Current Talk '17 II / Re: Auction for Overpriced DS BooksI
« on: December 04, 2017, 02:15:53 AM »
Well, that listing is certainly "interesting," Doctor!  There's this weird phenomenon I've noticed with online used book prices in recent years (it might have started as long ago as ten years back, now--I haven't kept track).  This is where a vendor lists a copy of a book that isn't all that rare but is somehow perceived to be "hot"--but sometimes, only in a fairly obscure niche market.  For instance, this morning I was on Amazon and I saw some old Sax Rohmer paperbacks from the 1950s listed at around $450 apiece.  What I recall having been told years ago is that this means that if you "buy" the book, the vendor will then search for a copy for you.  And yes, you pay shipping.

Thankfully, there are still plenty of more reputable book dealers who don't engage in this kind of scamming.  I'm not sure that there's anyone to appeal to about this kind of thing since I don't think the used book sector is at all regulated. "Buyer beware."

Still, somebody "auctioning" a lot of fairly commonplace Ross paperbacks in such an extreme fashion on eBay sets a new benchmark.  As I said... interesting.

Best, G.

I remember Van Helsing in the book saying that Dracula could be abroad at noontime.  And I do remember the scene where they confront him during the day.  It was really well dramatized in the Louis Jourdan version (filmed for BBC TV broadcast in the late Seventies--often cited as one of the most accurate attempts to film this often-filmed book).

Jonathan Frid's hometown, I believe... they really should have ALL the Barnabas discs to honor the native son!

Fans,

This is a video of Donna McKechnie dancing the lead in the big "Turkey Lurkey" production number from the Bacharach/David musical PROMISES PROMISES.  That was on B'way in 1969 (I've always read it was a big flop, but I haven't personally researched the production history), and I think it says here that Donna was an original cast member--so, presumably, this was the gig that preceded (or was perhaps coterminous with) her time on DS:

This number is perhaps the ultimate expression of what I think of as the late Sixties, early Seventies "Bob Fosse on amphetamines" school of B'way choreography--I don't know who designed the actual moves here.

Whatever one may think of Donna's acting ability, this is proof of what a phenomenally gifted dancer she is. I have heard she's really nice, too.

DS fans with an interest in Cornwall, pirates, shipwrecks, and Witchcraft might enjoy this episode of a Sky TV series from last year:

I was amused in the smugglers' pub when there was a rousing chorus of "What shall we do with a drunken sailor?"  The Blue Whale tradition continues!

Both Grayson and Nancy should have been given Emmies that year.

Sheer brilliance!

MB, I hope you didn't miss the THRILLER episode "The Remarkable Mrs Hawk," with Jo van Fleet in the title role and John Carradine.  Great fun, and perhaps not all that reminiscent of DS, but full of Witchy, sardonic humor.  I can imagine you loving it.

Happy Halloween!

A vengeful 18th century Witch and a mysterious wig that may have a curse on it are just two ways in which this episode of BORIS KARLOFF'S THRILLER, "A Wig for Miss Devore," seems to foreshadow elements of DS:

Originally aired in 1961... it's become a favorite Halloween treat of mine over the years.

Oh, the depravity.

MB, the pricing of the Dan Ross paperbacks in my area was the same as what you cite.  All of mine long ago went the way of all flesh.  I think I may still have one on a DS shelf purely as a memento.

Uncle Roger, that is a fascinating snapshot of Charlton Press.  In that fab literary capital, Derby CT.  LOL!

cheers, G.

Wasn't there another outfit called Charlton that did some horror themed comics in the 1960s?  That is what I remember,at any rate.

Those Dell DRACULA and FRANKENSTEIN covers are so cool...

I know I should just go way back and look, but I keep thinking that the blouse Maggie wore for this Blue Whale dinner scene was the same as the blouse she wore in those cut scenes from the start of the film.

Maybe tonight I'll go back to the start of the thread and see if I'm hallucinating again.  And next I will ponder whether the blouse was "by Junior Sophisticates." LOL

Danny Horn snarks his way through an account of the hoDS publicity campaign.  Mildly amusing.

Interesting.  There are much better photos of Jonathan crowning Miss Vampire than the one used here, but the ones I have seen were black and white and this is color, so perhaps that's why this was used.  I had never seen this shot before.
