Of course, they had every chance to play this up in 1795--I can imagine some events which result in Joshua exclaiming that he doesn't care if the portrait doesn't look like Josette, it will be Josette anyway, as far as history is concerned...  A much better idea than pretending KLS' Josette looks like that painting.  

What I remember as my favorites are a) when Tim Shaw comes to buy deadly nightshade from her, supposedly to turn lead into gold; a flimsy premise that she quickly destroys with her wit, and b) when she first arrives at the old house with the hand; her banter with Barnabas is especailly hilarious, but gets to the point that none of us know what she is really lying about; a great performance.  

I wonder if Nancy Barrett asked to leave suddenly, and the script was already written?  It could also be that they wanted to make certain that the audience, who might not tune in for several days, knew what was going on. I'd have to see the episodes again before I had any confidence in these suggestions. Those are the thoughts I have as of now, having not watched 1795 in a while.

It might be that she suddenly became unavailable after that episode; it's just really strange that they introduce her and then she is 100% absent during the important story arch from the time before...

That's true--we never saw the cackling skeleton show up in the 49th hexagram.

I heard they shot Dante's Cove season 4 in fall 2009?  It's going to be a long wait if they aren't even in production yet... 

I didn't really understand, while guarding her, why Joe didn't just get in bed and sleep next to Daphne (and I don't mean in an erotic way at all)--surely he then would notice if she moved around or got up, if anything happened to her?  I guess they might have been made uncomfortable by the deputy, but he could have waited outside the door or window instead.  Obviously their arrangement wasn't good because Daphne got away.  

I have to admit I fast-forwarded through much of this episode, as so much of it was verbatim lines/scenes borrowed from DC's past films.  Daphne Collins surely could have been given a better story--but she was just the worst dressed of the bunch and then died in a totally stereotypical way.  But apparently she was very religous from what was said at the funeral?  Maybe they could have incorporated that into her character.   The way vampires are revealed and spoken of here is definitely not evocative, and more suited to an end-game scenario than just the beginning. 

I am grateful that the episode did move beyond the gore of Daphne's death eventually and show Julia's boldness.  

I picked no.  Hopefully Burton and co. can use their own artistic production to depict collinwood/collinsport and all of it's characters, just like was done for the films, the 1991 and 2004 series; it has always been different.  Seaview and the interior sets are very iconic, but they were a symptom of the budget, and were limiting; I'm sure depp/burton would feel ridiculous shooting in an exact carbon copy of the original DS world, and would rather not spend a lot of time trying to blend in things like seaview into their London set.  And frankly, things like special insertions/cameo's that don't neccessarily serve the plot often end up on the cutting room floor anyway once it becomes time to pick a film length.

Yeah, those stairs definitely vanished - watching just the later show, you couldn't infer they were there - they certainly weren't referred to - people seemed to run out the door and directly into the woods all the time, and nobody ever talked about the stairs being slippery or falling down (or being thrown down) them. 

But those early location shots really seem almost mystical after watching just the later years.
