If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #1230 (1841PT) - Julia - 'Yes, you MUST tell me! Tell me, you MUST!'

From  "#1230/1231: Robservations 01/05/04: Brutus' Revenge"
Upstairs, Julia hears Morgan screaming, "STAY AWAY FROM ME! STAY AWAY FROM ME!" She comes in to find Morgan lying on the floor. You are still Forsythe, she says. Yes, he agrees, but Brutus is here and sending me back to my tomb--time is running out, I feel weaker every moment--you must listen to me, while there is still time, you must hear the truth about the curse--what really happened in 1680. Yes, says Julia anxiously, you must tell me!
"Brutus is here! It is too late for you to stop me!" Forsythe shouts--"I am going to tell the truth at last--what really happened in 1680--your family will finally know about the curse!"

The Robservations references part of the quote perfectly, but not the second part of it...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #1179_1180 (1840) - Judge Vail - 'No, no, the defense MUST be given the right of cross-examination, Mr Dawson.'

From  "#1178/1179_1180: Robservations 11/21/03: Amazing Appearances"
Are you prepared to cross-examine the witness? asks Vail.  I request a transcript of the witness' testimony for the prosecution, says Barnabas.  By all means, agrees the judge, as Trask tries to recover from his astonishment.  Looking as if he's about to hurl, he says, I can't continue my testimony.  I beg your pardon? says the judge.  Dawson gazes warningly at Trask and darts forward--Mr. Trask,  is something the matter?  I'm not well, falters Trask, I have a severe pain in my chest, I think I should consult a doctor.  In view of the witness' condition, Dawson tells the judges, I urge you to release him from further testimony.   Is counsel asking that the witness not be cross-examined? queries Barnabas.  It's obvious Mr. Trask is a very sick man, says Dawson.  The defense must be given the right of cross-examination, Mr. Dawson, says Vail, the question is when?  The defense would welcome a brief postponement in order to fully acquaint myself with the case, says Barn.  The request is granted, says Judge Vail--court is adjourned until 10 AM tomorrow.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #1049 (1970PT) - Carolyn - 'You MUST tell me, really, why you killed her.'

From  "#1048/1049: Robservations 08/04/03: Julia Messes Up; Another Murder?"
Carolyn stands in the tower room, by the window where it happened, asking Will, do you mind me lying about you?---I know you must come, if I stay here long enough, you must come here. The door opens and closes; an unseen person enters the room. I'd almost given up on you, says Carolyn, smiling, I'm not afraid, you see, before yesterday, I would have been--you must tell me, really, why you killed her--I have to know.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #967 (1970) - Philip - 'I MUST be dreaming.'

From  "Robservations 6/4/03 - #966-967 - Repercussions; Vampire Megan's Life"
Philip lies on the bed in his jail cell. Megan leans over him as if to kiss him. He wakes up and is shocked to see her--I must be dreaming.  No, she says, I'm here. How did you get in at this hour? He asks. I made an "arrangement" with one of the guards, she says (a hungry, horny vampire is our Megan), grinning; I realized I hadn't seen you in a long time. No, you haven't, says Philip in a wounded tone, and I've needed you desperately. I know, she says, fingering her scarf, but I haven't been feeling well. Instantly concerned, he asks, what's the matter? Never mind, I'm fine now, she says, forget about me, let's talk about you.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #868 (1897) - Edward - 'Nevertheless, we MUST take him anyway.'

From  "Robservations 3/28/03 - #868-869 - Doppelganger"
"He's gone, he's finished with me--he's never going to come back to me anymore!" He IS finished with you, says Edward. "Yes," says Barnabas, relieved. "How do you know?" He's dead, reveals Edward.  Quentin pulls Edward away from Barnabas, and says, wait a minute, come here you fool--why are you telling him the creature's dead?--do you know what that means?--that you believe he's a vampire victim and not the vampire? Well, I don't. Incredible as it sounds, says Edward--it could have happened. If it didn't, says Q, and the man is lying, what then? Edward agrees--I was ready to accept this man too easily. I want to finish him off right now, says Q.  Not yet, says Edward--there's one way we can test him, one more way, with more than words to prove it--the three of us together can go to the cave and look into the coffin. No, says Quentin, I saw the body in the coffin and brought you the ring. Yes, but you were there before this man went to Dr. Reed, Edward says--I think we should go another time--now. I think he's too weak to go to the cave, says Q.  We must take him anyway, insists Edward, who helps the unsteady Barnabas off the table and assists him in walking.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #691 (1969) - Mrs. Johnson - 'Mrs. Stoddard, if you don't believe me, ask the children. David, Amy, you MUST have seen him, too. This time you can't deny it.'

From  "Robservations 10/16/02 - #690-691 - Deathly Silence at Collinwood"
Liz runs to Maggie, asking what happened. Mrs. Johnson says he was there, the same man I saw at the cottage, in THIS very room. Liz insists it's impossible--you only preceded me into the room by five seconds. He's more than a man, insists Mrs. J, evil and sinister. Liz is more concerned about Maggie. Mrs. Johnson tells Liz, if you don't believe me, ask the children--she turns and asks David and Amy to back her up. They can't deny seeing him. David says we didn't do anything, it wasn't our fault. Mrs. J grabs David's arm to force him to admit it. He complains she's hurting his arm. Liz stands and orders her to stop it and take the kids upstairs. David begs his aunt--I don't want to be alone!--and Mrs. Johnson refuses to go anywhere "with that man about!" There is no man! says Liz, assuring David that Amy will be with him. (no safety in those numbers!) Mrs. J agrees to take the kids upstairs, but refuses to stay there--I will lock the door to keep them safe, but I'm not staying there.

The Robservations references the quote well but not in its entirety...

And I love this ep. It's one of only two eps Ralph Ellis wrote and it's a shame that he only wrote two because both are spectacular. But it seems to have been insinuated that, shall we say, working on DS wasn't the type of environment for him.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #624 (1968) - Nicholas - 'Adam MUST believe that you love him, whether you do or not.'

From  "Robservations 8/28/02 - #624/625 - Wedding Day?"
He asks about the book and wants to see it. She hands it over and he glances through it. While he's engrossed, Eve hides her letter behind the clock. Nicholas realizes it's a history of the Collins and asks where she got it. At Collinwood, she says. Why did you want it? he asks. I just wanted to know more about the illustrious Collinses, she replies. He accuses her of hiding something, and you'd better cooperate with me, he warns--you know why I've allowed you to live--because of Adam--and you had better make Adam think you love him--you haven't been very successful so far. She promises to do better. She smiles winningly at him, and he asks why she's suddenly so cooperative. Because I know what will happen if I'm not.

The Robservations paraphrases the quote and doesn't even use "must" in the process - shameful...

Ep #456 (1796) - Vicki - 'That's Nathan. He MUSTN'T find me.'

From  "#0455/0456: Robservations 04/24/02: Nathan Outdoes His Own Villainy"
they all overhear Nathan calling Millicent.

It's strange that the Robservations doesn't deal with the quote at all. However, what happens is that after they all hear Nathan calling for Millicent, Vicki delivers the quote as she, Naomi and Daniel begins to panic and then Naomi concurs with Vicki...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #352 (1967) - Carolyn - 'It was only my imagination just as the things you're saying about Barnabas-- Barnabas are your imagination. And you MUST understand and accept that before it's too late.'

From  "#0351/0352: Robservations 02/11/02: Cousin in a Vampire Thrall"
heads into David's room at the ungodly hour of 6 AM and wakes him up. Essentially, she denies ever having seen or spoken to Sarah, putting it down to her imagination, and tells him if he doesn't straighten up and admit everything about Sarah and Barnabas came from HIS imagination, he'll be sent away to a home for disturbed children.

The Robservations is another in the period where's there's little detail and as such it barely deals with the quote. However, it comes up after Carolyn denies having seen Sarah and she delivers the quote right afterward. That prompts David to ask what she means by "before it's too late"? And Carolyn explains that if he insists on believing the things he's been telling people, before long they're going to start thinking he's very sick. David denies being sick and says she knows it. But Carolyn presses the point with, "You don't want them to send you away, do you?" David asks, "Away where?" And Carolyn seizes that to say, "To a home for mentally disturbed children." What a loving cousin...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #187 (1967) - Roger - 'I MUST say I don't shock easily, but Guthrie's death has made me sit up.'

From  "#0186/0187: Robservations 10/01/01: Get David Outta Here!"
Roger comes in. I'm afraid we have some bad news, says Carolyn. So I've heard, says Roger, removing his hat, it's all over town--he shakes his head and enters the drawing room, coming face to face with Burke. Burke carries David home, says Carolyn. Joe Haskell filled me in, says Roger, thank you, Devlin, I appreciate--I must say I don't shock easily, but Guthrie's death has made me sit up. He pours a drink--I behaved rather shabbily, too, when all he was trying to do was help. Burke steps forward. I did the same thing, says Burke. I found what he had to say preposterous, says Roger--he blamed everything that happened here on Laura--I'm sure he would have pointed the finger of responsibility for his own death at Laura. Who else could he have pointed it at? asks Burke--he'd drawn his conclusions about her and was on his way to reveal that information at the seance--Laura knew what he was going to do--she got to him somehow. Do you think she did it? asks Roger. I think she had something to do with it, says Burke, just as I think she had something to do with putting your sister in the hospital.

The Robservations references the quote perfectly...

And quite obviously this topic/slideshow has proved time and time again that "MUST" is everyone in Collinsport's favorite word. However, I've suspected for some time that they may very well also have a favorite phrase that includes "MUST," and it's "I MUST SAY" - in honer of today's quote I took inventory of the quotes we've shared so far in the slideshow and that phrase has shown up 27 times, counting today's entry!

09/27/20: Ep #494 (1968) - Maggie - 'But one thing I MUST say, though. These earrings are different.'

10/05/20: Ep #206 (1967) - Liz - 'I don't need any help, and I MUST say, Vicki, I'm rather annoyed with you.'

10/23/20: Ep #155 (1967) - Laura - 'I MUST say, you're very good at making threats, aren't you?'

05/02/21: Ep #134 (1966) - Roger - 'I MUST say I'm very pleased with this new-found attitude.'

06/21/21: Ep #123 (1966) - Joe - 'Although I MUST say I would have liked to have given her a chop or two.'

01/09/22: Ep #1090 (1970) - Sebastian - 'I MUST say I was not prepared for you at all. I heard your name mentioned amongst the family, but no one ever said how lovely you were.'

02/08/22: Ep #137 (1967) - Sam - 'Well, I, uh, thought he was being very clever, but I MUST say you topped him beautifully.'

08/15/22: Ep #43 (1966) - Bill - 'Only I MUST say Sam makes no secret of it.'

11/12/22: Ep #1195 (1841PT) - Quentin - 'You've, uh, grown up the past 5 years, and I MUST say I like what I see.'

11/14/22: Ep #135 (1966) - Liz - 'I MUST say I'm favorably impressed by Laura.'

01/23/23: Ep #238 (1967) - Carolyn - 'Hello, Barnabas. We came to see how the restoration was coming along, and I MUST say I'm absolutely amazed at what you've done here.'

03/03/23: Ep #241 (1967) - Maggie - 'Yes. I want to talk. There's something that I MUST say.'*

03/26/23: Ep #729 (1897) - Quentin - 'I'm afraid I got so curious I opened it. And I MUST say you carry the most interesting items in your purse.'

06/01/23: Ep #1206 (1841PT) - Josette - 'You haven't asked me, Bramwell, but I MUST say it--you MUST forget Catherine.'

06/04/23: Ep #174 (1967) - Lt. Costa - 'Yeah, I MUST say I'm relieved.'

07/31/23: Ep #499 (1968) - Carolyn - 'I MUST say, I didn't expect to find anything quite so tacky as this.'

09/13/23: Ep #66 (1966) - Roger - 'I MUST say, Burke, I've been completely wrong about you.'

10/23/23: Ep #55 (1966) - Roger - 'Malloy a suicide? Well, I MUST say, that never occurred to me.'

10/26/23: Ep #245 (1967) - Barnabas - 'Well, I MUST say that, uh, I hope that Willie has nothing to do with what's happened to that young girl.'

01/04/24: Ep #398 (1796) - Angelique - 'I MUST say it comes as kind of a shock to find that one's husband is hiding another woman in the house.'

01/10/24: Ep #1077 (1970) - Quentin - 'Well, I MUST say that your gratitude is less than overwhelming.'

01/14/24: Ep #252 (1967) - Joe - 'Well, I MUST say there's nothing like the Collins family for setting this town on its ear.'

03/08/24: Ep #910 (1969) - 'Grant' - 'I MUST say I'm impressed. I really wouldn't mind being a Collins.'

05/17/24: Ep #762 (1897) - Tim - 'Reverend Trask, I-I MUST say there may have been times in the past when I misjudged you.'

06/23/24: Ep #7 (1966) - Vicki - 'Mr. Devlin, I MUST say you're a strange man.'

08/11/24: Ep #188 (1967) - Roger - 'I MUST say, Laura, I'm rather impressed with your show of sensibility.'

10/22/24: Ep #187 (1967) - Roger - 'I MUST say I don't shock easily, but Guthrie's death has made me sit up.'

*(Although, the 03/03/23 quote uses it differently than the others.)

And so far the #1 character to use the phrase most often, 5 times, is Roger. But who know how many more examples of its use may show up in the future and who it is who will use it...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #108 (1966) - Matthew - 'Mz. Stoddard MUSTA said somethin' about it.'

From  "#0107/0108(_0109): Robservations 08/06/01: Revelation; Vicki in BIG Danger"
That car that tried to run me down, that wasn't my imagination, she says. Probably that was an accident, too, the driver didn't see you, he says. He saw me, all right, he came right at me, says Vicki viciously. Maybe he didn't see ya until he almost hit ya, you can't see past your headlights on a country road at eight in the evening. (Oh, God--enlightenment!) What did you say? asks Vicki. I said it was probably an accident, he says--and what were you doing wandering around on a lonely stretch of road that time of night--you should know better. She looks at him. How did you know what time it happened? she asks him. (Now would have been a good time to shut up, Vicki!) You mentioned it, he says shakily. No, she says, I didn't--I said the car tried to run me down last night, I didn't say what time, just last night. Mz. Stoddard must have said something about it, mumble Matthew, realizing he screwed up. You told me that she hadn't spoken to you all day, accuses Vicki. I just overheard one thing she said, says Matthew, she was talking about an accident, she said it happened at eight o'clock--I didn't know what she was talkin' about! All right, I guess that explains it, says Vicki. You don't believe me, do ya? asks Matthew.

The Robservations references the quote almost perfectly...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
DS 1991 Ep #11 (-1966: Ep #13) - Trask - 'Your Honor, MUST we suffer this catalogue of slanders against a woman who cannot defend herself?'

From SHADOWS IN THE '90s: The Dark Shadows Concordance 1991 - PLOT SUMMARIES - EPISODE ELEVEN:
                                      LATER: Under Peter's
questioning, Ben testifies that he doesn't remember
how Angelique put the hex on him, but he's positive
she did. Peter shows him the doll, pointing out it was
found in Angelique's room. Peter asks if Angelique was
responsible for Jeremiah's death. Ben testifies how he knew
there was no ball in Barnabas' pistol, that Angelique used
black magic to put the ball there. Trask objects - there's no
point in listening to slander against a dead woman. Despite
her death, Collinsport is still being plagued by demonic acts of
witchery - just last night there were two "heinous" acts in
town. "Does Mr. Bradford believe she is striking from beyond
the grave?" Peter says he does - and this is no different than
Trask claiming Victoria is instigating witchery from a jail cell.
To everyone's astonishment, Angelique enters the courtroom.
"Please... May I say something?" Ben screams in horror -
"You're dead! I saw you!" He keeps repeating this, shouting
"SHE'S A WITCH!" The courtroom mutters. Angelique, hurt,
asks how he can say such a thing. Of course she isn't dead.
Ben tries to attack her, shouting that Angelique is a witch. He's
dragged from the courtroom amid general chaos.

And the summary doesn't use exactly what Trask says, but it does get the quote's point across...

And as I've done previously when it comes to the '91 Series, I used a screen capture from the TGG Direct DVD release that's the same dimensions as the ones from the original series -

- because even though that release also doesn't have the correct color timing like the VHS release does -

- also like the VHS release, it has the correct aspect ratio, plus it even tends to show a bit more of the frame and it's clearer than the VHS.

And even though the MGM DVD release, like the TGG Direct release, is clearer than the VHS, frustratingly, the aspect ratio is cropped from 4X3 to 16X9 -

- and too bad for the courtroom onlooker because he's practically completely clipped out of MGM DVD release.

And Ep #13 now joins Eps #1, #5, #8, #12, #120, #124, #136, #138, #139, #189, #198, #210, #217, #219, #478, #659, #667, #904 and #1008 as ones without any "must" lines - and it's the last one for this month. (And as a preview there are only three eps without any "must" lines among the eps I've currently picked for December. And I say "currently picked" because there's always the chance that for November Midnite could pick a quote from one of the eps before I get to it...)

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #220 (1967) - Liz - 'And I MUST check with the doctor. He MUST have given him one of those new miracle drugs.'

From  "#0220/0221: Robservations 10/25/01: Barnabas Meets Maggie"
Drawing room - Jason tells Liz he's convinced Willie to leave, and she encourages Jason himself to consider going. Willie comes in

The Robservations falls into that abyss where there's little detail and it's definitely a shame in this case because the scene between Liz and Jason is great. The way things begin to lead up to the quote is that Jason asks Liz, who's sitting at the desk in the drawing room, if she's pleased but she replies that "pleased" is hardly the word. "He'll be out of here in a few minutes, and then everything will be back to normal." Liz stands and says, "Nothing will be back to normal until you're gone, too." And Jason actually says that might be sooner than she thinks. "Anything that I can do to speed the day?" "I'll let you know." "Yes, do." Liz then mentions that she was under the impression that Jason's friend was very much sicker than he is and would be there a long, long time. Jason says he's feeling better. "Is he now? What an amazing recovery." "Well, now, Liz, the doctor said--" Though Liz cuts him off by saying, "Yes, amazing," and she follows that with the quote. And after that is when Willie comes in...

And no one could deliver lines of sarcasm better that Joan Bennett (and Louis Edmonds). Those quoted lines from Liz is are some of my absolute favorite from the show and she delivers them to perfection, as she does all her sarcastic lines in the scene. It's exchanges like this that make the Blackmailing Liz storyline one of my favorites, and it really is a pity that the Robservations doesn't include it.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #531 (1968) - Barnabas - 'Oh Julia, we MUST find him and put him out of his misery once and for all.'

From  "Robservation 6/21/02 - #531/532_533 - Barnabas Offers Himself"
She checks out Joe--he isn't dead, says Julia, but right now, I'm not certain if he'll live. Barnabas doesn't understand how Joe met Adam but he now knows that Adam is completely out of control and that they must find him. Julia is convinced that Adam is getting help from someone because no one has seen him for a week. That person is probably dead, says Barnabas soberly, and she is forced to agree.

Some of the way the Robservations is written is a bit misleading and the way things actually play is that Julia says that it doesn't matter how Joe encountered Adam because the damage has been done. But Barnabas says, "No. Julia. The damage was done long before tonight. We allowed Adam to live, and now he's at large and completely out of control. He will go on killing unless we can find him, and stop him somehow." To that Julia says, "Barnabas, it's been almost a week since Adam disappeared after Sam Evans' accident, and there's been no reports of anyone seeing him. Which may mean that someone has been protecting him." "If anyone did help him, then probably he's dead by now." And then Barnabas follows that with the quote, followed by Julia remarking, "Yes. Yes, you're probably right."...

And something I feel compelled to say is that in this ep Barnabas is perhaps his most rotten to Willie to get Willie to agree to do what Barnabas wants:

Later, after Barnabas tells him what's been happening, he instructs Willie to take Joe to the hospital in Julia's car. Willie says that it looks to him like Adam is trying to frame Barnabas. Willie doesn't want to help Barnabas even after Barnabas tells him to just do as he is told. Willie says that Maggie likes him and with Joe out of the way he might have a better chance (LOL!). Barnabas doesn't believe a word of this. Willie tells Barnabas that he can prove Maggie wants to see him again. Totally annoyed by Willie's refusal to listen to reason, Barnabas says that he will leave the body where it is and have the police find it-of course, Barnabas will make sure that the police understand that Willie had a good motive to hurt Joe (that's just nasty, Barn, reverting to your old ways!). He gives Willie 10 seconds to make up his mind about what he's going to do.

Many fans often like to say that it was the curse that made Barnabas act as nastily as he did when he was under the curse. But that scene is proof that Barnabas could be even more rotten when he wasn't under the curse and someone wasn't willing to bend to his will. Taking manipulation to rotten extremes to get his way is simply a part of Barnabas, curse or no curse. And actually, Barnabas is even more rotten in the scene towards Willie than the Robservations fully details - watch it some day and you might be shocked...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #782 (1897) - Charity - 'But you MUST NOT stay here long. You MUST make other plans.'

From  "Robservations 1/27/03 - #782-783 - Trapped!"
Go to the window and remove the cross, and then I will appear to you, he promises.  Looking very pleased at this prospect, she takes down the cross and puts it away in her dresser drawer.  Barnabas appears.  She's very relieved--I thought about you all day, she says--there was so little time before the dawn, I was afraid...I didn't know if you have found safety or perished.  "I am safe now," he says smiling, "thanks to you."  "I have pleased you?" she asks.  "Very much," he responds.  It's too dangerous for you to come back here, says Charity.  Your father believed it would be impossible for me to come back here, says Barnabas, but he's underestimated my powers.  Charity looks puzzled--you must not stay long, she warns Barnabas--you must make other plans, find a permanent hiding place, and then take me there with you--I want to be with you, she says, "Oh, Barnabas, that is what I want."

The Robservations references the quote almost perfectly...
