Current Talk '02 I / Re: I gotta stand up for Angelique
« on: March 11, 2002, 07:14:46 PM »
Have to agree with whomever said that Melanie & Kendrick are the true love match of PT1841. I just love watching those scenes between John Karlen and Nancy Barrett (although I love watching Karlen's scenes with Grayson Hall even more--those two had some fabulous moments in an otherwise rather confused and lacklustre storyline!).

As for dear Angelique, I just love watching her at this point.  Even though Cassandra is my favorite Lara Parker character on the show (and I really consider Cassandra to be separate from Angelique--"WHY are you calling me by that name???" bat bat, quiver quiver, pout pout), the ORIGINAL 1795 Angelique is really more interesting as a character than the latter variations (though again, I love watching her waltz in and out of the endless 1897 storyline--and who doesn't love her little turn as Mrs Sky Rumson--gods, I'd love to have been a fly on the wall when Mrs. Sky presided over the Little Windward Island Ladies Auxiliary Shriners League luncheon!).

At this point in the scheme of things, Ange doesn't just crave Barn's body and soul, she also lusts for the privileges that she sees coming her way when she assumes her rightful place as Mrs. Barnabas Collins.  If she ever said that she would have been content to have been Barnabas' mistress while Josette was his wife, she was deluding both herself and anyone within listening range.  She wants the whole kit and caboodle--the dresses, the carriages, the silver, the fawning admiration of those less favored by society.  And, at this point, she also wants to see Josette humiliated and groveling.

I love to watch her, but I'd hardly say I admire her.

Best,  Steve

Doesn't this new Board RULE?

Bob, your comments are always a highlight of my visits to this board. What fun!

I personally think the skull belonged to Amanda Harris' Great Aunt Hortense. There was clearly a thing for ratty hairpieces that ran in that family. Plus the jawline shows that Hortense liked to chatter almost as much as Amanda.

Altogether now, one two three: "Qu-wu-wu-woo-woo-wooo-woooooooooENNNNNNTINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!"

Marketing--you mean they actually MARKET the series?

I thought they just randomly sold the tapes whenever they happened to have them lying around....

I noticed that DS was conspicuously absent from the new coupon I got from MPI yesterday. While I appreciate the coupons, they obviously don't know what MY major interest in the co. is.

Anybody hear anything definite about what's going to be on the new tape? It would be nice if they included some unusual Grayson item for us diehards out here. If it is just scenes from the latest Festival intercut with the usual montages from the series, I think I will skip it (though the fact that the Festival was at the WTC Marriott certainly will give a poignant flavor to any footage filmed there).

Dear Sam Evans,

I'm sure you'll never see this reply, but, just in case you do visit again, here's my stab at answering your question.

We're not allowed to discuss gossip about the DS actors here, but, as it happens, from what I have read Alexandra and David had a perfectly happy working relationship. I think that there are several reasons why there are hardly any Vicki/David scenes in the 1968 storyline:

(1) Vicki was no longer the focal point of the series; she was a subsidiary focal point, and her story revolved around Barnabas and the dreadful Jeff Clark storyline. Given that Vicki only got so much air time in a season where there was an awful lot going on, she was more likely to have scenes with Barnabas, Jeff, or Liz rather than David.
(2) David was even less in evidence than Vicki during 1968. He doesn't become central to the storyline again until the events leading up to Quentin's first appearance. David H seems to have been taking a hiatus from the series during the storyline currently aired--I believe he doesn't appear at all for several months (and Daniel Collins practically qualifies as a cameo appearance in 1795).

This is the best I can come up with to answer your question. I do believe that Vicki and David are in a couple of scenes together in 1968, but, so far as I can recall, never one on one (or very rarely if that).

Today's episodes are some of my favorites of this particular storyline. Angelique's emotions as she casts her first spell are wonderfully present in Lara Parker's acting. I thought she was fabulous. And KLS made a great entrance as Josette, I thought.

I obviously did not see today's broadcast (since I am at work) and it's been at least a couple years since I last ran these, so I'll refrain from further comment.

When Angelique holds up that toy soldier and purrs, "You'll do, little doll," I feel ice running down my back! It is interesting, too, to see that she is not really in complete control of her own powers (something that often happens in real-life spellcraft).

This movie has been shown several times locally, but I've missed it. It did sound interesting, although I heard it was awash in gratuitous violence, which made me wonder whether I would enjoy it.

I'm sorry to see you diss Hanna-Barbera. There was so much more to them than the Flintstones. Jonny Quest, the original 1964 episodes, had some of the best animation ever produced in America, I thought. The remake (as usual with these things) was unwatchable.

Dear Luciaphil,

That's interesting that you say that Angelique might have been hoping at this particular point to have Barnabas carrying on his liaison with her while maintaining Josette as his wife. Not too many weeks down the line, she informs Ben that she's going to have everything that Josette has, from fine dresses and a privileged life to Barnabas, as she has intended all along. I thought it made the character more believable and of her time that she craved the status and the material blandishments that would come with life as Mrs. Barnabas Collins. As I see her, Angelique ALWAYS wanted to be Barnabas' wife, and she certainly insisted upon that title repeatedly in later years!

Agree that Lara Parker and Jonathan Frid had wonderful onscreen chemistry together. The passion that comes through in their playing can so believably lead one to understand how these two could both love AND hate one another down through the centuries.

Hi Julia,

Natalie wears the same outfit one more time, in the episode where everybody moves to the New House, and you do get to see the costume in color then.

I also wish they could find the color original tape of this episode, but I fear it may have been destroyed inadvertently. I think that in some cases where we don't have the original tapes, it was because of the custom of recycling videotape in those days.

Oops, I goofed. Abigail was played in 1991 by Julianna McCarthy (who has quite a string of horror films listed under her name on IMDB). I'm sure I made the mistake because in the actual series Abigail was of course played by the divine Clarice Blackburn.

PS. Wait for dear Aunt Abigail's acid comments upon Miss Winters' wardrobe tomorrow! In Hawaii, her dress choice would be banned as "clothing that inspires devil worship." One of the few moments I actually enjoyed of the 1991 "remake" was the fabulous Barbara Blackburn's performance of the lines where Abigail describes the Satanic symbols upon the laundry label on Vicki's clothing. Great stuff.

That's interesting about Ron Sproat having done the actual writing for the Julia solo episode. I'd forgotten that. From what I understand, the 3 writers would get together and plot the shows, then divide up who would do the various scripts. Dan Curtis often took a hand in determining how the plot should go. Sam mentioned in a printed interview that he would try to protest some of the more outlandish plot developments and Dan would look at him and say, "Well, do you want to write the show, or don't you? You know, I can find other people to write the show."

At some point, too, some of Gordon Russell's scripts were really being written by Violet Welles. She started out as his ghost writer, and Dan liked her stuff so he made her an official writer after Sproat left (I think). But at the end of the show, Russell had Welles writing the scripts that had his name on them ... or so she stated in an interview printed in a zine.

The reason Sam Hall gave for why the "Grayson solo" happened was that Dan Curtis did not want to use more than X number of actors per week total and because of having too many actors in other episodes around that time, he wanted to do at least one show with as few actors as possible.

Since they needed practically the entire cast for the seance episode which happened the same week as this, I buy Sam's explanation, disingenuous though it may appear. It is certainly true that after the very early weeks of DS, they never seem to have more than 7 actors in one day's show. I think there was an episode in the late Summer or early Fall of 1968, however, that had 9. Others who are more up on the statistics of the show than I would know this.

Since Grayson had been such a hit in "The Human Voice," which she did perform solo, and since at various times in her career she repeatedly did long solo pieces letter-perfect as a tour de force, I'm assuming that Sam thought it might be fun to have her do something like this as part of the storyline where Barnabas is trying to drive her out of her mind. It certainly does seem like nothing else seen on the television of the time!

As for Grayson's relationship with other cast members--she was friendly off the set with Joan Bennett, Nancy Barrett, Selby, Thayer David (the woman he married, Valerie French, was a friend of G's), Alexandra ... I could lengthen the list but I think I've made my point. She was a woman of unusual energies who clearly could be "high maintenance" as a friend. She was not one to refrain from speaking her mind if she felt it was warranted.

Hi Julia,

From some info given to me in confidence by a person who had spoken with a DS cast member, I don't think (at this point, certainly) Grayson was making any more than the other cast members (apart from Joan, of course). I don't know for sure; the only way to know would be either to interview whomever was her agent back then (if that person is still alive) or if DC still has the contracts (which I doubt).

John, if you see this, Grayson did an entire season at Hedgerow in the Summer of '61. They did the Cocktail Party by T. S. Eliot, and one of Sam's plays ... can't recall offhand what else. Wouldn't it be fabulous to see her in those roles?

Believe it or not, all the Hedgerow archives are up here at the Boston U. Theatre Collection. That is cool that you live so close to the theatre.

For those who ever admired/lusted after Kevin Smith who portrayed Ares the War God (and Ares' twin brother the Lord of Love, in white tights that left John Travolta looking like chopped liver) on the Xena/Hercules megalith, I read today that Mr. Smith died after an accident while visiting a set in Beijing. Apparently he was climbing up a tower and fell. He was 38.

This kind of thing just kills me. Mr. Smith came across on the screen as sexy, funny, and very sweet. Tributes from coworkers who describe him across the board as the perfect gent have been pouring in. It's just not fair, y'know? I'd looked forward to seeing him do something worthy of his talents (while his costumes on XenaHerc were boss, the scripts were generally soggy at best), and now that hope is dashed. I feel for his family, as well.

Just wanted to share this sad news for those who care.

Wowee-zowee, I can't let today's montage pass without a very special tip of my hat to the Mysterious Benefactor. You've really outdone yourself! Those shots of Julia FREAKIN' OUT have got to rate as some of the best captures I've ever seen of Grayson Hall's unique body language. FABULOUS!

It also reminds me why I'm certain that Sam and Grayson concocted a lot of this out of Jean Cocteau's one woman play, The Human Voice, in which Grayson won rave reviews when she performed it at the Hedgerow Theatre (near Philadelphia) in 1961.

Can't wait to go home and pull my tape of these shows off the shelf. Truly quality television!

Thank you again Mr. Mysterious. We love you!
