Calendar Events / Announcements '05 I / 2005 Dark Shadows Calendar?
« on: January 02, 2005, 04:55:04 PM »
Happy New Year!!!!

It's Murph here and I'm wondering if anyone knows if the Dark shadows 2005 Calendar is on sale.  I've bought it on the web the last few years but I can't seem to find it this year.  The one I'm inquiring about is one you hang on a wall and there is a black and white picture of a character for each month.  The December one had JF (as Barnabas) standing in front of his portrait in the lobby of the main house.  For each day there is a quote that a character said to another on that particular day during the shows run.  For instance December 31 had Barnabas to Flora: "Isn't it possible that Gerard knew about the head and also never tld anyone? (1840)

I've looked on the Calendar itself and I can't find anywhere who distributed it.

Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Current Talk '04 II / Samantha Collins - Virginia Vestoff vs. KLS
« on: August 14, 2004, 05:35:03 PM »
I am currently watching two different periods of Dark Shadows.  On the DVD's I'm at set 13 disc 3 but I haven't yet finished the videos I taped last year on Sci-fi.  I just finished watching the episode where Desmond is arrested for witchcraft.  I did see the show all the way through the last time it aired on Sci-fi about 3 1/2 years ago.

I got to thinking about the character of Samantha Collins.  I know that the part was originally written with KLS in mind but that was not meant to be when she left the series just before the 1840 time period began.

Samantha is a very complicated character with a lot more depth IMO than any of the characters KLS portrayed.  Virginia Vestoff did a great job portraying her.  I wonder if the character would have been as complex if KLS had portrayed her.  IMO the writer's always dumbed down KLS' characters and they rarely showed any depth at all.  In the beginning of the series Maggie Evans had spunk but starting with Barnabas kidnapping her I don't believe the character ever recovered from being the eternal victim and clueless SYT.

IMO the writers seemed to not have the confidence in KLS to carryoff a complex character so they didn't write one for her.  I don't really know if KLS had the acting ability to carry it off because I never saw her in anything else besides Dark Shadows.  I think when the writers realized the acting chops of Virginia Vestoff they created a very complex character for her.  Maybe she would have been just as complex a character with KLS portraying her but I tend to believe they would have dumbed her down.  Alas, we'll never know.

What do you think?

I didn't see this posted so please excuse me if it was already mentioned.......

Kate Jackson guest starred on NBC's "Third Watch".  It's my understanding it's a two parter that began last Friday and concludes this week.  She and Henry Winkler play husband and wife.  I don't know anything about the story as I taped it but have not had the time yet to watch it.

I just thought some Kate fans would like to watch it in case they didn't know it was going to be on.

Hello everyone,

If this post isn't allowed I'm sure MB will delete it.  (Although I believe this is less off topic than some that are allowed to stay.)

I donated blood today and I feel great!!!  I contacted the local United Blood Services about a month ago and set up for them to come to my work where about 20 of my co-workers and I donated our blood.

I posted this because I believe in the case of the terrible tragedy in Spain a lot of us feel helpless like what can we do to help.  Few of us, if any, are going to make a huge difference in this world but if we can better the environment that we find ourselves in every day, like our work, home, church or the city we live in then we've done something positive.  Donating blood does this for me.  I like to donate about every eight weeks and have done so for the last 13 years.  I'm  not making a huge difference but I am doing something positive for the community I live in.  Believe me, no one hates needles more than I do but it's really not all that bad.  A slight discomfort for a few minutes is a small price to pay if it helps someone in need.  Who knows, someone I love or even myself might be in need someday and I'll be glad that a stranger to me took the time and donated their blood.  I realize not everyone can donate for various reasons but if you can I would encourage you to do so.

Current Talk '04 I / .....A little disappointed
« on: March 14, 2004, 05:24:02 PM »
I don't know if I'm in the minority but I was rather disappointed that the new series seems to be going in the direction of rehashing the originals' characters but hiring younger actors/actresses to portray them.  I was hoping this would be a 'Next Generation' with some of the original actors making at least occasional appearances as their character.  A sixty year old Nancy Barrett as Carolyn, etc.

I believe it would be more interesting to do a next generation than to have the same characters (we the fans of the original) know and love portrayed by different actors/actresses.  I realize they might want the vampire but Barnabas could have had a son and they could focus on him.  Maybe the son was turned into a vampire for the same reason his father was.  Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.......

The primary reason I would have rather had mostly new characters is because I would like to see all new plots and not a continual rehashing of the original series.  Although I never saw the '91 series it's my understanding that they rehashed the storylines of the original and maybe that is a major reason it didn't work.

I guess I'm a little more protective than I realized about this show, which to me reminds me very distinctly of my youth and a time of innocence.

I do plan to watch the new show and I hope it's good.

Calendar Events / Announcements '03 II / Jonathan Frid's recent shows
« on: November 03, 2003, 12:37:12 AM »
Hello everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone on this forum was able to attend one or both of Jonathan's shows this past week.

I was planning to attend but there was no way I could take anytime off work and with the distance between Phoenix and Toronto I would have had to miss at least one or two days. For the cost of the flight I would have wanted to see some of the sights and not just fly in and out.

I've never had the opportunity to attend any of Mr. Frid's shows and I feel bad that I'll likely never get the chance.  He will be 79 in a month so he has certainly earned the right to retire.

If anyone went I'd be interested on what you thought.

Thanks,

Current Talk '03 II / Pure Chemistry
« on: October 22, 2003, 02:00:03 AM »
The first episode today that featured Angelique and Barnabas was HOT!!!!

For those of us who love these two characters, today's first episode showcased the chemistry between these two.  IMO the screen really sizzled when they were on.  Ang made it clear she was on to him regarding Roxanne and that she wanted him back in her bed or Roxanne would die.

IMO there was sexual heat between Jonathan and Lara that just wasn't there between he and Grayson.  I'll admit I've always been a much bigger fan of Lara than I ever was of Grayson.  To me that is why Barnabas and Julia never got together because their chemistry seemed more like a brother, sister than sexual partners.

just my opinion...................

what do you think?

Current Talk '03 II / Just curious...............
« on: October 14, 2003, 10:10:40 PM »
I was looking at my 2003 DS Calander this morning and what it says for October 27 is "Barnabas, who was a young man in 1795, says he was just a boy during the witchcraft trials in 1692!!" (1970)  By the way the above episode happens to be the very next one shown next week on October 20.

My question is this.  Obviously the reason Jonathan Frid stated the above was because that is what the script called for.  But by October 1970, he had played Barnabas for 3 1/2 years and certainly knew his character couldn't possibly have been alive in 1692.  Did he not have the freedom as an actor to advise whoever wrote the script that there was no way Barnabas could have been alive in 1692 and that the script should be changed because of this.

As I pointed out in another post there is no way Barnabas could have made Roxanne a vampire in 1840 because he was chained in his coffin then.  I would think Mr. Frid should have had the freedom to point this out to the writers so they could adjust the storyline.  I remember another gaffe by the writers when Jerry Lacy first joined the cast as Tony Peterson.  The first time he talks with Carolyn he tells her he had seen her many times at the Country Club where he worked while she was growing up.  In the very next episode he tells her he had never seen her before they met at her house just the day before.  I can understand that maybe Mr. Lacy would be hesitant to point out this gaffe since it was only his second or third day on the show but certainly Ms Barrett (Carolyn) should have been able to point this out to the writers since this was such an obvious goof.

This makes me wonder how the actors were treated on the set.  I've heard that many times Management considers the actors as nothing more than cattle and I wonder if this was the case on this show since the actors say lines they have to know are not consistant with the character they are portraying.

Please know I am not faulting any of the actors at all because only they know the circumstances and how free they felt with making suggestions.  I say this because I've seen some interviews with Jonathan Frid and he seemed somewhat exasperated with the inconsistencies of his character.

I hope the actors were not treated badly on the set.  I know some of them have stated how much they enjoyed working there.  I know KLS has said there was never a day when she didn't want to go into work.

If everyone liked working there it would seem that there would have been more input from the actors as far as the script is concerned.

Current Talk '03 II / DS memories and the power of music
« on: September 20, 2003, 10:51:21 PM »
In a previous post I stated that "Dark Shadows" to me represents a time of innocence.  I was in elementary school just getting ready for junior high when it was taken off the air in 1971.  Shortly after it's cancellation my father died very suddenly and that event represents to me the end of my innocence.  So although "Dark Shadows" can drive me crazy sometimes with it's lack of consistency it will always hold a special place in my heart because it brings back great memories of running home from school everyday to watch Barnabas, Angelique and the gang.  A time of innocence...........

I love music and there is one song that speaks perfectly about my feelings for "Dark Shadows". The title of the song is "Bookends", by Simon and Garfunkel.

Words and music by Paul Simon

Time it was,
And what a time it was,
it was.................
a time of innocence,
a time of confidences.
long ago......it must be.....
I have a photograph.
preserve your memories;
They're all that's left you.

I believe the words to this song speak volumes and are timeless.  I'm always amazed how a song can take a person back to a place and time, maybe what was going on in their life when the song was popular.  In the case of this song, the words perfectly convey why the show still means so much after all these years.

As far as I'm concerned Paul Simon is one of the all time greatest songwriters in popular music.

Current Talk '03 II / More plot holes.................
« on: September 20, 2003, 02:27:56 AM »
I LOVE Dark Shadows but todays episode is exactly why I have to forget about making sense out of the plot holes and just enjoy the show for what it is.  To me it's a show that takes me back to a time of innocence.  It's my piece of nostalgia and I love it because of that but sometime it drives me nuts..............

I saw the end of the second episode today.  Time travelling Barnabas bit Roxanne in 1840 which is why in 1970 she is a vampire.  The only problem with this is that in 1840 Barnabas was still chained in his coffin.  He could not have bitten her so why is she a vampire in 1970?  I do think it's sloppy writing and I wish Dan Curtis would have invested in someone to keep the plotlines consistant but he didn't and I love the show for all that it means to me.

I saw that VH1 is going to air the top 200 Pop Icons this coming week.  Does anyone know if Barnabas is listed in this?  He certainly should be.  Anyone old enough to remember when the show originally aired can attest to the frenzy that he and the show had over the millions of kids who ran home from school everyday to watch, myself included.

Sometimes I wonder who puts these lists together.  Last week I was watching E! and their list of the 101 most shocking moments.  I was amazed that the Winona Ryder theft incident placed at 21 while the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper and Richie Valens placed at a less shocking 25.  Not only that but the news of the Beatles breakup and the death of James Dean placed at numbers 29 and 34 respectively.

Now, I wasn't even born when James Dean died or when those rock legends perished in that plane crash but I certainly recognize the impact of those events and how truly shocking they were at the time and the huge impact those events had for years to come.  How could those events place behind Winona Ryder stealing some items from Saks?  The only thing that makes sense to me is that those who made the decision on the rankings have yet to see their 25th birthday.

So, I won't be surprised if our favorite Vampire or even the show itself are excluded from this list VH1 has put together even though they rightfully belong in at least the top 25, in my opinion.  If it is excluded I believe I'll contact the show to inquire on how the list was put together.

I bring this up because I do not believe that Dark Shadows receives any of the respect it deserves.
I would really like to see this show remembered by the media for the impact the show had in it's time.  Unfortunately it doesn't look like this will happen anytime soon.

BTW,  sorry I haven't been posting very much lately but like everyone I'm sure, life happens.  I used to be up to date on the show and now because of work and other things I'm about six weeks behind.  The last episode I viewed this past weekend on the tapes I recorded is when Peter Bradford made his return to haunt Jeb during the Leviathan storyline.

Testing. 1, 2, 3... / Karma or no karma?
« on: July 06, 2003, 03:12:52 PM »
MB,

Maybe I'm just tired.  I guess I misread your explanation because I thought I would have access to the Karma and I still do not.

Because of my post total I have never had access to them before but upon reading your explanation of the new switch I thought that I now would.

If I'm not going to have access to Karma that's ok I just thought that I would.  I may now have access to it and don't realize it since I've never had it before.  If so where is it located?

Thanks for your help and for all you do.

Current Talk '03 I / OT/Whatever happened to.......
« on: June 01, 2003, 01:56:50 AM »
Robert Gerringer (Dr. Woodard #2)?

I'm in the process of watching my DVD's.  I'm on the second set and I'm curious if any of you know some other shows/movies Mr. Gerringer appeared in. He looks familiar to me and I know I didn't watch these episodes when they originally aired because I would have only been seven.

I really like him in this role.  In my opinion he defined the role.  The first actor who portrayed the good Dr. was only in I believe two episodes.  The third actor was in probably five or six episodes and he took over the role only because Mr. Gerringer wouldn't cross the picket lines of some strike that was going on in late September, early October of '67.

I'll admit the murder of Dr. Woodard didn't bother me as it should have because I just didn't like someone else in that role. It just didn't ring true to me.

Does anyone know if Mr. Gerringer is still alive?  If so he would probably be in his eighties or nineties.

Thanks,

Current Talk '03 I / Remembering the DS Plotlines?
« on: May 16, 2003, 01:03:12 PM »
I began to watch this show I believe around the age of nine, I'm not entirely sure.  The show went off the air when I was eleven.

I discovered the show again about two and a half years ago when I broke down and started receiving Direct TV.  Sci-Fi was airing the 1970PT episodes then.

I found then as I have with the current episodes that I remember bits and pieces of the show and most of the Primary cast but I do not remember the Plotlines at all.

For instance,  I remember being terrified as a child about being buried alive and realized why when I began watching the episodes that featured Elizabeth and her fear of the same.  I did not remember anything else about that plotline but that I did remember.  That was the first time anything seemed familiar so I believe I began watching the show around November, 1968 when these episodes first aired.  I also remember being intrigued with the Queen of Spades as a child and realized why when I watched the episodes from the 1897 timeline that featured Mrs. Trask and Tim Shaw.  I did remember the Parallel time episodes, again not the plotlines but the intrigue of the room and the same actors portraying different but usually similar characters.  In the 1841 PT episodes the only thing I remembered was the "lottery" but none of the plot.  In that time period I was surprised that I didn't remember that Jonathan Frid did not portray Barnabas but another character named Bramwell.

I'm wondering......... the first time you saw these episodes
as an adult, did you remember the Plotlines or just bits and pieces like myself.

Thanks,

Murph

Current Talk '03 I / Leviathan....the beginning of the end?
« on: April 11, 2003, 01:36:38 PM »
Now that we're into the beginning of this new storyline, I was wondering what the rest of you think..................

I have not seen these episodes since they originally aired back in 1969, I was ten, and so far I don't remember the story at all.

Reading this forum for the last year it seems that the Leviathan storyline is one of, if not the least favorite plotline of all at least those since Jonathan Frid joined the show as Barnabas.

I was wondering if the people of this Forum think that this storyline was the beginning of the end for this show.  I know that the 1897 episodes brought the show some of it's highest ratings and barely a year after that storyline ended the show was teetering on the brink of cancellation and was given the boot at the beginning of 1971.

I know that other very popular shows never recovered after introducing a storyline that their audience rejected.

I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks,

Murph
