch something about Barnabas' (or another key character's) appearance.  For example he may decide to ditch the wolf head cane, or the ring, or the Inverness etc...If he came in and did something so out of what WE as longtime fans have come to accept, expect and CHERISH about Barnabas, that would ruin the film for me.

Just my 2 pesos... 8)

;) I now have decided that the director for the upcoming DS film should be - wait for it! - Adam Shankman, the director of HAIRSPRAY, currently playing at your local cinema complex. John Travolta - in drag once again! - could play Elizabeth Stoddard...Christopher Walken as Barnabas...Queen Latifah as Dr. Julia Hoffman...and that adorable Zac Efron as David Collins! Plus John Waters does a cameo as Diabolos, Prince of Darkness!

Why the DS film could even begin with "Welcome to the 60's", HAIRSPRAY's opening number! Can't you just picture the good people of Collinsport pouring out of the Blue Whale, the Collinsport Inn, the Todd Antique Shop and the Eagle Hill graveyard all singing and all dancing!

Hate to burst your bubble Markyboo, but Welcome to the 60's is not the opening number in Hairspray, it's actually about 1/2 way thru the movie/play.  The opening number is Good Morning Baltimore.   8)

I, for one, DEFINITELY DO NOT want Cauron directing the DS movie. I HATED the 3rd HP movie. I thought it was completely boring, visually unappealing (mostly because he changed the set around so much to shove that big clock into the side of Hogwarts, and moved Hagrids hut halfway around the mountain), and overall the WORST movie of the 5 released so far. I mean, I kind of liked the book, but the movie was awful. I tried and tried to like it, but I just can't. Boo.

Del Torro would work for me, but I'm still joansing for Burton.

:o Oops...you're right...this is what happens when you don't get enough sleep & I am still recovering from a double feature last night: SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE & TOP CHEF...those shows make me very aggressive...

Anyway, maybe Vicki Winters could arrive from Baltimore instead of NYC & sing "Good Morning Baltimore" before she boards the train to Collinsport?

;D If Quentin Tarentino directs, do you think he'll recast the role of Barnabas & give it to Travolta instead? And cast Uma Thurman as Vicki Winters? And maybe have a scene at the Blue Whale where Barnabas & Vicki break into the Twist on the dance floor? Oh, I hope he'll have Carolyn call everyone "Honey Bunny" !

I actually sort of like these ideas -- LOL!!

;) I now have decided that the director for the upcoming DS film should be - wait for it!

Yes!  "Good Morning, Collinsport!"  I love it!!!  LOL!   [band] [gramophone] [skelleton_2] [dancing_skeletons]

Boo.

I like Cauron as a director. My problem with the 3rd HP came from what was left out of the script and what some of the time was wasted on. I like the atmosphere Cauron created.

I do, however, think that if it was done in the style of his Sleepy Hollow movie, Burton would be great at a 1795 film.

As much as I love Tim Burton and his many collaborations with Johnny Depp (and I cannot wait for Sweeney Todd!!), for some reason he feels a little wrong for Dark Shadows.  I can't put my finger on why.  But I'm sure if he ends up being involved he'd do great.  I think del Toro is a great choice; Tarantino.. maybe not so much so (though I loved Kill Bill 1&2).

Interesting article, thanks for posting is Lori!

I agree with much of what he's said except that whoever plays Vicki will be crucial too, especially if the story is written from her point of view entering Collinwood, much like all three series have begun. If it isn't, and Vicki is mostly a secondary character or worse, only seen a few times, who gives a hoot who plays her. But I think that she'll probably be important to the plot if they do it in the present.

Finally came up with my cast list - LOL!  (Yes, a realistic one, not my vampire movie musical ultimate fantasy -- sigh.  LOL!!)   Liked a lot of the suggestions I already saw here, so included a lot of them. :)

Marianne Muellerlalle -- Mrs. Johnson
Shia LaBeouf -- Willie
Jude Law or Heath Ledger -- Quentin
Anne Hathaway -- Vickie
Jane Seymour -- Elizabeth
Naomie Harris -- Angelique
Daniel Craig -- Roger
Keira Knightly or Brittany Snow -- Carolyn
Judy Davis -- Julia Hoffman
Jake Gyllenhaal -- Joe
Abigail Breslin -- Sarah
John Goodman -- Sam
Katie Holmes -- Maggie

Haven't come up with a David.  Maybe the boy in that "Joshua" movie?

Hey Markyboo, very sadly I think Steve Buscemi is now too old to play Willie.  I just saw him in a hilarious cameo bit in the new movie Paris je t'aime.

If you've never seen him in his first breakthrough role in the 1980s movie Parting glances, do try and track it down.  It's somewhat obscure but soooo stunningly good!

Shia Le Bouef~~cute as a button but too young to be Willie!

I have seen PARTING GLANCES! It is a superb film & one of the earliest films to have the courage to talk about AIDS. I think I still have a copy of the movie on videotape.

Judy Davis is a divine choice for Julia Hoffman!

How about Hugh Jackman as Quentin?

boy anne hathaway is getting high marks as a nice choice for victoria.someone should contact her agent.

in the span of a two hour movie i don't think that they're going to bother with alot of "secondary" characters.if vicki is on board she's going to be pivotal so casting her well is crucial.

and yes julia, willie and angelique will be critical as well.even though liz will probably end up being a small,cameo-like role i'm very curious to see who they cast.

If any of you are fans of the tv show "Lost" then you already know that Josh Holloway (Sawyer) was BORN  to play Quentin Collins, he has the attitude down to a tee....

I think Burton is the obvious choice for directors, but I would recommend David Fincher (Seven, Fight Club, Zodiac) All his films at the core are character pieces, and that would be perfect for DS

I think they also need to cast one of the original actors in the series in the movie, possibly David Selby as Roger or Jonathan Frid in a small cameo

I would also like to see Megan Fox (Transfomers) as Angelique, just look at her eyes and tell me she doesn't have the "look" of Angelique.......(you can dye her hair blonde to appease the hardcore fans)

I also think Crispin Glover would be perfect for Willie if they are willing to roll the dice with him...(he's crazy)

Crispin Glover has worked with Johnny Depp twice before (in What's Eating Gilbert Grape and Dead Man) so the choice might not be that outlandish.  I think he'd make a great Willie!

I would really love for Jonathan or David or any of the other original cast members to have small parts in the film; I hope they consider that idea!

I watch Lost, and agree that Josh Holloway would make a great Quentin.  But I've just seen Cillian Murphy in 2 films recently (in Sunshine, and i just rented Batman Begins), and I still think he'd be fantastic, too.  He is smaller than David Selby, but he has the same amazing piercing eyes!

What about Christopher Walken as Barnabas Collins? Ever see him in the THE ADDICTION where he plays the part of a vampire who has overcome his "addiction" through fasting and meditation? He was amazing. I think he could be perfect. Maybe he's a little old for the part, but so was Frid, wasn't he? I'd kinda like to see an older Barnabas anyway. I'm sick of the Anne Rice-style eternally beautiful and youthful types.

Paul Giamatti as Tony Peterson(present) and Revrend Trask (1795)

I thought about Paul Giamatti as Willie Loomis. And if you wanted a scuzzy, ratty Willie Loomis, I can't imagine anyone better than Steve Buscemi.
I love Buscemi, but personally, I have had my fill of Willie "Jim Fyfe" style.  Monaghan would do well by it, however.

I tend to see the the role of Willie as it developed on the original series:  someone who initially comes under the thrall of the the vampire and is a very unwilling servant at first, but greq to not just depend on one another but also care for one another.  Wille and Barn need to have a very close bond beyond just that of blood.  I am not suggesting anything homoerotic, just a very subtle closeness just under the surface of the vampire/thrall master/servant distance.

As for other casting choices, I like the idea of Hathaway as Vicki but based on Devil wears Prada, she seems just this side of "hey, I'm so cute, aren't I?"  Has anyone seen Becoming Jane yet?  I hear she is good but I would like to see the Vicki character with more range.

I love the idea of Jason Issacs (Lucious, oops I mean Lucius Malfoy) as Roger, and leave the accent! I love Edmonds stilted stiff upper lip New England Old money pretension.

Having just seen The History Boys film, I would also love to see Griffiths as Stokes.

Not watching much current TV any more, The Lost references are, ahem, Lost on me ;), but how about:

Zach Quinto (Heroes) - Peterson/Trask
Billy Piper (Rose on Doctor Who) - Carolyn or (perhaps better) Angelique
John Barrowman (Captain Jack on Doctor Who/Torchwood) - Joe Haskell
Allison Hannigan (Willow) - Vickie perhaps?  Or Maggie?
Frances de la Tour (Madame Maxime/Mrs. Lintott (History Boys) - Julia or Mrs, Johnson/Abigail, or Elizabeth/Naomi
Helena Bonham Carter - possibly as natural for Angelique, but lets cast against type and make her Josette, in a potential 1795 Flashback Film.
Penelope Wilton (Harriet Jones, Prime Minister) - Elizabeth

Dark Shadows Cast from Heroes -

Danielle Savre(Jackie) - Carolyn
Erick Avari (Chandra Suresh) - Stokes
Nora Zehetner (Eden) - Vicki/Josette
Tawny Cypress (Simone) - Julia
Ali Larter (Niki/Jessica) - Angelique (?)
Richard Roundtree (Charles Duvall) - Sam Evans
Leonard Roberts (DL) - Burke
Santiago Cabrera (Isaac) - Joe Haskell
Greg Grunberg - Sherriff Patterson
Christine Rose (Angela Petrelli) - Elizabeth
Zach Quinto (Sylar) - Tony Peterson
Jack Coleman (Horn Rimmed Glasses) - Roger
Adrian Pasdar (Nathan) - Quentin
Milo Ventimiglia (Peter) - The Jennings Boys/Twins
Matthew John Armstrong (Sprague) - Willie Loomis/Ben Loomis
Jimmy Jean-Louis (the Haitian) - Matthew Morgan
Ashley Crow (Claire's Mom) - Mrs. Johnson/Abigail

I had listed Tawny Cypress as Maggie, coupling her with her Heroes father, Richard Roundtree as Sam, but I have since fallen in love with her as Hoffman (the screen would positively smoulder with her and Depp onscreen together.  But that leaves me without a Maggie.  Any suggestions for Maggie and/or Sam?

I believe Depp is on record as saying he wanted to "be" Barnabas when he was a kid, I don't know if he has stated anywhere that he wants to "play" Barnabas now. It seems likely that he would want to play Barnabas, but if he will or not remains to be seen. I hope he doesn't. I think he's one of the most talented actors working today, and he's one of my favorites, and I'm sure he would do a fine job as Barnabas, but I just think he's too pretty and too young looking.

I quite liked Alec Newman in the 04 pilot, but the one thing that I didn't like about him was the way he played the familiar scene where Barnabas calls Josette's name longingly like 4 times--the way he played it made it seems a little too cheesy.

And I could swear that a couple of the articles that I read that were posted in the other Depp movie topic said that Depp was going to star as Barnabas.

Johnny Depp is now 44, which I think is about the same age Jonathan Frid was on DS  :)  Plus, the movie will probably come out a few years from now.  While he's certainly young and pretty in real life, he can look older- see The Ninth Gate for an example.  Sweeney Todd, too, from the few pix that have surfaced so far.  I think he'll be great as Barnabas!  Though I agree- he could also play Victoria with no problem  ;)

He doesn't have to look older, though, especially if they're doing the 1795 storyline.

Depp can look his age, but he can also look years younger than what he actually is. A couple of years won't make much difference in his case, I'd wager.

He's pretty, but he's rather striking, too, and it's about his talent. He has more of it in a strand of his hair than most actors have, period, IMO, and that's what matters most. If he doesn't actually play the role, there will be no words on this earth to describe my feelings of disappointment.

As much as I'd love to see Mr. Depp as Barnabas, I really have mixed feelings about this remake.

BUT! All doubts aside, let's see who I can imagine in these roles...

I think Hugh Jackman would be great for Quentin. For some reason he reminds me of David Selby. Also either Cillian Murphy or Josh Holloway might be a good choice.
I'm a little stumped on Angelique. Someone somewhere suggested Vanessa Williams. She'd probably be a good choice.
The little girl from Signs (What's her name? I'm drawing a blank.) would be good for Sarah, if she isn't too old by now. If she is, then she could be Amy (if there will be room for Amy in this remake...)

"Willie Loomis," I believe, on another post (and maybe this one as well) suggested Tim Curry for Roger. I like that. I like it a lot.  :)
I'm having trouble thinking of any actress "wholesome" enough for Victoria. The only one I'm coming up with is Anne Hathaway. I think Reese Witherspoon would be a great Carolyn.

This is difficult!

The girl from "Signs" is Abigail Breslin. She's since been in "Little Miss Sunshine", "No Reservations", and other movies. She'd make a great Sarah, but she's such a wonderful actress that I wouldn't dare cast her in a small part. So the Sarah part would have to be very pronounced and involved in the plot.
