[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #614 (1968) - Mrs. Johnson - 'You MUST be out of your mind!'

From "Robservations 8/21/02 - Julia's Horrifying Discovery - #614/615"
Joe orders Mrs. Johnson to stay there--you don't know what Barnabas is like!--but she comes right over and tries to release his hold on the rope around Barnabas neck. Mrs. Johnson actually hits him, but he pushes her away and strangles Barnabas into unconsciousness. Nothing can stop me! screams Joe. Crying uncontrollably, Mrs. Johnson returns to the fray, screaming "Please!" over and over. Realizing what he's done, Joe loosens his hold on the rope and runs. Mrs. Johnson yells, They'll find you--I'll see to it!"

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote at all. However, after Joe says no one knows what Barnabas is really like, and Mrs. Johnson comes over, as she tries to release Joe's hold on the rope, she begs, "Let go of him! Let go!" And then she delivers the quote, followed by Joe insisting, "I'm not! I'm not. He's the reason."...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #347 (1967) - Vicki - 'I -- I -- I MUST have fallen asleep over my book and I -- I'm just not quite awake yet.'

From "#0347/0348: Robservations 02/07/02: Quick Treatment = Disaster"
When Barnabas comes to see Vicki a short while later, she seems to flinch in his presence, not wanting to be there with him. Vicki, uneasy, shows him the crystal Julia found--she wants the three of them to see if it matches the West Wing chandelier. Barnabas brings up her unpleasant association with Widows' Hill and suggests that they form some new, happy memories of the cliff. Why don't they watch the sunrise over Widows' Hill, that very morning?
Vicki doesn't answer at first, then says, sure, why not, dawn is her favorite time of day. Mine, too, says Barn

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote directly. However, after Vicki seems to flinvh, Barnabas asks Vicki, "What's the matter?" She replies, "Nothing," and then delivers the quote. Barnabas says he wouldn't want to disturb her if she tired, but Vicki asks him to please come in and sit down because she has something very special to tell him. She then explains about finding the crystal and wanting him to be a part of checking to see if it's a match for the chandelier in the foyer of the West Wing, however, she does not show Barnabas the crystal. In fact, the crystal is nowhere to be seen in the scene...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #179 (1967) - Caretaker - 'Not me. Them, you, you MUSTN'T trouble them.'

From "#0178/0179: Robservations 09/25/01: Tales From the Crypt"
Is there nothing I can say to you to convince you? asks Peter. The caretaker shakes his head. Joe and Peter move away from him. I'm afraid he means it, says Joe. What are we going to do? asks Peter. I guess we'd better get out of here. I can't do that, says Peter--we've got to get that coffin open somehow. Frank comes running in. I knew I'd find you here, he says--and what did you two think you were going to do? Isn't it obvious? asks Peter. And isn't it obvious what this could mean? demands Frank. The graves might rise, says the caretaker--the cries for help, the screams, the smoke! I'm sorry, Frank tells him, I apologize for my friends.  I know you, says the caretaker. Yes, I was here with a young lady, says Frank. With long black hair, recalls the caretaker. (only a few notes behind.) You were a great help, says Frank. I helped them--I stopped them, says the caretaker. I'm very grateful, says Frank, we won't trouble you anymore. Not me, says the caretaker, sweeping his hand toward the graves--them, you mustn't trouble them. We won't, promises Frank, then turns to the other two men--do you realize you could go to jail for this, and you, too, Joe?--there are ways of doing things, legal ways. Ways that take a long time, protests Peter.

The Robservations references the quote almost perfectly...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #100 (1966) - Burke - 'Roger was guilty of that manslaughter charge. Malloy MUST have found out.'

From "#0099/0100: Robservations 07/31/01: Pen-Man-Ship"
Would you please repeat that last statement? Asks Burke. I think Roger murdered Bill Malloy, says Vicki--or I should say I think it's very possible. Why? asks Burke. He had a motive if the things you say about that accident 10 years ago are true. They're true, all right, says Burke--Roger was guilty of that manslaughter charge--Malloy must have found out, Roger had to keep him quiet--but how do you know Roger was at Lookout Point that night? I found the pen he lost that night, says Vicki, it was on the beach at Lookout Point. A silver filigreed fountain pen, with a fancy design on it? asks Burke. Yes, says Vicki. That was my pen, says Burke, I gave it to Carolyn--Roger took it away from her and lost it. I know, says Vicki.

The Robservations references the quote perfectly...

And it's a hoot that today's quote coincides with the current ep in the Watching Project and the "Caption This!"/"Complete This Phrase / Fill In The Blank(s)" boards. I don't think that's ever happened before...

[spoiler]Yesterday's quote:
hoDS: Scene #187 (-1966: Ep #23) - Julia - 'It would be pointless now anyway. We MUST wait until we achieve total success.'

From DC's hoDS script:
187    INT:  DRAWING ROOM - OLD HOUSE - NIGHT             187

CLOSE SHOT of music box.  It is TINKLING OUT ITS TUNE.
PAN UP to Barnabas gazing at it fondly.  PULL BACK as
Julia enters from the foyer carrying her medical bag.
       Barnabas beams at her.

187    CONTD                                        CONTD 187

                             JULIA
I spoke to Professor Stokes today.
The fact that there have been no
                 attacks recently has almost  con-
vinced him that the vampire has
                 disappeared.  And the police have
                 lifted the curfew.

                             BARNABAS
Julia, I owe it all to you.  I
don't know how I shall ever be
                 able to thank you.

                             JULIA
It would be pointless now anyway.
We must wait until we achieve total
                 success.
                      (seeing the music box)
                 Where did you get that?

                                        He  picks   it
                             BARNABAS        up
It belonged to someone I knew
                 many years ago.

       Julia listens and is enthralled.

                             JULIA
                  It's very beautiful.

                             BARNABAS
                      (he smiles at her)
I intend to give it to someone
soon -- someone I love very much.

CAMERA TRUCKS in on Julia.   She is speechless -- and CU J
       hopeful.

And Julia delivers the line exactly as scripted...

And similar to hoDS, I used a screen capture from the Laser Disc for NoDS -

- so that it would be in keeping with the dimensions of the screen captures from the original show, but this is what the Blu-ray looks like -

And just a reminder, we've seen notations like "hoDS: Scene #187 (-1966: Ep #23)" before and in this case it means that the quote should have come from 1966's Ep #23 but that ep doesn't have any "must" lines to quote from. So, with that in mind, it means that Ep #23 now joins Eps #1, #5, #8, #12, #13, #22, #120, #124, #136, #138, #139, #141, #189, #198, #210, #217, #219, #223, #478, #659, #667, #690, #904 and #1008 as ones without any "must" lines.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #1199 (1841PT[-1967: Ep #237]) - Julia - 'Morgan, until the lottery is over you MUST have nothing to do with Catherine.'

From  "#1199/1200: Robservations 12/09/03: The Woman in White"
Morgan! cries Julia, you cannot marry Catherine tonight, tomorrow--if Justin lives for a week and you marry Catherine, then when Justin dies, Catherine will be part of the lottery!  No! he cries.  She will, it happens to all of us! insists Julia.  No, I won't have it--there will be no women! he says.  There always have been! Julia reminds him.  There won't be this time, says Morgan--I've discussed it with Quentin and he agrees.  Does Gabriel? she asks.  He will, Morgan assures her.  I think not, says Julia--you must not tamper with tradition.  You sound as if it's an honor instead of a curse, he says.  I'm just being realistic, she says.  So am I, says Morgan--I know six Collins have gone to that room and spent the night--three were found dead in the morning, and three were found like Father--mad for the rest of their lives--I am realistic, too, about one thing--that either Quentin, Gabriel or I will be on that list.  Do you think you or I can decide who will or will not be in the lottery? she asks--when your father dies, and you read that letter, it will tell us
--until the lottery is over, you must have nothing to do with Catherine, do you understand?  I can't! he says.

The Robservations references the quote almost perfectly...

And again, just a reminder, we've seen notations like "(1841PT[-1967])" before and know it means that an 1841PT quote has been substituted for what should have been a 1967 quote. But this time around "(1841PT[-1967: Ep #237])" means all that plus that the quote should have come from 1967's Ep #237 but that ep doesn't have any "must" lines to quote from. So, with that in mind, it means that Ep #237 now joins Eps #1, #5, #8, #12, #13, #22, #23, #120, #124, #136, #138, #139, #141, #189, #198, #210, #217, #219, #223, #478, #659, #667, #690, #904 and #1008 as ones without any "must" lines. And Ep #237 is the last ep to come up this month that doesn't have any "must" lines.

(And once again, I've been busy with other stuff this month so I haven't already picked out the eps for my upcoming month, which will be April,  so at this point I have no idea just how many eps could come up without "must" lines...)

Ep #541 (1968) - Cassandra - 'David, I'm your mother now, and you MUST obey me.'

From "Robservations 6/27/02 - #540/541 - A Revelation for Cassandra"
Cass admires her restored hand. David comes in--he wants his tape recorder, then he'll go to bed. She says he can't take it, but he insists it's his. She doesn't want him listening to it half the night, she's his mother and he can have the recorder back in the morning. He says she's acting strangely--she screamed at him and scared him by the way she looked at him earlier.
She apologizes for scaring him and asks his forgiveness. He accuses her of understanding what's on the tape, but she denies it. He said she got excited after listening to the tape, but she claims she was puzzled. She believes it doesn't mean a thing, and touches David on the shoulder. He notices the missing bandage, and she says her burn wasn't as serious as she thought. He heads upstairs, giving her a weird look

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote directly and mostly not at all, but it does reference where in the scene the quote comes up...

From "Robservations 1/30/03 - #788-789 - Quentin Gets a Break, Gaslighting Judith"
Trask comes in--where have you been for the past 24 hours, he asks Evan. We had better decide what to do about your new wife, advises Evan, and quickly--for some reason, she imagined herself your first wife, and accused me of being responsible for her death! Is this a macabre joke? Asks Trask. No, replies Evan says--she was like someone possessed--she seems to have recovered for the moment, but if this manifests itself again, we could be in serious trouble--REVEREND. Is possession by Minerva possible? asks Trask. Yes, says Evan, that Minerva's spirit is restless shouldn't come as a surprise to either of us. If the spirit is a danger to us, it must be silenced, says Trask. It's a ghost that won't rest until it causes trouble for us, warns Evan. There must be a way, says Trask--find out what it is. Evan is thinking wicked thoughts--fear, he says, even though Minerva is dead, Judith still has an enormous fear of her--perhaps we can use that fear to our advantage--by bringing Trask's first wife back to haunt Judith.

From "Robservations 3/25/03 - #862-863 - Quentin Asks For Evan's Help"
Jeremiah's ghost steps close to Kitty and raises his hand. "You must leave this place," he says, "leave Collinwood and never return. If you stay, he will kill you!"
Kitty looks at the spirit in horror.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #605 (1968) - Nicholas - 'You know, I have an affinity for the past myself. I really MUST discuss it with him sometime.'

From "Robservations 8/14/02 #604/605 - Biting Into an Old Flame"
They sit, drink. Stokes finds the sherry interesting. He invites Nicholas to Barnabas' dinner party that evening at the Old House. Nicholas ponders this, and Stokes explains it is spur of the moment plan.
Nicholas has no other plans this evening, and Stokes notices his indecisiveness. I'm puzzled, says Nicholas--Barnabas and I don't know each other well, and I feel he doesn't really like me, either. Stokes says not to worry, he got the same impression from Barn, but they've become good friends. What promoted the invitation now? asks Nicholas. Stokes professes not to know. Nicholas asks why Barnabas sent Stokes rather than phoning. Because Barnabas is eccentric and refuses to get a phone, says Stokes--dine by candlelight, because he has no electricity. Blair finds this fascinating, and Stokes calls Barnabas "unusual". Nicholas says he has an affinity for the past himself and admires this in Barnabas--perhaps he'll discuss it with him sometime. Stokes says it's a touchy subject with Barnabas, so discussion isn't a good idea.

The Robservations mixes things up a bit when it comes to how the quote is delivered because Nicholas says he's beginning to admire Barnabas before he says he has an affinity for the past, not to mention in getting into the quote it uses "perhaps" rather than "must," which is a very different intent, as well as a shameful lack of acknowledging the use of "must"...

From "#0343/0344: Robservations 02/05/02: David's Awful Premonition"
Concerned, Liz tells Carolyn and Vicki about David's strange reaction. Carolyn volunteers to bring up her cousin's lunch

The Robservations falls into the period where there's little detail and the quote isn't reference at all. However, how it comes up is that after having just talked to him about Woodard's death in the previous scene, Liz tells Carolyn and Vicki that she can't tell them what David is like, but it's frightening. Carolyn asks if he was terribly upset, and Liz says that's just it, he seemed to have known about it. Vicki wonders who could have told him. Liz doesn't know, he probably heard them talking, but what worries her is that he had almost no reaction. Carolyn thinks he just hasn't found a way of showing it. And after that is when the quote comes up, followed by Carolyn volunteering to take David's lunch up to him...

Ep #88 (1966) - Roger - 'All right, suppose that he did all of this deliberately and intended to come back and get Vicki out. Now, by the enormity of what he had done, it MUST have scared him off and he said nothing.'

From "#0087/0088: Robservations 07/23/01: Maggie and Mainsails; Hope of Rescue"
Liz looks around, spots David's toys, and asks what all these things are doing here? I can't imagine, says Roger. One of David's drawings, his toy, his books, says Liz--David's been in this room before--he brought Vicki here deliberately! All right, says Roger, suppose he did all of this deliberately, and intended to come get Vicki out--now, by the enormity of what he'd done, it must have scared him off and he said nothing. Poor Vicki, remarks Liz, and Roger echoes her sentiments--he's done a very dangerous thing, and if I know David, he's going to twist it so it seems to be Vicki's fault. Is that why you're afraid for her? asks Liz. Yes, he says, I suppose it's a horrible thing for a father to say about his son, but I think David is an incipient psychopath--there's no telling what he might or might not do. And that's why you think she must leave? asks Liz. To be perfectly candid, yes, says Roger. Liz walks across the room and asks Roger if Vicki's claim that she saw Bill Malloy's ghost have any effect on his decision. Why should it? he asks--anyway, it's utter nonsense--when I found her, she was babbling and I saw nothing at all to substantiate what she said. Then you didn't look very closely, says Liz--she points to the floor, where the seaweed sits in a pile. She picks up a piece and says it's just as she described it--wet seaweed.
Roger gazes at it, his face twisted with disbelief.

The Robservations references the quote perfectly...

One of the great early supernatural scenes...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Carolyn - 'You MUST have the most generous nature I've ever heard of') was back on January 1st.

Ep #161 (1967) - Carolyn - 'Uncle Roger, I don't want to fight with you. But you MUST respect my wishes when it comes to the running of this house.'

From "#0160/0161: Robservations 09/12/01: Calling Dr. Peter Guthrie"
Drawing room - I think the time has come for me to tell you exactly where you stand, says Carolyn. I think my dear nice is about to deliver a speech, says Roger, frowning. A brief one, and to the point, she says--the reason Dr. Guthrie will stay on here, despite your rumblings. Crossing his arms over his chest, Roger tells her he should be very glad to hear it. My mother is in a hospital bed in Boston, begins Carolyn, right now, she's the most important thing in the world to me--she's placed a very heavy burden on me--she's left the entire responsibility of the entire Collins family to me--not to you. And now you are drunk with power? he asks. No, this is what she planned in case anything happened to her, says Carolyn, and I intend to see it through. How do you intend to force whatever little policies you devise? he asks. (nasty!) Mother left a specific document with the attorneys, says Carolyn, that will advise and support me whenever necessary--please, Uncle Roger, don't make it necessary. I see, he says--and exactly where does that leave me? Life won't change for you, she assures him, you'll continue to be what you've always been--I don't want to fight with you, but you must respect my wishes when it comes to the running of this house!--she sighs--her instructions about the business were quite clear, too--hesitantly, she adds--with everyone's help, I'm to be in charge until she gets back--now if you'll excuse me--and she takes down her coat and slips it on. Roger follows her.

The Robservations references the quote almost perfectly...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Roger - 'Your mother MUST have been out of her mind! Leaving a half-grown girl with such enormous responsibilities') was back on October 12th of 2020.

[spoiler]Yesterday's quote:
Ep #266 (1967) - Jason - 'I MUST say your attitude pleases me very much, and, uh, it also has me a bit puzzled.'

From "#0265/0266: Robservations 11/30/01: Sea, Grave; Grave, Sea"
Down in the foyer, Liz, ready to go out in coat and scarf, is stopped by Jason, who wishes to discuss wedding arrangements. Liz mechanically agrees with all his suggestions. Jason wants the wedding held in Collinwood's drawing room, with the town's most prominent judge doing the honors, with a big reception following,
He's puzzled by how agreeable she is, but all she wants to do is go for a walk. As she leaves, Jason grins.

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote directly because this ep is also in the period where there's little detail. However, the circumstances under which the quote comes up is addressed...

And Ep #266 is this month's first example where Midnite serendipitously happened upon an ep that hadn't been quoted from before. (It's also the only "must" line in the ep.)

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #410 (1796) - Angelique - 'Barnabas... Barnabas will come to life again at night-- this night and every night throughout eternity. Yes, Ben, that was my curse. I hated him at that moment. I thought he had killed me. He is one of the living dead. I cannot bear to think of what he... he will do terrible things. Ben, more terrible than I would ever wish on anyone. I MUST stop him. And the only way is to drive this into his heart.'

From "#0409/0410: Robservations 03/22/02: The "V" Word is Spoken"
Ben brings Angelique the stake. She orders him to have a carriage waiting for her by nightfall. She won't tell him anymore, but nervously notes how dark it is with the storm outside.  Upstairs, as she packs, Ben demands to know how Barnabas died. He was bitten by a bat, says Ang, she didn't want him to die, but he'd shot her, and she thought SHE was going to die! Did Ben tell Barnabas about her, she asks? He never said a word, Ben replies (ironically). Barnabas will ris at nightfall, she explains, and every night thereafter. As one of the living dead, he'll do terrible things, worse than she'd wish on anyone! The stake Ben made must be driven into his heart, says Angelique.

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote directly, paraphrases much of it, and even leaves out the "MUST" part - SHAMEFUL!! It also uses a "must" that isn't actually used...

And this is the fourth quote from this ep. The first (Angelique - 'You MUST come to me. At once, Ben. At once!') was back on May 25th of 2021, the second (Angelique - 'You MUST treat him as your son would wish') was back on May 25th of 2022, and the third (Josette - 'I have promised someone I MUST stay') was back on January 4th. So all that means that Ep #410 has joined the club with Eps #2, #3, #42, #44, #50, #52, #54, #66, #106, #119, #133, #158, #195, #208, #211, #212, #296, #300, #308, #315, #340, #365, #367, #377, #384, #405, #426, #449, #450, #462, #466, #479, #481, #503, #506, #518, #528, #534, #543, #544, #550, #608, #609, #629, #639, #643, #644, #646, #647, #651, #655, #678, #709, #717, #727, #734, #742, #743, #746, #750, #763, #764, #883, #884, #886, #889, #915, #975, #976, #977, #993, #1006, #1011, #1014, #1057, #1064, #1081, #1111, #1125, #1126, #1127, #1128, #1197, #1199, #1206, #1218 and #1232.
