Dear Cousin Barnabas,

just keep repeating to yourself those magic words--"Warners greenlights Night of DS restoration project..."

It's the main thing I focus on at this point.  I'm quite prepared to hear next that they're going to cast the whole Depp Shadows thing with Muppets at this point.  (particularly if the new Muppet movie really takes off--fancy Miss Piggy as Angelique?)

The three things the suits care about are sales, sales, and sales.  Oh and merchandising.

That's wonderful news, Midnite.  I surely wish that Netflix carried Sinister Cinema releases!

A friend says you use something he calls "polarized" glasses to watch now with the new technique. It sounds like a complete upgrade from the old 3 D.

To be blunt, I find it all a crashing bore.  But for those who are into it--the "industry" is jumping on this bigtime.

Another of Kaplan's habits was to make the rounds of the dressing rooms immediately after the day's taping and offer grades to various actors on their performances.

Although those I have heard mention him always spoke of him with fondness, you get the impression that he could be a real s.o.b.

Again, I'm seeing a sequence that has always been one of the few highlights of hoDS through new eyes thanks to the current wonderful selection of captures.

Unlike many other parts of the movie, this scene did present a pivotal moment in the drama where notes of character came strongly to the fore, despite DC's determination to focus on action, blood, and carnage as much as possible.

Wonderful series, MB.  Thanks!

I know I've mentioned this before, but for what it's worth, Violet Welles in the one interview she did with a fan (published in Dale Clark's wonderful, much-missed Inside the Old House zine) mentioned coming back to write for DS at the end of the series.  She had started out ghost-writing (ha ha) for Gordon Russell on the show and I suspect that whenever Gordon got a credit for an episode in 1971, it was actually Violet's work.  That accounts for how good some of the dialogue in the PT 1841 episodes is, even when the actual plot fails to make sense or hold up.

I just adore the Julia capture posted here!  What a treat! Thanks so much, MB!

In her first book (which is now long out of print) KLS complained (sort of) that Henry Kaplan always wanted "more, bigger, louder" reactions from the actors.  He would apparently yell "Tran-sish!" which meant the actor needed to convey a "transition" in a non-verbal way.

I love how Willie pouts thoughtfully at one point while talking to Barn...

I just love Grayson's look as Julia in today's photograph.  Such understated, distinctive glamour.

Happy Birthday, Misterioso Dahling!  May your day be a delightful panoply of treats and delights... oh, and of course, tapioca pudding!  *wink*

Warmly,

The new TV Guide article (from their soaps column) has a line about Frid still playing Barnabas 39 years after the show went off the air on the Big Finish recordings.

My guess is that this statement, which is completely untrue, came out from the reporter visiting a website and looking at the first CD, which I think did have a picture of Jonathan (as Barnabas, of course) on the cover, even though his voice did not appear on the recording.

We do live in the age of spin but implying, as the statement does, that Jonathan Frid has continued on playing Barnabas for the last 39 years is extreme, even by the standards of today.

cheers, G.

Ah, DS Festival management--last refuge for the halt and lame!

It reminds me of the end of Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe:  "We apologise for the inconvenience."

Unfortunately it is by the dreadful Dan "Marilyn" Ross... as I recall it, this one does actually have some decent bits, such as the scene under discussion--all no doubt cribbed from Sam and Gordon.

That is wonderful news re Louise Jameson.  She always struck me as a very hip, very talented actress, who deserved more (although admittedly I haven't been able to follow her career since the Who days).

I love it that they're going cross-fandom with these... very cool!

The capture that was posted during the day on Tuesday was really quite delightful.  You didn't need a caption to see that Mrs. Johnson thoroughly disapproved of Jason Maguire from the get-go.

It doesn't get much better than Clarice Blackburn and Dennis Patrick... one of the many marvelous moments from the first year of DS, as was discussed recently in another thread.  In many ways year one was the absolute pinnacle for the series--certainly insofar as the skillful management of dramatic tension and subtle unfolding of characterizations and plotlines goes...

I remember a scene in the Old House drawing room where Barn offers Julia some sherry, which she praises as "dry! lovely!"

I lost my copy of that book somewhere dans les brumes de l'antiquite, as the saying goes, alas...
