If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #84 (1966) - Carolyn - 'Well you sure MUST'VE been expecting my call. Look at you-- all spiffed up and ready to go out on the town.'

From  "#0083/0084: Robservations 07/19/01: Vicki Imprisoned"
Carolyn comes downstairs at Collinwood to answers Joe's knock. Joe Haskell, what a surprise! She says. Hi, Carolyn, he says dispiritedly. Is that all you have to say? she asks--kissing him--you can do better than that--and he gives her a warmer kiss--better than that, too, she says.
He takes her hands off his arm and says he came over as soon as he could. You sure must have been expecting my call, she says admiringly, observing his suit and tie--all spiffed up and ready to go out on the town! You see, says Joe hesitantly, I...Carolyn--hello, Mrs. Stoddard, he greets Liz, who has exited the kitchen. I see you've decided to speak to each other again, she observes with a grin. I never said I wouldn't, says Joe--I was here earlier, looking for you. I was out, says Carolyn--walking off my idiotic mood. That's what Vicki told me, says Joe. You saw Vicki? asks Liz--how long ago was that? About an hour, says Joe--why? Joe came to take me out to dinner, chides Carolyn, not to worry about David and Vicki. Did she say anything about going out? asks Liz anxiously. No, says Joe. David and Vicki aren't here, says Carolyn. Was David here when you stopped by? Asks Liz. Yes, says Joe, Vicki said something about she and David being alone in the house--she acted a little uncomfortable about it--I got the impression she wanted me to stick around until someone else got home. Why didn't you? asks Carolyn. I really couldn't, says Joe, I had things to do and I had to leave. Frankly, I'm a little worried, says Liz. That's enough about that, says Carolyn--David and Vicki are perfectly all right and will turn up any minute--you'll see

The Robservations references the quote well, though not perfectly, leaving out some words here and there...

And serendipity appears to have been working overtime lately because this is the third time in a row that Midnite happened upon an ep that hadn't been quoted from before. Just as with Eps #82, #83, #262, #1016 and #1139 earlier this month, Ep #84 is another example.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #773 (1897[-1967]) - Evan - 'You remember what I said, Tim? This is all an experiment. It is as if we were in a laboratory. We MUST remain very clinical.'

From  "Robservations 1/17/03 - #772-773 - Minerva, Queen of Spades"
Charity's mother lies in her chair, still alive, moaning.  She opens her eyes and sees Tim.  You did this to me, she accuses--why?  You played the Queen of Spades, he tells her.  "Murderer!" she calls him, finally sinking back in her chair, dead.  "I had to," he says, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world, "you played the Queen of Spades--he told me when you played the queen, it would happen."  The door opens; Evan Hanley walks in.  "Who told you, Tim?" he asks, assuring him, it's all right--I will help you--this is like an experiment; it's as if we are in a laboratory, and we must remain very clinical.  Evan checks out Minerva, taking her pulse.  He glances at Tim and says, "You did well."

The Robservations references the quote well, though not perfectly, leaving out parts and changing others...

And serendipity definitely appears to have been working overtime lately because this is the fourth time in a row that Midnite happened upon an ep that hadn't been quoted from before. Just as with Eps #82, #83, #84, #262, #1016 and #1139 earlier this month, Ep #773 is another example.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #408 (1796) - Vicki - 'You MUST find it and read it. It tells what lies ahead. And perhaps, by some miracle, knowing it will change it.'

From  "#0407/0408: Robservations 03/21/02: Bedrest For Barnabas"
Josette, determined, goes to the gaol to see Vicki. Lift Barnabas' curse, she begs the governess, and I'll get you out of here somehow. Or, begs Josette, destroy ME, I have no life without him anyway. Vicki denies being a witch, but, disturbed to learn how ill Barnabas is, once again makes a foolhardy decision--go get the Collins family history book out of my room, she tells Josette. Something terrible is going to happen to you, and perhaps if you have foreknowledge, you'll be able to prevent it. You're in terrible danger, leave Collinwood, advises Vicki passionately.

This Robservations is from the period where's there's little detail and the quote isn't referenced. However, some of the points the quote covers are at least mentioned. But the way the quote comes up is that first, after Vicki continually denies that she's a witch so she can't help Barnabas, it dawns on her that that there is something she can do to help Josette. Josette insists she doesn't need the help, but Vicki tells her that she has to leave at once because she's in terrible danger. Josette realizes that's what Barnabas told her. Vicki doesn't know if the past can be changed, but Josette has to go away. After Josette asks why, Vicki says a terrible fate awaits her, a terrible death. Josette accuses her again of being a witch, which Vicki denies, but Josette asks then how could she say those things? Vicki says she could explain but she wouldn't believe her. But she then goes on to explain that there's a history book of the Collins family in her room. Josette asks what good that could do her? And after that is when Vicki delivers the quote. And after Josette accuses it is witchcraft, Vicki insists she's only trying to help her and begs Josette to find the book and read it and leave Collinwood. Josette stares at Vicki, not knowing what to think. End of scene...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Barnabas - 'Never TELL her, I MUST never TELL her') was back on June 9th of 2020.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #526 (1968) - Cassandra - 'I need your help, Nicholas. The dream curse MUST continue. Nothing MUST prevent its fulfillment.'

From  "Robservations 6/18/02 - #525/526 - Cassangelique, Resurrected"
His help may be needed to make sure the dream curse continues. He reminds her of their bargain, which means "more than anything else" to him (wonder what that is?). She seems uneasy about this "bargain," but promises to keep it.

This Robservations covers the first two points of the quote but not the third, which is the second "MUST" part - shameful!!...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Nicholas - 'You know what you MUST tell to Roger') was back on August 29th.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #772 (1897) - Carl - 'Oh yes, you see when Judith ran away, Pansy MUST have realized that Judith didn't like her.'

From  "Robservations 1/17/03 - #772-773 - Minerva, Queen of Spades"
Barnabas hides Pansy's body in the secret room.  Carl, still calling "Barnabas!" over and over, continues knocking.  Barnabas hangs up his cloak, lets Carl in and claims not to know where Pansy is.  You must know, says Carl.  I went out to look for Dirk, claims Barn.  Carl is unhappy Pansy was left alone.  She said she'd be all right, Barn assures him.  Carl figures Pansy guessed Judith didn't like her, and wonders, what'll I do?--Judith says I'm not in love, but she's always trying to tell me how I feel--Pansy and I love each other, she's a fighter--she wouldn't just leave!--  Pansy hasn't had an easy life, she wouldn't get mad and leave because Judith left.  Barn apologizes for not being more helpful.

This Robservations doesn't reference the quote but it does bring up the circumstances under which it's delivered and it paraphrases the quote's main point, though without using "MUST" - shameful!!...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Tim - 'It MUST happen tonight') was back on August 30th.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #918 (1969) - David - 'For the people of Leviathan, all others are enemies. But the enemies of Leviathan MUST NOT die by the hand of Leviathan. Only their own kind, themselves, can end their existence on the Earth that they have stolen from the people of Leviathan. In that way their spirits shall not return to war against us.'

From  "Robservations 5/1/03 - #918-921 - Tate Gets Ahead of the Game"
David looks at the snakes in the Leviathan book and seems to fall into an orgasmic trance, breathing heavily. To Liz, he reads, "For the people of Leviathan, all others are enemies, but the enemies of Leviathan must not die by the hand of Leviathan, only their own kind, themselves can end their existence on the earth if they have stolen from the people of Leviathan. In that way, their spirits shall not return to war against us."  Liz asks what that means. That you're a true Leviathan, says David
--something inside of you kept you from killing Julia, from disobeying the book. No, says Liz, not true--I wasn't thinking of the book, or Leviathan, I was thinking of her, and our friendship. No, denies David vehemently, you were thinking of Leviathan--you knew if you killed her, her spirit would come back to war against us, and you knew that because you are one of us--we do not kill because the spirit of a dead enemy is more dangerous than the enemy himself

This Robservations reference the quote almost perfectly. Oddly, it changes the "that" in "that they have stolen" to an "if," as in "if they have stolen"...  [ghost_huh]

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (David - 'Everything we MUST know. Everything we MUST do is in this book') was back on August 20th.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #1140 (1840[-1967]) - Daniel - 'I'm sorry. I have made a mistake. I MUST have been thinking of someone else.'

From  "#1140/1141: Robservations 10/24/03: Who is Miranda?"
Daniel enters--have you heard the terrible news about Roxanne? he asks--good Lord, no one is safe outside anymore--do they know how she was attacked?  Valerie looks down.  No, it's still a complete mystery, says Quentin.  Strange how her death is similar to those I remember when I was a boy, says Daniel.  Don't start imagining things, cautions Quentin.  I'm not imagining anything, insists Daniel imperiously, I remember the incidents very clearly--it was in 1797, the village was in an uproar, there was a whole series of these vicious attacks, and each victim had two marks left on his neck and suffered a tremendous loss of blood--you remember the incident, don't you? he asks Valerie.  Father, how would Valerie know anything about what happened in your childhood? asks Quentin.
I'm sorry, says Daniel, I have made a mistake, I must have been thinking of someone else, I have not been well since I heard the news

This Robservations reference the quote perfectly...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Amadeus - 'This man is a warlock, the living embodiment of Lucifer himself--he's depraved and evil!--his acts of sorcery are legendary--he MUST be condemned--and it is your Christian duty to tell this tribunal all you know about him!') was back on June 3rd of 2023.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #527 (1968) - Prof. Stokes - 'Jeff, Jeff, we MUST continue, we MUST forget Adam. We MUST continue with you before Lang, before Lang.'

From  "Robservations 6/19/02 - #527/528 - Cass and Nick Bickerson"
If you saw Lang's creation, would you recognize it? Stokes asks. I would, says Jeff. Stokes retrieves Adam from the bedroom and asks Jeff is this is the man Lang was trying to bring to life. Jeff goes to Adam, who recoils, afraid. Stokes reassures him it's all right. Jeff looks over Adam's arm and screams, "Yes! He's alive!" Stokes sends Adam back into the bedroom and tries to calm down Jeff, who is very agitated

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote directly, but at least it references the circumstances of the quote as it is delivered as Prof. Stokes tries to calm Jeff down...

And this is the third quote from this ep. The first (Prof. Stokes - 'Go now. Pack quickly. You MUST get away from this house') was back on July 16th of 2020, and the second (Nicholas - 'Well, I MUST go and thank her for it. Where did she find it?') was delivered back on October 25th of 2020.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #774 (1897) - Gregory - 'You MUST forgive me, Miss Collins.'

From  "Robservations 1/21/03 - #774-775 - The End For Rachel?"
He answers--it's Judith.  She expresses her condolences and offers help in his loss.  He apologizes for being startled at seeing her there--I should have known a woman of your high character would respond to anther's grief.  I didn't know Minerva well, begins Judith.  She wasn't easy to know, says Trask, bowing his lying head--but she was a devoted wife and good woman.  I felt that the first time I met her, agrees Judith.  Choking up, Trask says, that's very kind of you--I tried to be brave about this, because it's what Minerva would have wanted, but it's so difficult.

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote directly, but it does reference the quote's circumstances so that it's easy to see when it's delivered...

And what a hypocrite Gregory is!!  [hall2_rolleyes] [hall2_angry]

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Judith - 'I'm sure that she would be the first one to tell you that your life MUST go on'), which is from the same scene, was back on August 24th of 2022.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #528 (1968) - Vicki - 'You haven't been until now. Jeff, I know how depressed you MUST feel.'

From  "Robservations 6/19/02 - #527/528 - Cass and Nick Bickerson"
In the drawing room, Jeff and Vicki argue over whether she should leave Collinwood. He wants her to stay because the dream is no big deal. She says it's a curse, and Stokes believes she will be the one to bring the dream to Barnabas. Jeff says Stokes isn't infallible-- after all, he sure didn't help him!
He whines that he still doesn't know who he is, and even though he's taking his frustrations out on her, he needs Vicki to be with him. (oh, get a grip!) He also doesn't like the idea because Vicki's doing it for Barnabas.

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote at all. Though it does reference the quote's circumstances because it comes up after Jeff admits he's taking out his frustrations on Vicki...

And this is the third quote from this ep. The first (Nicholas - 'Here, let me take that. You MUST have a bon voyage drink with me to assure yourself a pleasant journey') was back on September 16th of 2021, and the second (Cassandra - 'She MUST have the dream') was exactly 3 years ago today on September 30th of 2021.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
DS 1991 Ep #7 (-1966: Ep #12) - Peter - 'Then you MUST NOT go back to the manor. For if they think you are mad, they will ship you off to the madhouse and that is a fate worth weeping over.'

From SHADOWS IN THE '90s: The Dark Shadows Concordance 1991 - PLOT SUMMARIES - EPISODE SEVEN:
WOODS: Victoria runs through the woods but
stops, appalled at the sight of Collinwood. It clearly is
still under construction. Victoria breathes, "Oh, no..." She
approaches the house, then goes inside. Workmen
engaged in various tasks are everywhere. Nearing tears,
she whispers, "Dear God, what is this? Help me...!" She
reminds herself, "The seance... Maybe I can get back the
way I came..." She takes a seat on a barrel, closes her
eyes and begins to fiercely concentrate. "Time to wake
up now. Sara, I need your help. Sara, are you in this
room? I need your help!" She becomes more frantic,
continuing to call out to Sara. A man comes up to her
and suggests she might find Sara in the nursery. Vic-
toria, "You're - never mind." "I am Peter Bradford... and
who are you?" Victoria, "Is this real? Never mind.
Stupid question." He tells her it's not a stupid question -
he asks himself the same thing all the time. "Sadly, I al-
ways arrive at the same answer. This is as real as it will
be." She looks around. "This house - why is it - ?" He ex-
plains Joshua Collins asks him the same question on a
daily basis - "But it is almost finished, praise God, and I
hope in a matter of days to tell him he and his family
can move in." Victoria repeats the name Joshua Collins -
"Barnabas Collins is his son." Peter explains that Bar-
nabas and his brother Jeremiah are his best friends. Vic-
toria dissolves into tears. Confused, he apologizes for
whatever he said. She sobs it's nothing, not his fault -
"It's just all this!" He claims, "As worlds go, we are an
Eden. Good soil, plentiful game, an ocean, and a wilder-
ness to explore. Take heart! Now - what is your name?"
"Victoria... Victoria Winters." "Victoria. 'Tis a lovely
name. May I call you Victoria?" He asks her what she's
doing in these parts. Still sobbing, she says she doesn't
know. "I - I was sent here... I think." Confused, he asks if
she's had an accident - perhaps hit her head? She seizes
on this explanation - "Yes. An accident." He asks if she
has a calling. She explains she's the new tutor for
"David - Daniel". He realizes she's been to the manor
house. She explains they were very kind, but thought
her crazy. Concerned, he asks if there was talk of the
bailiff. She says yes, and he wants her not to return;
they will ship her off to the madhouse "and that is a fate
worth weeping over. She insists she can't leave this
place - it might be her only chance to get back. He
decides not to try to understand, but if she wishes to
stay she must convince them she is sane. "The boy
thinks you're his tutor - his tutor you shall be." He takes

her to another room, which contains a writing desk, and
writes a letter of introduction from her "previous owner" -
"Joshua is a stickler; he will need bonded word." He offers to
speak to Barnabas on her behalf. "You must have a sound tale,
soundly told..." He continues writing.

And the summary doesn't specifically reference the entire quote but certainly enough of it to know when and how it comes up. On the other hand, a few lines here and there have been dropped. And the two uses of "must" in the latter part of the summary are indeed used, so those lines may show up in the slideshow as some future installment...

And as I've done previously when it comes to the '91 Series, I used a screen capture from the TGG Direct DVD release that's the same dimensions as the ones from the original series -

- because even though that release also doesn't have the correct color timing like the VHS release does -

- also like the VHS release, it has the correct aspect ratio, plus it even tends to show a bit more of the frame and it's clearer than the VHS.

And even though the MGM DVD release, like the TGG Direct release, is clearer than the VHS, frustratingly, the aspect ratio is cropped from 4X3 to 16X9 -

- and it's interesting that in this instance compared to the MGM release, the TGG Direct release shows more all around, which is the first time we're seeing something like that happen.

And Ep #12 now joins Eps #1, #5, #8, #120, #124, #136, #138, #189, #198, #210, #217, #478, #659, #667 and #904 as ones without any "must" lines - and that's just the first one for this month.

                             SAMANTHA
Do you want a mob outside this
                 house?  A mob with firebrands?
                             STRACK
                             TRASK
I promise you it will come to that.
And soon.  The strange death of
                 Reverend Herridge.  After his ser-
                 mon denouncing her --'
                              LAURA
                             SAMANTHA
You yourself heard her say she
would settle with him for that --

                             GABRIEL
                 But the scandal...
                              LAURA
                             SAMANTHA
                 There will be no scandal.
                             STRACK
                             TRASK
We have selected four men from the
estate, all of whom have seen proof
                 of her witchcraft...they have sworn
                 to remain silent forever.
                              LAURA
                             SAMANTHA
Gabriel -- if we must, we'll do it
                without you.
                             STRACK
                             TRASK
The evil must be driven from the
land -- before it destroys us all.

                             GABRIEL
                      (a sigh)
You are right.  There is no other
                 way.
                        Strack
Sarah reacts, as Trask moves to the window, looks
       down and nods.

And what Strack actually says in the film is a bit different than what was scripted. Other things are also a bit different, including dropped dialogue which would have implied strongly that Angelique is a witch. The dialogue that's being continued from Scene 118 is, of course, Carlotta's voiceover. And Laura's "must" line does indeed contain "must" when it's delivered in the film, so it has a good chance of being a future installment in the slideshow...

(And as an aside, it's interesting how they broke up Angelique - I've always and everyone I've heard pronounce it has said An-ge-lique - I've never heard it as An-gel-ique - but know knows...)

And similar to hoDS, I used a screen capture from the Laser Disc for NoDS -

- so that it would be in keeping with the dimensions of the screen captures from the original show, but this is what the Blu-ray looks like -

And Ep #139 now joins Eps #1, #5, #8, #12, #120, #124, #136, #138, #189, #198, #210, #217, #478, #659, #667 and #904 as ones without any "must" lines.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #1235 (1841PT[-1967: Ep #219]) - Daphne - 'Catherine, please listen to me because it's very important. Now, I've already said it to Bramwell, and you MUST hear it, too, because I love you both so.'

From "#1234/1235: Robservations 01/09/04: Grisly Discovery"
Please listen to me, Catherine, begs Daphne, it's very important--I've already said it to Bramwell, and you must hear it, too--because I love you both so, and I know you still love each other.  I can't bear to hear you talk like this, please don't, begs Catherine.  I've got to, Daphne insists, because I know how right it would have been for the two of you--you said you've been happy, but you haven't been, not really, and you never will be, without Bramwell
--you were always so much more prepared for life than I was--more than I ever could be...Catherine, she says, suddenly gasping for breath, bring Bramwell to me, please.  Catherine runs to the door--Bramwell, come upstairs!

The Robservations references the quote almost perfectly...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Morgan - 'He MUST have given you quite a blow') was back on August 1st of 2021.

And just a reminder, we've seen notations like "(1841PT[-1967])" before and know it means that an 1841PT quote has been substituted for what should have been a 1967 quote. But this time around "(1841PT[-1967: Ep #219])" means all that plus that the quote should have come from 1967's Ep #219 but that ep doesn't have any "must" lines to quote from. So, with that in mind, it means that Ep #219 now joins Eps #1, #5, #8, #12, #120, #124, #136, #138, #139,#189, #198, #210, #217, #478, #659, #667 and #904 as ones without any "must" lines. Though tomorrow there will finally be the first quote from a new ep - and it's a classic line at that...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #411 (1796) - Barnabas - 'Then, according to the curse, you MUST die.'

From  "#0411/0412: Robservations 03/25/02: Barnabas Rises--and Kills"
He remembers the other part of the curse, and gleefully says, "Anyone who loved me would die."
She failed to lift the curse, and he knows why she tried to stop him from rising--she knew she was going to be the curse's first victim--unless she lied all those times she told him how much she LOVED him! All her powers of witchcraft can't save her now! he cries. She screams her denial of his accusations, but he strangles her, one-handed, against his coffin, and slowly, eyes staring, wide and dead, she falls to the floor.

Quite sadly, the Robservations doesn't even reference the quote. But how it comes up is that Barnabas asks if she was lying when she told him how much she loved him, which she denies and professes her love. And that's when he delivers the quote. That prompts Angelique to beg, "No, Barnabas, please!" To which Barnabas retorts as he grabs Angelique by the throat, "Yes, my dearest." And Angelique screams "No!" as Barnabas insists, "All your powers of witchcraft will not save you now," and he proceeds to strangle her as she chokes and then slumps to the floor...

Such an iconic scene.

And all of this reminds me of the upcoming exchange between Barnabas and Joshua when, after Barnabas warns Joshua that Angelique will stop him from undoing Barnabas' curse and Joshua says he told him she was dead, Barnabas explains, "I told you I killed her, I never said she was dead." Only on a show like DS could that make any sort of sense.  [ghost_wink] [ghost_cheesy]

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #529 (1968) - Vicki - 'That MUST have been why she appeared in this room. To leave this bottle of cologne.'

From  "Robservations 6/20/02 - 529/530 - A Ghost Carries Out His Orders"
Vicki says good night and returns to her room. She spots the bottle of rosewater sitting on the desk and sits down. Touching it, she thinks to herself what a beautiful bottle it is--where did Maggie find? Sniffing it, she pronounces the aroma "lovely, like flowers." Surely Maggie wouldn't mind if she used some. Just as Vicki is about to dab on some of the rosewater, Maggie enters to make sure everything is all right. Vicki assures her she feels fine now--by the way, you mind if she I some cologne? Maggie says it's not hers-she had assumed it was Vicki's. Vicki abruptly replaces the stopper, realizing Angelique had compelled her to use it. She tells Maggie to take it away and smash the bottle!--she almost used it, and she escaped Angelique this time, but how long can she go on escaping her?

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote, but it does reference the circumstances around it because the quote comes up after Vicki realizes she had a strange compulsion to use the cologne and before Vicki tells Maggie to take it away and smash it...

And the quote wasn't actually the one I would have liked to have used from the ep - but when I checked out the one I would have liked to have used, I discovered that Vicki isn't on screen when she delivers it. And since she is on screen when it comes to what I did use, that's why I went with it. But who knows, the quote I originally wanted to use may show up in the slideshow at some point.
