Physically, Liz will be fine, but still thinks she's Naomi and living in the 18th century-she needs treatment, she's mentally ill. She attempted suicide for a reason, and they must find out why or she will try it again.Julia advises a stay at Windcliff, but Roger refuses to commit his sister. Barnabas agrees with Julia, but Roger coldly says he wants to speak to Liz himself and decide. Julia warns him not to question her or let her know of his concern, but Roger angrily says he can deal with Liz himself. Don't stay too long; Liz needs her rest, advises Julia. Roger leaves.
Tim is licking his finger and reading the text. He has four pages left to go. Evan tells him he's done quite enough; he's very impressed with his work. He suggests they "try the card." Yes, says Tim vacantly. They sit at the table. This time, no mistakes, Tim, warns Evan, when the real time comes, all must go without error. Evan deals the cards and talks of a primitive tribe in the Brazilian jungles--the brightest youth is chosen to deliver death to those condemned by the elders--truthfully, isn't our society a primitive tribe, too--you must consider it an honor to be chosen. He orders Tim, who is listening raptly, to pick up his cards. Tim does. Evan talks of the emotional significance attached to cards. The heart signifies romance, for example, the spade--what does a spade mean to Tim? Death! replies Tim. All spades mean that? asks Evan. Yes, says Tim. When you played the four of spades, you had no desire to kill anyone, right? Queries Evan No, says Tim, because it isn't the right card! Evan puts down the queen of spades--is this the right card? Tim rises and pours the brandy again, then adds the poison.
Barnabas joins Liz in the foyer--Julia never will open the box, he says--the interruption shouldn't have stopped her; the spell shouldn't have been that easily broken--there are certain people who we can't absorb; it has to do with their genetic structure--Julia is one of them
Angelique, brandishing clay doll and pin, intones, "Guide my hand carefully. "Do not let it go too deep lest it kill him--guide my hand carefully..." She inserts the needle into the doll's chest. It's my turn to apologize to you, Quentin, says Barnabas. Yes, agrees his cousin, who grabs his chest. What's wrong? asks Barnabas. "My heart," he moans, clutching at the pain.Angelique pushes the pin in more deeply and says, "You must, Quentin, you must!"Quentin collapses to the floor. Barnabas cries out, "For God's sake!" and kneels beside him, worried.
you must go to Shaw and have him finish that horoscope. No, he won't do that, says Carolyn, he doesn't think I'm sincere. We must make him finish that horoscope! insists Barnabas.
Gerard mulls it over and picks up the sheet music--you said you destroyed the sheet music? he asks. Yes, says Quentin. Surely you must have other copies, suggests Gerard. I made exactly two copies, says Quentin, one I gave to Joanna, the other I kept myself. So, you destroyed yours, says Gerard, and this must be Joanna's. That's right, says Quentin--why?--who, what is doing this to me? There are two reasons, says Gerard--either somebody is deliberately trying to upset you, or Joanna is trying to communicate with you--beyond the grave.
As you know, says Liz, I haven't had any permanent help here since Matthew Morgan, for a good many years--and there was a time when the house was full of servants. Yes, Mr. Malloy often spoke of those times, says Sarah--even on the night that he...night he died. She's overcome, and says she's sorry--she can't realize he's gone. We must accept these things, says Liz. He was a good person, he needn't have died, says Sarah. We can't always control accidents, says Liz. You do think it was an accident? asks Sarah. Don't you? asks Liz. I think it could have been prevented, says Sarah--I'm sorry, I came here to speak about a position, not to talk of Mr. Malloy. They a re connected, I suppose, says Liz--Mr. Malloy always spoke so highly of you, when I began considering hiring a housekeeper for Collinwood, you were the first person who came to my mind. I appreciate that, says Sarah.
Collinwood - Quentin returns home, still hearing the sobbing. He sees the wrecked ghost of Dorcas Trilling standing before him. "Murderer!" she accuses, even as he offers to get help for her. He wipes his mouth as she keeps calling him that. Stop! he says--everyone in the house will hear you and know! He jumps forward to grab her, but she disappears, still calling him a murderer!
Natalie finds the Tarot reading very vague, yet disturbing--the lover is surrounded by cards of destruction. Holding her neck, Josette insists Barnabas is in danger; Natalie checks her niece's throat and gasps--blood is running from non-existent wounds in her neck!

Roger tells Julia Cassandra hasn't been that happy there--maybe they should have gotten a place of their own. He's been selfish, he's been so settled here, and his wife knew he didn't want to leave. It's hard for someone new to fit in. Julia adds Cassandra had nothing to do, with Liz in charge. Barnabas comes in while they're talking and shakes his head at Julia. Roger says Cassandra did something especially strange, and takes out the portrait Vicki bought. It's faded almost to white! Roger found it in an empty closet, the vibrant colors faded. It looks like someone left it in the sun, and why would Cassandra lock it away? Roger plans to take it to town and see if it can be restored.
Just noted Roger's comment to Julia about how active Cassandra can be, and Julia said she sure could. LOL! Again, we see Roger showing Barnabas and Julia Angelique's faded portrait. The two co-conspirators exchange glances as Roger blathers about taking it to be restored and how upset Vicki will be.
Liz again suggests the cake. Carolyn makes her puppet say I'm hungry, hungry hungry--"starving to death!" Roger orders her to stop talking that way. Why? asks David. It's a surprise party, Liz reveals. Playfully, Carolyn says she knows what the surprise is. What? asks David. The puppet says it's forbidden. David is frightened. Liz says she had the cake made especially for him.Quentin is suddenly standing there. David says, Quentin, you've come! Quentin, bathed in green light, grins. None of the others besides David can see him, however. He's here, insists David. Liz says we're the only ones here.
Leticia, checking Zachary's pulse, notes, he's getting weaker--I must be doing something all wrong, she worries--oh, Julia, where are you, why don't you come back? She listens to his chest, wailing, please God, his heart has almost stopped--the mask--maybe the mask will help! She places the mask over his face again; his arm drops to his side. He's dying! she cries, I've got to find Julia before it's too late! She runs off, leaving the mask on covering Judah's face.
Calm down, says Barn. I can't, she says hysterically, I've been telling one lie on top of another and soon they will all come crashing down on me, I don't know how much more I can take, and there's no one in the world I can turn to. . ."Except me," he assures her, "except me." (That was hot!) They are face to face. "And you have me, to do whatever has to be done," she says, calmed now. "And now I'll tell you what has to be done," he says. With Magda and Sandor in Boston, you must guard me. "I will," she promises. It will be difficult, but you must do it, he says, handing her a gun--there are winds blowing in all directions, you must be watchful. She promises that, too.
Nicholas says his sister is very young (one of the charming things about her, says Roger), and Nicholas is glad he found a man who appreciates that. They talk about how much the portrait resembles Cassandra, and how weird that a member of the household picked it up in an antique shop. Roger wants her back desperately, which Nicholas doesn't doubt, and hopes she's all right. She'll turn up, they're more than brother and sister, they are great friends, says Nicholas. Cassandra has never mentioned a brother, nor any other family, says Roger, then apologizes. They're close, says Nicholas, and remarks that the portrait fascinates him.

Barn assures her I'll be fine, but I must deal with Dirk in time, and I'm sure I can. What do you want me to do? she asks. Be calm, he says, don't tell Quentin anything--the less he knows, the safer we will be--Quentin can be dangerous, destroy all of us, warns Barnabas. Beth says he's not usually like that, he's just frightened now (an acceptable reason to hit her)? Barnabas, his face inches from hers, says, you are a soft-hearted girl, and in this world of heartless people, you will be hurt. I used to be, she says, until I stood in this very house and pleaded with Quentin not to kill Jenny--but I'm not anymore--I'm hoping you find Dirk quickly, and do whatever he must to silence him. I will, says Barn, I won't allow Dirk to get in the way of what I must do.
