Yesterday I forgot to post that while the show always seemed to dress Prof. Stokes in sartorial splendor, I was quite surprised when they dressed him in such a bright green shirt in Ep #1084. Stokes often wore brightly colored bow ties but rarely if ever again such a bright shirt:

Not that it looks bad. Not at all. Actually, the shirt goes really well with the bow tie. But the bright green just seems somehow out of character for Stokes. But hey, maybe he'd spied once too often on the people in 1970PT and was influenced to try out something like their fashion choices, if only once.  [hall2_wink] [hall2_grin]

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #1139 (1840) - Barnabas - 'We MUST put her to her final rest and spare her the misery of the living dead.'

From  "#1138/1139: Robservations 10/23/03: Stick Domesticity"
Collinwood drawing room - Roxanne, dead? Barnabas asks Julia, I had hoped that Angelique would understand, but of course I was a fool to think she would--if there was only some way to destroy that woman!  You know that's not possible, says Julia--the thing to worry about is the aftermath--after Roxanne is buried she will rise.  Yes, says Barnabas sorrowfully, and live a life of darkness.  Unless we do something to prevent that, says Julia.  We must put her to her final rest, agrees Barnabas, and spare her the misery of the living dead.  It's almost dawn, says Barnabas, there's no time to make plans now--meet me at dusk, then we'll decide what to do.

The Robservations references the quote perfectly...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Barnabas - 'Roxanne, you MUST stop') was back on September 20th.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #158 (1967) - Liz - 'I know there's something I MUST remember.'

From  "#0158/0159: Robservations 09/11/01: Liz Loses All Her Marbles"
I won't let you have David, warns Liz, no matter what happens to me--I won't let you!--there's something about you that...I don't know what it is--but I don't know--this...I know there's something I must remember. but you can't remember, can you? asks Laura. It's so close to remembering, I can almost grasp it! says Liz. You might never remember that image that's glimmering in your mind, says Laura. I will! Says Liz. Some things are best forgotten, best left unspoken, says Laura. I have to remember! gasps Liz, I know it's important! You must forget, insists Laura. No, I'll remember, says Liz.
Memories are very hazy, says Laura. Everything seems to be fading, says Liz. Memories are elusive, disappearing into the fog, says Laura, in a hypnotizing voice--a fog that envelops everything! What's happening to me, says Liz, sinking to the pillows. Time is stopping for you, says Laura, coming to a halt--not future, no past--only the nothingness of being in limbo. Liz, eyes wide, stares at Laura.

The Robservations references the quote perfectly...

And this is the fourth quote from this ep. The first (Dr. Reeves - 'It MUST be done - and quickly!') was back on December 18th of 2020, the second (Laura - 'You MUST forget'), from this same scene, was back on February 24th of 2022, and the third (Liz - 'But if I MUST go, Carolyn, remember, that you and you alone are in charge') was back on February 21st. So all that means that Ep #158 has joined the club with Eps #2, #3, #42, #44, #50, #52, #54, #66, #106, #119, #133, #195, #208, #211, #212, #296, #300, #308, #315, #340, #365, #367, #377, #384, #405, #426, #449, #450, #462, #466, #479, #481, #503, #506, #518, #543, #544, #550, #608, #609, #629, #639, #643, #644, #646, #647, #651, #655, #678, #709, #717, #727, #734, #742, #743, #746, #750, #763, #764, #883, #884, #886, #889, #915, #975, #976, #977, #993, #1006, #1011, #1014, #1057, #1064, #1081, #1111, #1125, #1126, #1127, #1128, #1197, #1199, #1206, #1218 and #1232. However, not only recall that Eps #42, #44, #52, #66, #133, #208, #211, #300, #367, #377, #384, #449, #466, #550, #609, #629, #639, #646, #678, #709, #727, #734, #742, #746, #915, #977, #993, #1057, #1111, & #1197 have five quotes, but Eps #66, #377, #384, #449, #646, #727, #915 & #993 have six quotes.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #1217 (1841PT) - Morgan - 'I keep wishing this night were over. But tomorrow will be no better because tomorrow we MUST hold that lottery again.'

From  "#1216/1217: Robservations 12/19/03: A Shocking Announcement"
Nearly 7 PM - Drawing room - Morgan, we shouldn't have let Daphne go, says Catherine.  Darling, says Morgan, we sent a servant to take Daphne back to the Old House--he'll stay with her until she comes back--then he'll take her home--we've done everything we can for her!  (I don't like his attitude at all!)  Catherine apologizes.  I keep wishing this night were over, he says, but tomorrow will be no better, because we will have to hold that lottery again!  Morgan! cries Catherine, sorry for him.  And tomorrow night, he says, another Collins will be in that locked room.  Don't think about it, she says.  What else can I think about? he asks

The Robservations references the quote perfectly...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Catherine - 'Morgan, you MUST tell her, now') was back on June 12th.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #85 (1966) - Liz - 'I MUST say, you are acting like a child, and I'm ashamed of you.'

From  "#0085/0086: Robservations 07/20/01: What Do You Say to a Dripping Sailor?"
I was all ready to go out with Joe, says Carolyn, I apologized to him, practically begged him to forgive me for what I'd said to him--he let me go through the whole speech, before he told me he had another date for tonight--I'm not about to sit here and look at these walls while Joe's having a ball with some other girl. What kind of nonsense is this? asks Liz. I'm going to get my raincoat! insists Carolyn, turning away. Carolyn! says Liz sternly--come back here this instant. Carolyn does so. What's this about Joe and another girl? asks Liz. He's having dinner with some other girl, says Carolyn. Who? asks Liz. I don't know and I don't care, says Carolyn, all I know is I was all set to have a big night and I'm going to have it--with or without Joe. I must say, you're acting like a child, says Liz, and I'm ashamed of you. Thank you, says Carolyn. Joe loves you and you know it, says Liz--he's a fine boy and I'm sure he wouldn't do anything to hurt you. Not anymore, he won't, vows Carolyn. You haven't been very fair with him, you know, says Liz. I really don't want to hear anymore lectures, insists Carolyn. Well you're going to, says Liz--not so long ago, you chased a man all the way to Bangor! All right, says Carolyn, I had lunch with Burke. If I were Joe, I'd have taken a dozen girls out by now, says Liz--you ought to be thankful he hasn't. Carolyn covers her ears and says she's not going to listen to anymore. You think your world is coming to an end because for once Joe didn't jump when you snapped your fingers, says Liz--if you want to know, I'm delighted. I can't hear a word you're saying, says Carolyn, hands covering her ears. Yes you can, says Liz, and it's high time you realized the world doesn't revolve around Carolyn Stoddard! (Go, Liz, she needs to hear this!)
Carolyn uncovers her ears and says I don't care what you say--I'm going out and find someone and I'm going to have some fun--and I don't care who it is--maybe it will even be Burke Devlin--I don't care! And she races off, Liz gazing unhappily after her. (Spoiled brat!)

The Robservations references the quote almost perfectly...

The quote is also the slideshow's 28th time someone has said "I MUST say."

And Ep #85 is this month's first example where Midnite serendipitously happened upon an ep that hadn't been quoted from before.

And I've never paid attention, but I wonder if this ep is the first time they dress Liz in that outfit that will show up many times over the course of the series and even makes an appearance in hoDS. And it must have have been something that Joan Bennett herself really liked because she also wore it when she made a guest appearance on The Governor & J.J. in November of 1970.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #262 (1967) - Vicki - 'I don't know what the circumstances were, but I know you, and I'm sure that there MUST have been something more to it than just a single act.'

From  "#0261/0262: Robservations 11/28/01: ESCAPE!"
Liz asks Vicki to be a legal witness to her marriage to Jason. Tell Carolyn the truth, urges Vicki, but Liz won't consider it.
Vicki promises Liz she'll think about it.

As I've said before, the Robservations for this ep falls into the period where there's little detail, and because of that the quote isn't referenced. However, right after Liz insists that she can't tell Carolyn that she murdered her father is when the quote come up. Liz admits that there is more to it, but it's another thing she can't tell Carolyn. Vicki tries unsuccessfully to change Liz' mind and Liz says she'll understand if Vicki doesn't want to become legally involved. But once Vicki learns that Liz doesn't need an answer right away, Vicki says she'll try and let Liz know her decision sometime that day. Liz thanks her for not saying no right away...

And this is the third quote from this ep. The first (Liz - 'Carolyn MUSTN'T know. She MUSTN'T!') was back on September 14th, and the second (Carolyn - 'And I MUST admit I don't feel very much like going out') was back on November 3rd.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #409 (1796) - Joshua - 'You MUST save your strength.'

From  "#0409/0410: Robservations 03/22/02: The "V" Word is Spoken"
Writhing, Barnabas again begins screaming about the bat while his parents try fruitlessly to comfort him. "It's coming for me, help me, Josette!" wails Barnabas. Joshua looks helpless, sorrowful, and Naomi covers her face, unable to bear her son's suffering.  Joshua tells Barnabas that Josette is there to see him, but Barnabas insists that his father help him sit up on pillows before she comes in--Josette will give me strength, he assures his father, and asks Joshua to keep Angelique away (she isn't even in this episode, which I found fascinating).

The Robservations has less detail than usual, but without referencing the actual quote it does get into its circumstances from a different direction because after Joshua delivers the quote, that's what prompts Barnabas to say that Josette will give him strength...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Josette - 'Are you going to tell me Miss Winters had time to print that book? No, She MUST be from another century. She MUST have brought this book with her') was back on August 16th.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #528 (1968) - Nicholas - 'All the time you have wasted, Cassandra-- weeks are minutes to you. And there has been no accounting. But now, there MUST be.'

From  "Robservations 6/19/02 - #527/528 - Cass and Nick Bickerson"
Gazebo - Nicholas waits, complaining to himself that Cassandra has been wasting too much time--it's time they had a chat. Touching his temples, he issues a command for Cassandra to come to the gazebo, NOW.

While the Robservations doesn't reference the actual quote it does reference one of the quotes points...

And this is the fourth quote from this ep. The first (Nicholas - 'Here, let me take that. You MUST have a bon voyage drink with me to assure yourself a pleasant journey') was back on September 16th of 2021, the second (Cassandra - 'She MUST have the dream') was back on September 30th of 2021, and the third (Vicki - 'You haven't been until now. Jeff, I know how depressed you MUST feel') was back on September 30th of this year. So all that means that Ep #528 has joined the club with Eps #2, #3, #42, #44, #50, #52, #54, #66, #106, #119, #133, #158, #195, #208, #211, #212, #296, #300, #308, #315, #340, #365, #367, #377, #384, #405, #426, #449, #450, #462, #466, #479, #481, #503, #506, #518, #543, #544, #550, #608, #609, #629, #639, #643, #644, #646, #647, #651, #655, #678, #709, #717, #727, #734, #742, #743, #746, #750, #763, #764, #883, #884, #886, #889, #915, #975, #976, #977, #993, #1006, #1011, #1014, #1057, #1064, #1081, #1111, #1125, #1126, #1127, #1128, #1197, #1199, #1206, #1218 and #1232.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #776 (1897) - Tim - 'I MUST. You need a doctor. You can be all right here, really.'

From  "Robservations #776-777 - 1/22/03 - Sad Demise"
Tim, carrying Rachel, enters the Old House, frantically calling for Barnabas--for anyone!  He helps her lie down on the sofa.  I feel very weak, she says.  Of course, he says.  The pain is gone, she says.  That's good, says Tim.  No, it's bad, she says.  Tim calls over and over for Barnabas, speculating he doesn't hear me.  Rachel thinks Barnabas isn't here.  Tim says you're hurt bad, but that doesn't mean...you'll be all right, you need a doctor to fix you up.  No, doctor, she tells him.  Yes, he insists, I'm going into town to get a doctor--I hate to leave you here, but I have to.  Rachel doesn't want him to go.  I must he says--you'll be all right, really.  No, I won't be, she says, and if you go into town, they'll catch you.  I'm willing to take that chance, says Tim.  Please, she begs, they're looking for you.  I only have to go to the edge of town to Dr. Brooks' office, says Tim.  No, she objects.  Please stop saying no, begs Tim.  You don't understand, she says--if they catch you, they'll kill you.  Her body rises as she feels pain.  I'm going for the doctor, he says.  She begs him to stay with her.

The Robservations gets most of the quote quite well...

And for me Rachel's death is one of the saddest deaths on the show. Not as bad as Sarah's death in Barnabas' arms, though - that death is a killer.

And this is the third quote from this ep. The first (Gregory - 'I need Your help, oh Lord. Together, we MUST help this poor, afflicted woman possessed by an evil spirit of darkness. With Your help, we shall drive the demon back into hell from whenst it came') was back on August 16th of 2020, and the second (Judith - 'Dirk, Dirk! He's going to destroy you-- you MUSTN'T let him! Wake up, Dirk!') was back on April 3rd of 2021.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #919_920_921 (1969) - Michael - 'You MUST take me seriously.'

From  "Robservations 5/1/03 - #918-921 - Tate Gets Ahead of the Game"
Michael curls his hand over Carolyn's.  I'm sure I'll be happy here, he says--because you're here. He gazes at her, obviously smitten. Uncertain, embarrassed, she turns, chuckles, and sets a spinning wheel spinning. Don't do that, Carolyn, he says (it sounds like a command)--don't laugh at me--you must take me seriously.  I do, she assures him; I'm sure we'll be good friends.

The Robservations references the quote perfectly...

And one of the best things about this ep: Good Riddance, Alex!!

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Tate - 'What do you want then? What do you want? You MUST want something') was back on October 8th

Ep #1017 (1970PT) - Barnabas - 'You MUST NOT allow me to leave this room.'

From  "#1016/1017: Robservations 07/11/03: A New Cousin From a Distant Land"
Will, says Barnabas, open the secret panel. Barnabas has to ask again. Will, terrified, does so. Barnabas and Will enter the room.  Will closes the door behind him. You must not allow me to leave this room, instructs Barnabas. How can I stop you? asks Will ironically. I give you complete power over me this one night only, says Barnabas. I don't understand, says Will. Do you still have that cross? Barnabas asks. Yes, why? asks Will. Get it, bring it here, and do not let me see it unless... ...Unless you try to leave, finishes Will. Yes, says Barnabas. Will is still puzzled. No need for you to understand, says Barn

The Robservations references the quote perfectly...

And this is the third quote from this ep. The first (Will - 'Maggie. I MUST warn Maggie') was back on October 13th of 2021, and the second (Carolyn - 'You MUST feel very relieved') was back on April 3rd of 2023.

From  "#1140/1141: Robservations 10/24/03: Who is Miranda?"
Gerard continues to converse, one-sided, with Judah, pleading, tell me what it means--you must let me know what it means!

The Robservations references the quote nearly perfectly...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #777 (1897[-1967]) - Gregory - 'You MUST be silent.'

From  "Robservations #776-777 - 1/22/03 - Sad Demise"
you had no control over what happened.  But I did kill her, says Judith, how do you think I feel?  How do you think I feel? asks Trask, for so many years I was responsible for Rachel's soul, may it rest well in heaven tonight. (oh, give me a break!)  I can't bear it anymore, says Judith, I want you to call the police and get it over with.  Be strong, he urges her, putting his hand under her chin and making her look at him--I have fought against evil all my life and recognizes the enemy--I know what the evil force wants you to do next--permit yourself to be destroyed because of Rachel's murder.  But I did it, objects Judith.  Only if you confess to the crime, only then will you be evil, says Trask, only then will you be lying--you didn't kill Rachel, Dirk did.  But Dirk is dead, says Judith.  And so is Rachel, says Trask--will it restore her for even one moment if you, Judith, are destroyed too?--and you could easily go to the gallows.  This horrifies Judith.  And if you died, says Trask, my life would be bleak, dark, meaningless, that I would soon die, too.  Do you mean that? she asks.  Every word, swears Trask--you should be silent--I will speak to the police myself.  What about Tim? she asks.  Relax, says Trask, I will do what has to be done.  You can't keep Tim from telling the police about me, says Judith.  Trask assures her, I can.  He picks up the phone.  There is a way, he says, asking for the sheriff's office.

The Robservations changes "MUST" to "should - SHAMEFUL!! - But it still gets the point across...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Pansy's Ghost - 'I MUST find him') was back on October 13th of 2023.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #529 (1968) - Prof. Stokes - 'I didn't realize she was still staying at Collinwood. I MUST have dropped it then.'

From  "Robservations 6/20/02 - 529/530 - A Ghost Carries Out His Orders"
Joe finds the flashcards and says he thought Stokes taught college. Stokes claims he has a three-year-old nephew. They hear heavy footsteps, and Stokes says it's just his cleaning woman. (damn large cleaning woman!) Determined to make Stokes confess, Joe gives him the stick pin, saying it was found on the floor of the Evans cottage.
Stokes says he must have dropped it on one of his visits to Sam, but Joe says that's not possible because it was found AFTER Sam's death. Let me think, says Stokes--oh yes, I stopped by the cottage to pay my condolences--the door was unlocked so I stepped in; when I realized Maggie wasn't there, I left. "I see," says Joe, sounding unconvinced. Stokes ushers them out

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote at all. However, it's delivered after Stokes says he stopped by the cottage to pay his condolences and before he explains that the door was unlocked so he went inside...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Vicki - 'That MUST have been why she appeared in this room. To leave this bottle of cologne') was back on October 5th.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #778 (1897) - Magda - 'The time comes, you will know what MUST be destroyed, and you will destroy it.'

From  "Robservations 1/23/03 - #778-779 - One Hand Clapping"
How can this hand end Quentin's curse? asks Barnabas.  When the moon is full, says Magda, just before the curse seizes Quentin and turns him into an animal, we will lay this hand on Quentin's heart--it will draw the curse from him--and Quentin will be cured forever.  As simple as That? asks Barn.  The simplest magic is often the strongest, she says.  She puts a candle on the table and removes the hand from the box.  Holding it, she says, "The blood of the slaughtered nine has been washed away. . .and you who are against us are now with us.  Released by the guardians of the chains and blessed by the custodians of the 12 days, grant us the use of your powers, the powers of life and death, of night and darkness. . .the time comes, you will know what must be destroyed, and you will destroy it!"  Magda stands.  There, she says, it is done--His Excellency's hand will obey our command.  "His Excellency?" asks Barn.  In the Old Country, says Magda, he was a very important person.  Who was he? asks Barn.  It doesn't make a difference, says Magda.  I doubt this grotesque thing can help us at all, says Barnabas.  It can, she assures him, King Johnny Romano swears it.

The Robservations references the quote perfectly...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Pansy - 'You can't stop me, the show MUST go on. And what a revealing show it's goin' to be') was back on July 30th of 2020.
