If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #342 (1967) - Sam - 'That, uh - that MUST be the sheriff with the autopsy report.'

From "#0341/0342: Robservations 02/04/02: Au Revoir, Dr. Woodard"
Evans cottage - Patterson calls Sam to inform him that Dave died of a heart attack, per the coroner's report.
Maggie expresses relief, but Sam doesn't completely believe it.

This Robservations is also from the period where there's little detail. However, the except does reference the circumstances of the scene well and, of course, the quote comes up after the phone begins to ring and before Sam answers it...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #97 (1966) - Carolyn - 'Well, you MUST have had quite a time in Bangor.'

From "#0097/0098: Robservations 07/30/01: Is Vicki a Hanscomb?"
Carolyn and Roger sit on the steps, drinking their coffee. I think you have it all wrong about Vicki, he tells his niece, if she had such a special interest in Devlin, why would she call me to come and get her? That's exactly what I'd like to know, says Carolyn--didn't she tell you? No, he says, all I could get out of her was that possibly Burke was a little too drunk and she didn't want to drive home with him in that condition. Burke does get quite drunk at times, agrees Carolyn. There you are--that could be the solution, says Roger. If that had been the case, Vicki could have driven that car by herself! insists Carolyn. Not last night, he says--in that storm, we were lucky to get home with me driving. They stand. Uncle Roger, says Carolyn, you said that Burke had already left. Apparently, I didn't see him, says Roger. Then why didn't Vicki just stay at the hotel, asks Carolyn--why did she make you come all that distance in a storm? I may be an old fogy to you, because I'm your uncle, says Roger--but I'm not Vicki's uncle. (You just might be, Roger, and what are you implying?) You mean you and Vicki? asks Carolyn joyfully--oh, no, then she'd be my aunt! (That's good news?) Vicki exits the drawing room. Roger asks if the boss is available. I think so, she replies, and Roger goes in after first smiling conspiratorially at Carolyn. Vicki starts to head to the stairs, but Carolyn hoists herself up on the table and says, "Well, you must have had quite a time in Bangor." It was all right, says Vicki coolly. Do you really like my Uncle Roger? asks Carolyn. Yes, I think he's very nice, says Vicki. I think so, too, says Carolyn--he's very fond of you. Oh? asks Vicki.

This Robservations references the quote comes perfectly...

When it comes to Reply #2311, the post for April 1st's quote and screen capture, I was able to get access to the DVD of hoDS, so I've added an appropriate screen capture for the quote to the post. After I get access to my Blu-ray, I'll replace the DVD screen capture with one from the Blu-ray...

From '#0257/0258: Robservations 11/26/01: "Little Girl!"'
Blue Whale - Carolyn and Buzz dance while Buzz drinks. They decide to go someplace more rockin', and Carolyn leaves to powder her nose.

This Robservations falls in the period with little detail and the quote isn't referenced. However, the circumstances under which it's delivered are referenced...

When it comes to Reply #2311, the post for April 1st's quote and screen capture, I'm home for a brief time and I've been able to get the VHS and Blu-ray screen captures for Scene 142, so they've been added to the post. The excerpt from the script is still forthcoming...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #546 (1968) - Cassandra - 'Roger, you're keeping me from something I MUST do.'

From "Robservations 7/2/02 - Last-Ditch Efforts For Cass - #546/547"
Roger demands to speak to Cassandra, but she says there is something she must do. He demands she come upstairs with him, grabbing her. No, she isn't!--she doesn't care what he thinks of her. Roger asks when it DID matter, and she tells him he can figure that out by himself. She seems to be growing weaker as he tells her their marriage is a mistake--she isn't interested in him. She agrees with that, but says she must go. WHAT? He demands, but she says she doesn't have time and never had time for him. "Goodbye, Roger," she says, breaking free of him and racing to the door. He follows her, tells her he was willing to do anything for her--"I offered you my life so you could share it, but you weren't willing to share it, were you?" "No," she retorts. "Now you have learned the truth, there is nothing between us and there never has been!" Roger insists there was in the beginning. "I used you!" she spits at him. "Face it, I used you!" "For what?" demands Roger, angry and hurt.
She responds, "For what I'm going to do now." Roger closes the doors as she goes off into the night. The camera pans on Barnabas portrait.

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote correctly because where the quote actually comes up is where the Robservations indicates that Cassandra says she must go and before Roger demands to know what is so important to her...

However, the "MUST" line in the Robservations does indeed take place as indicated and will no doubt show up in a future installment of the slideshow...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #792 (1897) - Quentin - 'Suppose we come to some arrangement. I keep the hand until it does what it MUST, and then, then I'll give it to you, huh?'

From "Robservations 2/3/03 - #792/793 - Angelique Meets Aristede"
The flashily dressed man introduces himself to Quentin as Aristede.  He again demands the hand, but Quentin refuses.  Aristede points out, you were willing to kill your friend (Evan) just a minute ago for it, but you'll give it up eventually--I can be very persuasive and persistent.  You're not getting it, insists Quentin.  Aristede draws out a curvy knife--this was made by a Persian swordsmith a long time ago, he explains--he called her the Dancing Girl--isn't she beautiful?  He holds it up to Quentin, warning, when she dances for you, it's the dance of death, and I don't really want to hurt you.  Quentin asks, how did you know?--and how did you find me?  That's my business, says Aristede--to find and get what I need.  He refuses to tell Quentin why he needs the hand--just give it to me, he demands--and quickly, the Dancing Girl is getting restless.  Suppose we come to an arrangement, suggests Quentin--I'll keep the hand until it does what it must, then give it to you.  Aristede laughs--excuse me for being rude--there's no need for any deal as long as I have the Dancing Girl.  I need the hand!, insists Quentin  Find some other way out of your difficulties, advises Aristede--I hope you do--that faces doesn't suit you at all

The Robservations does a bit of paraphrasing of the quote but definitely gets all the main points across...

Hmmm - there seems to be a dispute as to when hoDS aired on Elvira's Movie Macabre. IMDb indicates it's the date I posted: July 14, 1985. But other sources say it was June 22, 1986.  [idontknow]

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #92 (1966) - Richard - 'You MUSTN'T think that Collinwood was always the way it is now. There was a time when it took a large staff to run the place.'

From "#0091/0092: Robservations 07/25/01: Garnering A Boyfriend"
Vicki unfolds the ledger sheet she found. Where did you get this? he asks, guarded. I found it in Collinwood, she says. I see, he says. It has your firm's name on it, says Vicki. One of our firm's old ledger sheets, obviously, says Garner--will you tell me why it interest you? Well, says Vicki, walking around to stand beside him, there is a name on it--right there, B. Hanscomb. This is a very old ledger sheet, he says, was it in a book? No, says Vicki, it was in a pile of papers in a box. Did you notice if the box had a date on it? asks Garner. I'm afraid I didn't, says Vicki. It would have helped, he says. Do you know her name? asks Vicki. HER name? asks Garner. I know that at one point, there was a girl named Betty Hanscomb who lived in Collinsport. In that case, I'm afraid I can't be of any help after all, he says, the only Hanscomb I recall is the Collins' butler. The butler? Asks Vicki. You mustn't think Collinwood was always the way it is now, says Garner--it once took a large staff to run the place. Do you remember his name? asks Vicki. I haven't the vaguest notion, says Garner, he was always called Hanscomb. It began with a B, points out Vicki. Yes, so I see, says Garner, but I don't think I can remember--Burt, Ben, Brad?--no, no use. What is that list of names and the amounts of money opposite? Asks Vicki, sitting back down. Seems to be an old monthly wage list of the employees at Collinwood, he says. Were there that many? Asks Vicki. A large staff, he says, two chauffeurs, three cooks, upstairs maid, butler, housekeeper, gardeners, handyman--and on special occasions, they'd bring in a dozen extras to help

The Robservations does some paraphrasing of the quote but definitely gets all the main points across...

And Ep #92 is this month's first example where Midnite serendipitously happened upon an ep that hadn't been quoted from before.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #162 (1967) - Dr. Guthrie - 'MUST have been a spectacular place in its day.'

From "#0162/0163: Robservations 09/13/01: Laura's Portrait Reappears"
Old House - Birds chirp. We focus on Josette's portrait and the cobweb-covered chandelier. David and Guthrie enter. This is it, says David. How old is this house? asks Guthrie, amazed. Hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of years old (an exaggeration), says David. Who lived here? asks Guthrie. My grandfather, says David--my great, great, great grandfather--his name was Jeremiah Collins--Josette was his wife. Must have been a spectacular place in its day, remarks Guthrie. I like it the way it is now, says David proudly--it's real spooky. Yeah, says Guthrie, I agree with you. Come on, I'll show you Josette Collins, says David, and leads him to the portrait--that's her painting. She was very beautiful, says the doctor

The Robservations references the quote perfectly...

And Ep #162 joins Ep #92 as another example this month of Midnite serendipitously happening upon an ep that hadn't been quoted from before.

And I wonder if somewhere online there's also an alternate 4X3 print of NoDS that may have been shown on TV somewhere? One of these days I'm definitely going to have to check...

I did a search, particularly of the site that hosts the Elvira's Movie Macabre version of hoDS, but all I came up with is several sites that feature the DVD/Blu-ray version of NoDS. Oh well. But who knows what I might come up with some other time?

Unfortunately, once I bought the VHS of NoDS, I taped over my over-the-air version (taped from one of the Turner showings) and I doubt I checked to see if it was any different than the VHS. If it was different, I'm sure I would have kept it. But who knew that, like hoDS, it might have been. And nowadays when hoDS or NoDS are shown on TV, it always seems to be the DVD/Blu-ray version...
