Oh yes, Francis Swann became my favorite about a year ago when I watched these shows.  His work is really fabulous.  Literate, layered, sharp.

I really must have a look at some of his novels on eBay...

Again, wonderful work from you with this latest batch of comments.  Regarding Liz on the piano, from what I can recall, she usually played Chopin.

Isn't the Gilmore Boarding House show a big hit?  It seems to me that the recent references to DS on that series mentioned here a few weeks back point to DS' firm position in the ranks of hip, cult, vintage pop culture.  Somewhere in between Twilight Zone and Boris Karloff's Thriller, perhaps.

I'd say that the fact that the series has been in print continuously on home entertainment VHS since the early 90s, plus the fact that the DVD sets appear to be sellling very briskly, shows that the show is far from in danger of disappearing.  In fact, since the start of the 1990s, DS has been more widely visible than at any time since the late Sixties--at least, to my eye (I was living abroad throughout much of the 1980s).

Well, Captain, I'm not sure I'd entirely agree with you in that analysis, insofar as the respective moral attributes of Barnabas and Quentin are concerned.

After all,
Barnabas killed Carl, his own flesh and blood, when the latter learned his secret, and did it fairly callously.  If Barnabas felt remorse for having killed Carl, I don't recall having seen it.  Dirk may not have been the most likeable fellow in the world, but he was also sacrificed in a coldly Machiavellian manoeuvre that wound up backfiring on Barn.

As for Quentin, he did offer to sacrifice himself to save Jamison, so he was not entirely free of compassion.
Glad to hear you enjoy the 1897 story.  It's the top favorite of many fans.

I quote from the published credits on us.imdb.com

Boris Karloff ....  Im-ho-tep, alias Ardath Bey

yep, somebody definitely has WAY too much time on his hands today.

Hmmmm... thanks for that link, darling Mysterioso.

It reminds me there was definitely SOMETHING hinted at there that I WANTED to see, but never did... on DS...

DS to DA!

once again, you've produced work of truly *stunning* beauty.  Congratulations!

I'm far from a Quentin/Daphne 'shipper, but I still found this video a heartwarming tribute to the characters and their shared love.

I have to say, I'm really, REALLY glad they didn't make Jackson wear those silly black bows after Daphne stopped being a ghost.

Sorry to correct yet again, but the Karloff character in The Mummy was ARDATH BEY (not ArDETH).

I've seen that movie so many times I can recite practically every word of dialogue in it.  And I STILL enjoy watching it!  Yeah, I really should get a life.

Wow, Penny, that Frenchy drawing is STUNNING.

If you hadn't said so, I wouldn't have know what "Levia-kitty" was meant to be.

Y'know, I vaguely recall seeing that picture Back in the Day.  I was quite the slavish reader of !6, Tiger Beat, and the rest of them... just because of their DS coverage.

If you like Chris Pennock, there are some *gorgeous* screen captures the Mysterious Benefactor did way back of Jeb in his one shirtless scene, the one where he's wearing those pj bottoms (too bad they didn't just slip off... hee hee!).  I thought CP was a sexy mofo back then, but that seems to be a minority view.

My version of an actual Leviathan creature on DS is very similar to the re-enactment of Bela Lugosi's struggle with the giant squid in "Ed Wood."

So, yeah, I have to agree with Ian that it's just as well they blue-pencilled it--although NOTHING could have kept me from becoming the Dark Shadows fanatic I remain to this day!

Well, the best known example is the Sam Hall TV Guide article in which he wrote up his story notes for what would have been the wrap-up months of the series.

I think it would have been very cool to have brought Count Petofi back, but I believe most fans had had more than enough of the character well before the conclusion of the 1897 storyline.

"Barnabas!  Barnabas, it's a postcard from Cassandra!  Barnabas, she says she's living the good life in Aruba and is GLAD WE'RE NOT THERE!  Barnabas!  Barnabas, what are we gonna do????"

Whenever I watch this past little series of shows, I also wonder why they decided NOT to cast Ned Calder.  Despite that dreadful lawyer's huffing and puffing, I think having Ned on the scene would have added an interesting element to the mix--particularly if he pursued his old flame with Liz, *and* we were allowed to see she was tempted.

I guess the Frank Garner character took on at least some of the stuff the Ned character would have done.

I think these two episodes may have been among the best in the series, just in terms of pacing, acting, etc.  Was either written by Francis Swann?

Excellent work, my dear, as always.

Your Fan,

Steve

That scene between Stokes and Julia, late in the Adam storyline, where they're in the drawing room at Collinwood with a chessboard between them, really sums up well the ambiguities of what the writers reveal regarding what Stokes does and does not know.

It's a really well written scene, played with deft finesse by a pair of true masters of their craft--Grayson Hall and Thayer David.

Given what I had heard, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed James Hall's performance in his 4 or 5 episodes when I screened them last year.  Despite his difficulties with the line readings, I thought he had an interesting take on Willie.  Very creepy--just watching him in his scenes with Vicki practically had me biting my nails (not something one is wont to do under ordinary circumstances).

I dont't think there's any question as to who is the more skilled thespian of the two.  Karlen obviously stands head and shoulders above his predecessor. But I also don't think it diminishes Karlen's achievement in the slightest to note that Hall did a better job with the role than common fan wisdom would state.

Someone asked one of the surviving cast members in NYC last year while Hall was replaced, and she answered that he had a drinking problem and was told he would have to go "but in a nice way."  (laughter from both the stage and the audience)
