Current Talk '02 I / Food Fight?
« on: May 29, 2002, 10:29:57 PM »
I tape each day's DS episodes so I can go back and watch them on my own schedule and FF through things that don't concern me.

Today I had to rewind and replay that last scene in Adam's cell several times, just to convince myself that Mr. Karlen did, in fact, bite into that chicken leg and spit it out again.

Yeeeeccchhh!   :o

I don't know which I find more appalling and difficult to believe....that a director instructed him to do that...or that he just did it because it seemed like something Willie would do.

In either case, it was more realism than I needed, and more graphic than I wanted to witness.  I adore John Karlen, and I love Willie's whining, jealous tantrums.....the crazier he is the more fun he is to watch......but please, no more food fights!  :P

Current Talk '02 I / DS - X-Files Connection??

Have I been out planting in the sun too long today, or does that photo of Mr. Loomis in the Weekend Montage bear an Unholy resemblance to The Cigarette Smoking Man?  :o

The ramifications could be mind-boggling.

Current Talk '02 I / O. T.....but maybe not.

Is anyone else out there an herb gardener?  Just curious, as I struggle to get plants into the garden later than ever, thanks to the cold weather we've had on the east coast.

But I don't want to be completely off topic....so I'll ask a DS related question:  except for the one instance during 1795 that I'm pretty sure of, does Angelique or anyone else ever use herbal magick on the show?

Rainey, who's headed back outside to play in the dirt!

Okay, so NOW we know what the problem is with Adam.  I don't know why we didn't just ask Roger in the first place, it's so obvious he'd put his finger on it at once.

Poor Adam can't help the way he is.....he's simply... LOWER CLASS!!

Somebody stab that pompous arse with a Waterman pen, please!! >:(

Current Talk '02 I / The Cleavers of Collinsport
« on: May 22, 2002, 07:38:04 PM »
Has anyone got the number for Child Protective Services in Collinsport Maine handy?

I expect Barnabas and Julia to start calling each other "Ward"  and "June" any minute now.

We've got Barnabas speaking to his youngest in that soft but authoritative fatherly voice, and Julia, sweetly smiling at Adam and ignoring the chaos he's causing.

And then there's Willie, doing a perfect impression of Wally Cleaver on drugs.....tormenting the poor "Beav" and whining incessently about having to take care of the little brat.

It would almost be hilarious if it wasn't so damned creepy.....because the "baby" is chained to a wall and has cigarette burns on his hands......sheesh.

On the other hand, how funny was it, watching Adam and Willie playing with the "family jewels"?  :o

I've always thought it was charming that people who aren't registered members on the board, but who visit with us, are referred to as "guests".  It's so welcoming....so homey....so NICE! :)

But I have to admit that charming designation for non-members always seemed a sad contrast to our OWN designation as "Users".  What a pejorative connotation that has....."what a bunch of users"   :P

Now, to my dismay, I see that we're even being identified as "Invisible Users", which has an even LESS charming ring to it.

Couldn't we be called something more in keeping with our actual status?....maybe "Members".....or even better, "Family members"?

Then, if the state of our visibility HAS to be mentioned, we won't sound like hackers or trolls  >:( ?

Current Talk '02 I / Does it get any worse?
« on: May 16, 2002, 11:44:15 PM »
Mother of Pearl....somebody PLEASE promise me that the "Failed Experiment and Demise of Eric Lang" IS, in fact, the very worst acted episode of Dark Shadows!!

I've never seen much of the later stuff.....tell me it's not possible for anything coming up in the next couple of years, to be as bad as what I witnessed today....please?

No Frankenstein flick in the history of movie-making ever had a worse portrayal of "Creating Life" than this, with the flinging, and the flailing, and the gasping and the clutching......Lang tossing himself about like a man in a lifeboat on a rough sea, and Julia shrieking in horror like a first-year nursing student at her first sight of a bed-pan!!!  :o

I'm SOOOO glad they didn't let Willie play any part in this....I can just imagine what antics Mr. Karlen would have added to the wretched piece.

Current Talk '02 I / ".....all's right with the world"
« on: May 15, 2002, 06:45:17 PM »
Willie's at the Old House......All's right with the world!

Yep, have to agree with TLATKLS' opinion that John Karlen was the best actor in the bunch......not that I'm prejudiced or anything.....! ;)

We've had this conversation before, about Nancy Barrett's excellent portrayal of "crazy" as Millicent.....but John Karlen's "crazy" is SO excellent you have to wonder how he does it!!  :o

Willie's shifts from docile and timid,  to demented and overwrought, back to cringing and sly at the same time...all in a handful of scenes....are a superb showcase of the actor's talents, and abilities (IMHO).  It also serves as a showing-UP, I'm afraid, of how narrow and single-note portrayals like Lang really are.

Best of all is just imagining how much FUN John Karlen MUST have had playing this lunatic who keeps shifting gears from pathetic and sweet to barking mad! [crazd]

GAWD...I'VE MISSED HIM!!!!!

Rainey, who's just wondering: Did anyone else who acted on this show ever win an Emmy, a Tony or an Academy Award?......Scholars?....I'm sure one of you has this info!

Current Talk '02 I / What is that thing: Part II
« on: April 28, 2002, 05:24:17 AM »
Am I crazy, MB, or did you deliberately cut off the "Reply" option on my thread so no one would tell me what the heck that thing is?  ?!?

Patience?  Where did you get the idea that I was patient?  :(

And while I'm bitchin' over here,  you couldn't find ONE picture of Willie for the 1968 montage?!!  >:(

Okay, I get it....this is the penalty for asking one too many stupid questions!!  :'(

[hello]  Applause for the ever-changing quotes from the "Current Topics"!  It's nice to catch things we may not have gotten the first time around....and it looks MUCH better than the last "improvement" from the Graphic Arts Department!

Sorry, MB...couldn't resist [lghy]

Thanks for this new bit of info on the message bar, MB (it had to be you, didn't it MB?)....I'm lucky I remember my name every morning....remembering how many messages I have is WAY more than I can handle.  Now I won't have to go looking to see if something's been added!  ;D

Current Talk '02 I / Tell me a story......
« on: March 30, 2002, 05:00:05 AM »
Now that we all seem to have recovered from the heat of discussion about how to improve upon the DS Festivals, I would like to ask a question of those who've attended them (as someone who never has):

What was the best, or funniest, or nicest thing you've ever seen take place at a Fest?  Please, I don't want to hear about who showed up drunk or the one where a fist fight broke out over an autograph.

Embarassing moments are okay, so long as they're amusing...but humiliating incidents are not. I want to hear your fondest memories of encountering these folks we're all so crazy about.

Anybody?.....(Ringo, you automatically get a page and a half for yourself and TLATKLS.)  ;)

Testing. 1, 2, 3... / Slowing down?
« on: March 24, 2002, 05:21:25 AM »
Perhaps it's just me, but I don't think so:  things seem to be slowing down on this site.  I'm on a cable connection and things usually move pretty quickly.

But just in the last couple of days it seems to take longer to navigate my way around the site than it used to.

Is it just me or has anyone else noted/commented on this problem?   ?!?  Actually, it's not a problem at all, just a minor annoyance.  :(
