Calendar Events / Announcements '10 I / Blood and Roses (1960) trailer« on: May 10, 2010, 10:53:13 PM »
Fans of the 1795 storyline will catch a glimpse of a familiar image (involving blonde beauty Annette Vadim, a torn, blood-stained dress, and a mirror) in this trailer of Roger Vadim's 1960 classic Blood and Roses:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhQWVOuONQs&feature=related I wonder where this fan got hold of the trailer. I've heard of a laserdisc release from Japan (?) which may be the source. The trailer wasn't on the crappy EP VHS release from Paramount in the early 1990s, and the color on the trailer is much more vivid than the washed-out palette of the print Paramount presented in their US VHS release. Current Talk '10 I / Re: DS Mothers« on: May 10, 2010, 03:50:08 PM »
MB darling, this is FABULOUS! and you know I adore Sara's addition! Jenny rocks!
I think one of my favorite Mother's Day scenes in DS is from 1897 when Laura and Minerva are musing together on the joys of Motherhood. The subtext just makes this absolutely hysterical! In fact I may need to go home tonight and play that episode again. Julia very quietly mourning over "poor Motherless Eve" (which came from a very obscure poem some well-read fan tracked down) gets an honorable mention. G. 3469
Calendar Events / Announcements '10 I / Castle of Frankenstein cover with Barnabas, early 1970s« on: May 07, 2010, 10:20:53 PM »
This brings back fond memories for those of us old enough to have been around back when this was "the cerebral fan's alternative" to Famous Monsters:
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_L5fa2CwoCuY/SrFrhaB2PmI/AAAAAAAAAdE/uGo3ZFl5E34/s1600-h/CoF16.jpg I think of this painting as "Barnabas and the Leviathan Queen"--perhaps even Carolyn as she would have been after her "transformation"? If you go back to the gallery of other mag covers for this zine from the Sixties, you'll see that images of Barnabas figured several times over the years in the cover layout. Enjoy! G. 3470

I did find Paula Laurence as Aunt Hannah growing on me as she got more into the role. Her line readings initially seem a tip of the wiglet to Agnes Moorehead's Endora.
Paula Laurence was a personal friend of Sam and Grayson. I don't know whether that had anything to do with the casting. Sometimes personal friends of cast members wound up on the show because it was the last minute and a role had somehow not been cast. These stories make one wonder just how casting on the series was supposed to be handled. It seems too as if many of the regular players worked without contracts, which I would have thought would have been against union rules even back then for AFTRA members. G. 3471

Hey Janet,
Alas! Alack! No more Hoffman for at least a month. Collinwood just isn't the same without her vinegary smiles and barely smothered smirks. Talk about a Domestic Goddess! John Harkins, who played Horace Gladstone, was one of the most chameleon-like character actors I have ever seen. He also appeared as Lieutenant Costa (I think only for two episodes) during the 1967 Laura Collins storyline, Mr. Strak in the Leviathans story, and perhaps his best-loved (?) role among fans, the infamous Garth Blackwood, Master of Dartmoor. Lieutenant Costa is I think the most like John Harkins must have been in regular life, and if I had a picture of him to show you, you could see how completely he changed his appearance, bearing, and body language for the extremely sleazy role of Gladstone. Love your image of Gladstone at home on the ratty armchair scarfing down the Jello in one of this hideous plastic bowls. Brilliant! G. 3472
Current Talk '10 I / Re: 1970PT Watching Project Addendum« on: May 05, 2010, 10:12:03 PM »
This is fascinating. I never knew there was a week-and-a-bit period where the show went dark completely.
I had also not know until some years ago that Lela Swift had to help out in T'town as DC's unofficial AD. All this adds fuel to my argument that one of the most pressing reasons to pull the plug on the series for good was the imminent beginning of the NoDS shoot. But I'm sure that no documents exist to ever prove such a notion... G. 3473

I remember other periods when taping the episodes out of sequence was just as nutso as this. When I learned about this, it helped me understand why the actors could never understand what was actually going on--and why the writers and production stuff were barely able to do so.
Midnite love, that's a brilliant capture of Roger doing what he loves best! G. 3474
Calendar Events / Announcements '15 II / Re: Dark Shadows: New Audio Dramas from Big Finish« on: May 05, 2010, 02:56:32 PM »
Thanks for that frank review, Janet. I was completely uninspired by the trailer for the very first audiodrama (the name escapes me) because the writing just seemed so cookie-cutter, even though the voices and the music were of our beloved show.
Even with utterly banal writing, however, the thought of hearing Steele, Frid and Karlen's voices in a drama is just too exciting to turn away. As far as I'm concerned, those three could read aloud from the Manhattan phone book and it would be fascinating. If the story is rotten, however, this will definitely be a one-off for me. In general, real writers don't seem able to get jobs now-a-days. Anyone out there see the "remake" of Clash of the Titans? G. 3475

That trailer is gorgeous. Barbara Steele's voice literally sends chills up my spine.
Can't wait! G. 3476

hmmmmmm. I think I can definitely see what Hilton "loves" about him...
the question "but can he act?" really does seem superfluous. Thanks MB! So, remind me who played Carolyn in this one? G. 3477
Current Talk '24 I / Re: Another New Slideshow« on: May 02, 2010, 04:46:28 PM »
Just a note to thank you MB for those wonderful Julia closeups on display earlier this week (maybe these were for scene #187?). I particularly liked one where she was either saying the line about the sheriff thinking the vampire has left the community, or about their likelihood of complete success in the treatment. Grayson managed to look almost like a schoolgirl about to be taken out for a treat at that moment. marvelous capture.
And of course you know how much I love the one of Julia hovering in romantic rhapsody over the music box... If only the actors had been allowed to play out the denouement with some degree of tragic subtlety. Instead, we got DC's dream of becoming the Sam Peckinpah of the horror set. G. 3478

Ironic indeed. What he really meant was how glass-cuttingly astute she was being in refusing to buy into his "alas, poor Willie" act and instead throwing his real motives back in his face. Grand stuff. I'm still not sure just why she caved, on this particular occasion, except for the fact that the writers needed Willie back in the OH (and we fans rejoiced indeed at John Karlen's return!).

I don't remember Jenna Dewan at all. I do remember Blair Brown as someone supposedly named Elizabeth Collins Stoddard dithering away like Harriet Nelson on speed. It was highly disconcerting. The memory overall is indeed unpleasant, but there were pleasant moments--bits of Matt Czuchny's unclothed body, and Alec Newman's eyes and voice, being perhaps the most pleasant. In THIS DS I could definitely have gone for some Barn/Willie slash. Ah well.

I think if Paris Hilton had ever watched DS, she might have paraphrased to Ellen: "I have but one love, and her name is Hilton. and that's HOT."
reaching now for air-sickness bag... g.
