If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #532_533 (1968) - Barnabas - 'You may be tempted to interrupt me. Please, you MUST not do that.'

From  "Robservation 6/21/02 - #531/532_533 - Barnabas Offers Himself"
He says if she leaves, she'll regret it--he's going to say something she's wanted to hear for a long time. She probably knows Vicki has had the dream, but she doesn't realize that her strength of character and feelings for Barnabas won't allow her to tell him--she'll just continue suffering day and night, and he won't allow it. "I am willing to submit to you. It is I you have always wanted. You may have me. I give you my solemn word that I will always try to be what I was to you in the beginning in Martinique. If you stop Vicki's suffering, I will do everything in my power to love you and to be faithful to you for all time." She turns away, probably not daring to hope he means what he said. When you've reached a decision, he says, you can find me at the Old House.
He leaves the room. Cassangelique slowly turns back around, her eyes bright with tears and a happy/sad grin on her face. "Could you ever really love me, Barnabas? I wish I could believe that. You don't know how much I wish I could believe that!"

The Robservations doesn't address the quote at all, though it does address the circumstances that lead up to it and follow it. The way the quote comes up is that after Barnabas says that what he has to say to "Cassandra" is something she's wanted to hear for a long time, she counters she hasn't known him for a long time. He asks her to pretend that she has. And when she accuses him of playing games, he insists she will find out soon enough that it isn't a game. To that "Cassandra" agrees to humor him, and it is after that that Barnabas delivers the quote. He then asks for a chance to speak and says afterward he will leave quietly. He follows that by saying that she probably knows that Vicki has had the dream...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #652_653 (1968) - Joe - 'Amy, you MUST be imagining that.'

From  "Robservations 9/18/02 - #651-652/3 - Liz & Death; Joe vs. Werewolf"
Joe stays downstairs and talks to Amy. He tells her he's talked to Chris, who promised to spend more time with her. Her smile turns to a look of shock when she sees the red pentagram again appear on Joe's face. Suddenly fearing for Joe's safety, and begs him not to leave Collinwood this night.

Another Robservations that doesn't reference the quote at all. However, the way it comes up is that after Amy's face displays the shock of seeing the pentagram on Joe's face again, Joe asks her what's the matter. Amy explains that she saw the star on his face again - it was there for just a second and then it went away. And after that is when Joe delivers the quote, but Amy insists it was there. Joe doesn't understand, if it's there, why can't he ever see it? Amy doesn't know, and she wishes he didn't have to go back into town...

Now Joe has 21 quotes in the slideshow.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #778 (1897) - Pansy - 'There is one answer we seek tonight and it MUST be found. I need a volunteer. You, sir?'

From  "Robservations 1/23/03 - #778-779 - One Hand Clapping"
We hear applause, see PANSY FAYE in glitter.  She stands onstage and says, "There is one answer we seek tonight, and it must be found.  She asks for a volunteer, and points to Barnabas, who shakes his head, no.  She asks Judith to come up, not to be afraid, give her a hand! she calls.  She instructs Judith to concentrate on the answer, which will come slowly, but it will come.  Judith says she can't concentrate on the answer without knowing the question. .

The Robservations directly references only part of the quote, but at least it does mention the other important part...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding Wednesday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Wednesday's quote:
Ep #919_920_921 (1970) - Tate - 'You MUST.'

From  "Robservations 5/1/03 - #918-921 - Tate Gets Ahead of the Game"
The full moon has risen when Tate puts finishing touches on Chris' portrait.  Chris is in pain already when Tate announces, "It's done--take it and get out of here!"  Chris moans.  What's the matter with you? asks Tate. Chris rises from the chair--the pain has already begun, he gasps. Take your painting and get out of here, says Tate.  I can't go! Chris shouts--I can't even move!  You must, says Tate, you must! Get away from me, cries Chris, don't you understand, it didn't work! I told you it wouldn't, says Tate--don't blame me for that, I did what you asked, what you could. Chris lies writhing on the floor.  I can't stay here with you now, says Tate. "I can't do anything," moans Chris, transforming. Tate, locked in with the werewolf, tries fruitlessly to get out.
The animal growls.  Grant comes to the door, hears Tate's scream of agony, and tries to get in.

The Robservations references the quote perfectly...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding Thursday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Thursday's quote:
Ep #1018 (1970PT) - Quentin - 'Well now, she MUST have had some explanation.'

From  "#1018/1019: Robservations 07/14/03: Framing Maggie; Another Victim Needed"
You want me to dismiss Hoffman? asks Quentin. Yes, says Maggie. Why, what happened while I was at the hospital? he asks. I was asleep, explains Maggie, and awakened to find Hoffman in the room--I don't know what she was doing there. She must have had some explanation, he says. She SAID she heard someone in our room and was afraid it was a prowler, says Maggie.   That doesn't sound too implausible, says Quentin. I just don't believe it, Maggie says--I'm sure she was there for some other reason. What other reason? Quentin asks. I don't know, admits Maggie, I just know there's something very frightening about that woman, and she's tried to get me out of the house ever since I arrived. (She sounds defensive again.) You've got to stop letting Hoffman disturb you, insists Quentin, you've got to be firm with her.  I've tried that, says Maggie--it doesn't work. Quentin takes her hands--I don't know what to say, Maggie--I can't fire someone for walking into a room. But I'm sure she was there for some other reason, insists Maggie. Now listen, says Quentin, sounding like the husband of old, I know Hoffman is hard to get to know, but she's been a family fixture here for years.

The Robservations references the quote almost perfectly...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding Friday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Friday's quote:
Ep #1085 (1970) - Julia - 'The staircase MUST be someplace. I was on it myself.'

From  "#1084/1085: Robservations 08/28/03: Beckoned"
Another bedroom, points out Quentin, like so many of the others. I wonder whose room it was, says Julia. Perhaps there are more plans we haven't gone through downstairs, says Q--why not go back and look?  We're looking for a stairway...time, says Julia. If you're going to go rummaging around through every room in this house, we might as well forget about the staircase, advises Quentin, taking her arm. One of his hands is shaking. I'm sorry, she says--yes, we can check for other plans, the staircase must be someplace, I was on it myself.

The Robservations references the quote perfectly...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding Saturday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Saturday's quote:
Ep #1143 (1840) - Samantha - 'Yes, these things MUST be done.'

From  "#1142/1143: Robservations 10/27/03: Julia in Jeopardy--Bigtime!"
Julia enters the room--I'm sorry for interrupting, she says.  It's quite all right, says Randall--please do come in.  I'd like to know about the schedule tomorrow, if you feel up to talking about the funeral, says Julia.  Yes, says Sam, these things must be done.  Valerie comes in and overhears Samantha telling Julia, we will be leaving the house shortly before one o'clock--you will be in the carriage with Gabriel and Edith--the ceremony at the cemetery will begin promptly at one-thirty.  Valerie quietly goes upstairs, unseen.  It will be very brief, says Samantha, as I feel that's the way she would have wanted it--Reverend Stone will give the eulogy--Lamar Trask insisted on that honor--it gave me great pleasure to turn him down.  (She says this last with great hatred.)

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding Sunday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Sunday's quote:
Ep #1219(no video) (1841PT) - Bramwell - 'Yes, since she is mistress of the family, Daphne and I felt that she MUST know.'

From  "#1218/1219: Robservations 12/22/03: Unfortunate Timing"
Collinwood - The next day - Morgan answers the door to Bramwell and Daphne.  What do you want? asks Morgan.  To see Flora, says Bramwell, may we come in?--she is in, isn't she?.  Yes, may I ask what you want with her? asks Morgan.  Since she is the mistress of the family, says Bramwell, Daphne and I felt that she should know.  Know what? asks Morgan.  "That Daphne and I are now man and wife," announces Bramwell proudly.  Catherine overhears and promptly faints.

When it comes to the quote, the Robservations does a small bit of paraphrasing, but it gets the points across quite well...

And of course there was no screen capture for this quote in the slideshow because we don't have the video of Ep #1219. However, the recreation with the audio uses the following screen capture taken from a surrounding ep to represent Bramwell as he delivers the line:

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding Monday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Monday's quote:
Ep #90 (1966) - Vicki - 'I MUST admit, though, it doesn't look quite as bad in daylight.'

From  "#0089/0090: Robservations 07/24/01: Should I Stay or Should I go?"
Carolyn looks around what was Vicki's prison. This is where you were? she asks. Vicki nods, and says she must admit, it doesn't look so bad in daylight. Glancing around, Carolyn says it's horrible in any kind of light--I'd have just died! I almost did, says Vicki--when that candle went out, and there was no more light in here, I thought it was the end--I finally fell asleep from exhaustion. If you fell asleep, says Carolyn, everything else might be something you dreamed. Oh, no, says Vicki, the storm woke me up--I remember being awake--I remember the thunder, the lightning, and Mr. Malloy standing right there. Carolyn goes over to the spot. Right here? she asks. Vicki nods--he was dripping with seaweed, she says.

And once again when it comes to a quote, the Robservations does a small bit of paraphrasing, but it gets the points across quite well...

And as with Ep #88 and #264 earlier this month, Ep #90 is another example where Midnite serendipitously happened upon an ep that hadn't been quoted from before.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding Tuesday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Tuesday's quote:
Ep #265 (1967) - Julia - 'I MUST warn you, however, that it could prove quite painful, both to you and to your daughter.'

From  "#0265/0266: Robservations 11/30/01: Sea, Grave; Grave, Sea"
In Julia's office, Dave tries to convince her to allow Sam and Joe to see Maggie. She's angry that they're there at all. Julia asks to see the two men, and when they enter her office, says that he wants to see Maggie. She warns them it might be painful, indicating that she's allowing the visit partly to see the effect it has on Maggie. She gives instructions for Maggie to be brought in, then walks over to the fish tank, in effect showing her disinterest in them. Joe and Sam exit. Dave asks her what is going to happen. It will be a disaster, she assures him, but perhaps it will stop their meddling.

Again we hit upon a Robservations with less detail than there will be and so the quote isn't directly referenced. However, at least in this one there's a good indication of when and how part of it comes up...

And as with Eps #88, #264 and #90 earlier this month, Ep #265 is another example where Midnite serendipitously happened upon an ep that hadn't been quoted from before.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #411 (1796) - Ben - 'Mr. Barnabas, you MUSTN'T talk like that.'

From  "#0411/0412: Robservations 03/25/02: Barnabas Rises--and Kills"
Ben notes with concern that Barnabas' mouth and clothes are stained with blood--is he all right? Yes, I am, says Barnabas sorrowfully, but I attacked some poor villager. He realizes he needs human blood to survive, and painfully says there will be talk of an attack in the village the next day. The marks will make it look like the attack of a wild animal, but I am the guilty one. . .I needed blood!
Ben covers his face, tortured, trying to comprehend. Barnabas miserably wishes he'd let Angelique kill him--he'd rather be dead than go through eternity as what he's become. . ..

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote at all. However, Ben delivers it after Barnabas says that he should have let Angelique kill him...

And you've no doubt noticed that it isn't Ben who appears in today's screen capture. That's because Ben delivers the quote while he's off screen and it's Barnabas who's on screen, which is why today's screen capture features Barnabas -

- rather than Ben. And as I've explained before normally we would just skip a quote if the character saying it isn't on screen. However, in this instance Midnite really liked the shot of Barnabas that's on screen when Ben delivers the quote, so she chose to use it rather than one of the others from Ep #411 where the character delivering the quote is on screen. But there's certainly a chances that some, if not all of those unused options will show up in the slideshow sooner or later...

You'll also note that once again a screen capture has red bars on the left and right sides of it. And that's because it's something that we're using to further indicate that a character other than the character delivering the quote is on screen.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #534 (1968) - Barnabas - 'I can no longer bear to, to think of, of what Vicki is going through for me. I MUST put a stop to it.'

From  "Robservations 6/24/02 - #534/535 - The Point of Return?"
Barnabas says there's no way out, but Julia refuses to believe this. He went to see Cassandra, he tells the horrified Julia, and asked her to release Vicki from the dream's effects. In return for WHAT? asks Julia, already knowing. I was willing to admit defeat and restore our relationship of long ago, he says. Julia can't believe he was serious in this offer, and he explains he told her he'd wait at the Old House for her answer, but there was none. If Cassandra wasn't willing to respond to that, there's nothing else, and he can't bear contemplating what Vicki is going through for him. (Does he have any clue what JULIA is going through for him?)
Julia begs him to think it over, and he says, firmly, he has thought about it and is prepared to accept it. He leaves, and Julia stares after him, in despair. A very nice scene between these two.)

And again a Robservations paraphrases a quote and gets most of the points across...

And presumably there should be an opening parenthesis before the word "A" in the last line in the above excerpt, as in "(A very nice scene between these two.)", but there isn't.

And this is the fourth quote from this ep. The first (Barnabas - 'It's in her nature to love and not destroy. Well there MUST be something in my nature that's like that too-- that... that is worthy of what she's doing for me. And that's why I cannot let it go on, Julia') was back on July 16th of 2021, the second (Carolyn - 'If Prof. Stokes was willing to take you in and try to teach you, then he MUST understand you. He MUST realize that when you ran from his house, it was out of fear, and that means he isn't angry') was back on August 2nd of 2022, and the third (Carolyn - 'You MUST believe that and let me go now') was back on October 16th of 2023. So all that means that Ep #534 has joined the club with Eps #2, #3, #42, #44, #50, #52, #54, #66, #106, #119, #133, #158, #195, #208, #211, #212, #296, #300, #308, #315, #340, #365, #367, #377, #384, #405, #426, #449, #450, #462, #466, #479, #481, #503, #506, #518, #528, #543, #544, #550, #608, #609, #629, #639, #643, #644, #646, #647, #651, #655, #678, #709, #717, #727, #734, #742, #743, #746, #750, #763, #764, #883, #884, #886, #889, #915, #975, #976, #977, #993, #1006, #1011, #1014, #1057, #1064, #1081, #1111, #1125, #1126, #1127, #1128, #1197, #1199, #1206, #1218 and #1232. However, not only recall that Eps #42, #44, #52, #66, #133, #208, #211, #300, #367, #377, #384, #449, #466, #550, #609, #629, #639, #646, #678, #709, #727, #734, #742, #746, #915, #977, #993, #1057, #1111, #1197 & #1218 have five quotes, but Eps #66, #377, #384, #449, #646, #727, #915 & #993 have six quotes.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #780 (1897) - Gregory - 'MUST we listen to that?'

From  "Robservations 1/24/03 - #780-781 - Senseless Death; Barnabas in Dutch"
Morose, Quentin listens to his music in the drawing room.  He ignores the knock at the door, turning up the volume.  Trask enters and suggests that Quentin should play reverent hymns (as IF!).  This is MY hymn, says Quentin, grinning, calling him "Mr." Trask. The Reverend asks him to turn off the music.  Does it lead you into some unknown temptation--REVEREND--dancing, beautiful women in low-cut gowns, whispered laughter? taunts Quentin.  Trask soberly says, I've come to see Judith.  Then you'll have to wait, says Quentin; I can't keep you company, I have a meeting at dusk.  He leaves him the record playing, and suggests Trask "imagine" to his heart's content.

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote, though it does reference circumstances surrounding it. The quote comes up after Quentin says the music is his hymn and before Quentin asks if its rhythm leads Trask into some unknown temptation. The quote doesn't ask that the music be turned off, nor does Trask ask that it be in other dialogue, so in that respect what the Robservations summary indicates is misleading...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #923 (1970) - Julia - 'A View of South Wales. Somewhere in this room there MUST be an answer to this. But where? Where?'

From  "Robservations 5/2/03 - #922/923 - Death Comes For Amanda; Mrs. Sky Rumson"
Julia searches Tate's home, looking for papers. She sits and reads, concentrating on what she's found, for a long time. She continues to flip through Tate's paperwork, and finds a batch of form letters, all signed by Harrison Monroe. One reads, "Sir, for many years I've been trying to find a large Tate canvas which disappeared following a fire at the turn of the century." Just before the fire in his studio, realizes Julia--he painted over Quentin's portrait! She continues reading, "The painting was titled, a View of South Wales. It is of paramount importance that I find the painting. Would you kindly check your records and see if your gallery has had the painting at any time--if so, would you kindly advise me who the purchaser was--money is no object, I must have the painting to complete my Charles Delaware Tate collection.  Very truly yours, Harrison Monroe." A View of South Wales, repeats Julia. Somewhere in this room there must be answer to this--where? Where? She continues her search.

The Robservations drops a couple words from the quote but references it close to perfectly otherwise...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #1019 (1970PT) - Angelexis - 'It's happening to me. I feel cold all over. You remember that I told you I MUST have warmth to survive.'

From "#1018/1019: Robservations 07/14/03: Framing Maggie; Another Victim Needed"
7:00 - Angelique, wrapped in a shawl, races downstairs, calling frantically for Hoffman--what's keeping you? she cries. She enters the drawing room and tries to warm her hands by the fire. Hoffman joins her. "Where have you been? I've been calling you!" demands Angelique accusingly.
