This is an interesting, sensitively written article about Jeff Rice by Mark Dawidziak. Apparently the lawsuit happened around the time of the Night Stalker series.

https://www.cleveland.com/tv-blog/index.ssf/2015/08/jeff_rice_creator_the_night_stalker_had_an_enormous_influence_on_horror_entertainment.html

The Las Vegas element was another strand that set Jeff Rice's work apart. The Progeny novel was set in DC which does seem like the perfect home for a vampire on the make.

Mysterioso darling,

I do not think Progeny of the Adder was ever filmed. It seems pretty obvious that Jeff Rice, the original author of the story on which Night Stalker was based, must have read the 1965 book. What is quite original in Rice's story is the character of Kolchak--there is nobody at all like him in the Whitten book. In fact, according to the author of the article I read, characterization was not at all Whitten's strong suit.

I checked the internet and it turns out that Jeff Rice launched his own lawsuit against ABC before the movie was finished. It appears to have been settled out of court. The motive for the suit was the fact that the rights to the original story by Rice were sold without his permission. The world is a devious, harsh place.

According to the article in the magazine Pulp Horror (issue 5) about Whitten, a fun detail of the Progeny of the Adder plot is that when the police investigate the vampire's home, among the things they find are "broken mirrors, spray tan, and toothbrushes that have been worn down." The latter two items tickled me.

Fans of the original 1972 NIGHT STALKER film might find this of interest:

Novelist Leslie Whitten tried to sue (ABC or Dan Curtis, I believe) but according to a brief note in an article about this I just read, had to drop the suit.

Jasmine posted this update a couple of hours ago on social media:

"[Denise is] fully awake at this point. We aren't sure if she understands much yet. But she is still reacting to and responding to certain commands. She's even moving her right hand and squeezing with it now.

And the greatest news, she can stand up on her own and she said words today. When asked by the occupational therapist if she wanted her hair brushed she said loud and clear, "No."

When we were just on a video call with Shane she said, "Bye" at the end of the call. The entire time we've been here she's been trying to talk. She's trying to have a full conversion but the words aren't there yet."

There was more of the update, but it was personal sharing from Jasmine about Denise's agitated state of mind. This is unfortunately typical of people who are in recovery from this kind of event. Let's hope and pray Denise continues to make progress.

Best wishes, G.

Jasmine Nickerson reported yesterday:
[Denise] has finally been moved out of the ICU into a new part of the hospital for "high-risk," but not "intensive-risk" patients.
She's stable but still fidgety with the new contraptions in and on her, and unfortunately they pose a greater risk if she rips them out. Josh is very worried and had had a rough day emotionally with processing everything.  (end)

I can post updates here when I think to check for them. I haven't seen anything today.

There was something that I think had been posted Friday evening about Denise having surgery. The procedure is supposed to help with her recovery. Keep those prayers going.

Just in case this is of interest to people--I don't know that this warrants starting a new thread:

I really hope somebody out there is fundraising for the medical bills separately from the link posted in the article I looked at yesterday. The fundraiser was closed and the amount raised was only around $2500 or less. Which is a drop in the bucket for typical hospital bills in the US.

Hope Denise's son and his spouse are getting good support and advice. It sounds like a very challenging, difficult situation. And heartbreaking, of course.

That sounds like a lovely book. I never watched Happy Days so I mainly remember Marion Ross as the nemesis of "Hekatite" Witch Vivian in the (in)famous 1981 TV movie, MIDNIGHT OFFERINGS--which I never saw until sometime around 2006. It has since become a cult favorite and I've turned many of my friends onto the film. (It's on the Tube of You.)

Last night's update was pretty good. It seems likely now that she will make a good recovery.

I somehow thought the interview was done in 2016, presumably intended as a 50th anniversary feature.

LOL! That opening voiceover sounded like what the result would have been if "Marilyn" Ross had been commissioned to write a 1991 DS book.

It did give me a giggle...

Not a free story, but fans of both Selby and TLATKLS might be interested in this one:

Just my personal opinion--several pages ago, the writing of this story went down the drain and never came back.

Just awful rubbish. But perhaps somebody out there enjoyed it.

Nice photo of Bella Heathcote (who I wouldn't have recognized at all) with sexy co-star Jack Reynor here:

I'd actually watch at least the first episode if this were at all available to me, just out of curiosity. But all there are available on platforms I can access, so far as I am aware, are a couple of trailers and clips on Youtube.

cheers, G.
