Current Talk '08 II / Today's Capture--Episode #612
« on: October 30, 2008, 04:58:14 PM »
I wish I could think of something to write about today's capture that *wasn't* obscene.

Minus the caption, it looks as if Harry stepped in something nasty that he needs to scrape off his shoe before his Mom catches sight of it.

How, um, special to have the Thespian Genius of Craig Slocum to light our day on the eve of Halloween!

Cheers!

Current Talk '08 II / Barnabas, Roxanne and Julia
« on: October 30, 2008, 03:39:46 PM »
Fans,

Thanks to an incredible sale on Amazon Vendor, I found DVD set #22 (for seventeen bucks plus change!) and it arrived last night.  While test driving the discs, I revisited the episode where
Barnabas met Regular Time Roxanne Drew for the first time at Sebastian Shaw's parlor.  I'd forgotten how poignantly Frid portrayed Barnabas' mingled joy and desire at meeting "his" Roxanne again.  I found myself thinking, "he's overjoyed to see her, and some girls would think he's a really creepy old man, but she's being nice."

I have to admit I Laughed Out Loud at the scene where Julia picked up the phone on Roxanne's call to cancel her dinner plans with Barnabas.  The look on Julia's face was truly priceless!  And then, the scene where Barnabas comes in like a little boy with a new candy cane and Julia is trying so hard not to roll her eyes.  The dialogue actually gave her the line, "Barnabas, why does it always have to be me who tries to tell you ..."   Another priceless moment.

I have to admit that the crowning gem was when Barnabas, with visibly controlled anger, informed her:  "Julia, I am seldom wrong about people!"  It was a wonder Julia didn't choke on her reassuring-therapist response "That's true ..."
I think of the Summer of 1970 as a less-than-successful period in the show's history, but this episode certainly was memorable ... and fun!

cheers, Gothick

When serving cucumber sandwiches (or watercress sandwiches, or bread and butter) for a formal tea, the cook should ALWAYS remove the crusts from the bread.  This may not have been written down by Mrs. Vanderbilt simply because it was something people were expected to know.

I liked the scene with the Ouija board.

The business with the fan may have been silly, but I thought Barbara Steele looked ravishing in black lace.

Unfortunately "witch hunts" are more popular than ever in Nigeria today in 2008.  There was a link making the rounds on the Nets a few months ago about this.

The pattern of unscrupulous ministers inciting mob hysteria against supposed "witches" in the community sounds frighteningly similar to what happened in Salem, only on a much bigger and more violent scale.

Dear DLA, many thanks for pointing us to Craig's note about talking to Humbert in '06.  I wonder whether Craig ever had the chance to finish writing up the interview.    Writing about this is making me miss Craig all over again.  What a sweetheart he was.

There's an update on Humbert's page on IMDB indicating that he lost his daughter Jenny in June of this year.  There is a note from a friend of the family's who attended her memorial service in Studio City, Cali.  It is said there that Humbert at the time was too ill to travel and was unable to attend--heartbreaking.

Craig expresses surprise that Humbert did stand-up comedy as an armed forces entertainer early in life, but I am not surprised at all. There was always such delicious wit lurking under the surface in his portrayals, particularly 1968 Nicholas which is my favorite role of his.

Great selection of links, Retzev!

Did you see this music video from the early 1980s with Steele photos and footage to the song "The Eyes of Barbara Steele" as performed by a New Wave Munich band Boom-Boom Chuck and the Psychedelic Berrys?

There are more fabulous Barbara Steele clips that come up if you explore further, as well!

It only "popped up" because I was looking at Peter Vaughan's page on IMDB and Vaughan was among those cast in that ill-fated venture.

I believe Peter Vaughan is retired now, although he may occasionally do roles in television projects done in London studios.  I just enjoyed his bravura performance as the treacherous Horace Dorrington in two episodes on a greymarket set of Rivals of Sherlock Holmes (1971-73) DVDs I acquired from a dealer in England.

Here's a trailer for The Crimson Cult (aka Curse of the Crimson Altar--search "Crimson Altar" for more clips) with a couple of glimpses of Barbara Steele in her green Witch costume--garish and fab!

Other links for great 1970s movies such as The Blood on Satan's Claw and Dracula A. D. 1972 pop up on this page, too, for those in a mood for some Halloween diversion.

Oops!  I double-checked that IMDB clipping and it proved to date to 8 years ago and a Terry Gilliam movie that Depp was involved with back then.  So sorry for any confusion I may have created.

Interestingly, Dark Shadows is now on Depp's main page on the site with a projected 2011 release date listed.

I'm really surprised not to see Barnabas and Josette listed as a couple in this survey.  If you look back at the early to middle years of organized DS fandom (I'm thinking 1970s-1980s-into the early 1990s here), B & J meant Barn/Josette, PERIOD.  People made and sold a number of Barn/Josette accessories--I think one enterprising fan had bought up a bunch of little pink heart shaped pillows and embroidered them with lacy frills and the linked names of the happy couple.

It's nice to see that Langley and Phoebe were remembered.  I never got to see any of that, but I know that was a wonderful time for both Louis Edmonds and Ruth Warrick, judging from interviews I have read with both.

As I write this post, I'm recalling one of my favorite scenes in all DS, when Mrs. Cassandra Collins is paying a friendly neighborhood call to dear cousin Barnabas (*wry grin*) and finally blurts out to Barnabas:  "Oh, why couldn't you ever love me?"  He tells her flatly:  "I loved Josette!"  Her riposte:  "I hate you!"  And his reply:  "You've proven that!"

cheers, G.

Thanks to Jimbo for the wonderful account of your meeting with Barbara Steele.  I would love to hear more, but I imagine that you've already pretty much shared all there was to share.

The timeline she gives for the shooting and distro of Depp Shadows sounds realistic to me.

I came to look at this thread because I saw a news item somewhere a couple of days ago about a movie that Johnny Depp "and his girlfriend" (I'm not sure what was meant by this, since I thought that Depp lived with his wife of many years in France) have been working on has been delayed due to an injury suffered by a cast member.  I happened to see this because an elderly British character actor I admire is in the cast and there was a link to the item from his IMDB page.  It sounds as if Johnny Depp's schedule may be on the verge of further re-arrangement.

Although I am not a fan of 1991 Dark Shadows, knowing that Barbara Steele was going to attend a DS Festival would make that event much more interesting and attractive to me.  As I have stated a number of times in the past, I enjoyed Steele's work on the 1991 Shadows enormously and have a huge admiration for her verve and artistry as an actress.

What a wonderful short portrait.  I've read many interviews with her over the years, so am well aware that this one is just glancing over the surface of the very complex entity that is Barbara Steele.

Interestingly, Grayson Hall made almost the same comment about "duality" in a fan interview in the early 1980s when a fan was asking her about Julia's complicity in the murder of Dave Woodard.

I wish that Barbara's 1966 film An Angel for Satan would get a proper DVD release.  Sinister Cinema or one of those firms has a version that is Italian-only.  A small firm that specializations in exploitation titles is working on a restored release of Nightmare Castle which will be great if they can pull it off.  The complete print was found in a vault in Italy--very appropriate for a Barbara Steele film.

Another one that is little known and I think has some surprisngly effective and even touching moments is The Crimson Cult, filmed in 1968 but delayed in release for some years.

Best wishes,

G.

My Dear!  How very KIND of you to wish our dear Lara a happy 71! *wink*

My own Mom was born in Nov. of 1937, about one month later than Lara.  It's very weird to think of my mom as a month YOUNGER than Angelique Collins!

Happy 71 to Lara!
