I really do live in a cave...

In the old lore collected by "Rev." Montague Summers and other authorities, vampires and werewolves were practically kissing kin.  While in some of the legends they were described very differently, in other folk-tales they were both regarded as forms of the Undead.

In the Universal 1940s films, "wolfman" Larry Talbot hangs out with Dracula, the Frankenstein monster, various mad scientists, Maria the gypsy (played by fabulous Marie Ouspenskaya--the Magda character was a mixture of Maria, the gypsy played by Marlene Dietrich in Touch of Evil--she actually has the line to the Orson Welles character, "you hef no future" and a dash of Grayson's over-the-top stage persona), etc.

I haven't kept up with the current trends so was unaware that there is a "tradition" of werewolves and vampires fighting one another.

Current Talk '10 II / Re: Favorite Julia Scenes (per MB request)

Julia says "I understand, completely," with a smile that's every inch the cat that copped the cream, when she's goading Barn about meeting her for breakfast or lunch or at some other "inconvenient" daytime hour.  This is almost right before the infamous boudoir scene...

Thanks, MB.  As for Vicki, Carolyn at least was in no doubt whatsoever as to what Vicki was doing, UNCHAPERONED, in Burke Devlin's room at the Inn! (i. e., exactly what Carolyn herself had planned for Mr. D.)

Those sound like fun.  I wish somebody would locate the master tape of "The Two Faces of Sean Doolittle," another ABC Wide World of Mystery production directed by Lela Swift with Grayson and Diana Davila in important supporting roles.  Apparently nobody can find it.  Sam Hall wrote the script.  Even though it was supposedly nothing special, I would love to see it.

Tonight's new Robservations capture highlights how in 1966 characters in the same scene appeared to be inhabiting different seasons.  Liz's stylish matronly wool coat-dress looks perfect for a brisk Fall morning in Maine, while Vicki's summery sleeveless number (the same dress we've seen in the recent captures, which makes perfect sense because Art Wallace was still writing the series as if it were playing out in real time, one half hour per day) seems like just the thing for a hot aestival afternoon chasing after that little devil David.

I love the expressions the two are wearing in this snapshot.  Liz seems to be saying "I don't think I can bear this ghastly coiffure much longer!" while Vicki seems to be offering sympathy--"It really doesn't make you look as if you're pushing 70, Mrs. Stoddard."

On the capture from yesterday, I was charmed by the detail of the big seashell ashtray in the Blue Whale.  That gave the scene a genuine touch of an old seaside resort in New England.  And Vicki's dress, even with the familiar sleeveless design, seemed unusual.

Great choices on these, MB!

God, the image that is about to be replaced from the piano scene really has me jonesing for the restoration to be finished!

I just love how bitchy Ange is in that scene!

mscbryk, I was just about to comment on that!  This is a great showcase of that very dowdy hairdo poor Joan was saddled with for a few episodes.  I do love the shot overall--again, it really seems to capture something essential in Liz's troubled relationship with Carolyn during the 1966 storyline (which of course continued well into 1967).

It's too bad we never saw whichever of the local beauty salon ladies would come up to Collinwood every couple of weeks to do Liz's hair during her years of seclusion at the Great House.  I remember in the mid 1960s my Great Aunt Madleine, who was a trained beautician, doing hair on the side in her kitchen.  We'd go over to visit and the entire kitchen had that odd chemical odor from the hair products; hair-clips and newspapers were everywhere, and the gossip and chatter were at a terrific volume, and I think the radio was tuned to the latest pop hits (no doubt, the music of the Shangri-las, the Supremes, the Ronettes, and all the other wonderful artists we had back then).

It would have been great fun to see Liz venting to her pet beautician about how everyone at Collinwood was driving her nuts.

Shortly thereafter, of course, we would have cut to a scene of Liz, in pearls, drop earrings, black cocktail gown and high heels running the vacuum cleaner...

Current Talk '10 II / Favorite Magda Scenes
« on: August 11, 2010, 02:32:22 AM »
Hey fans!  Let's spread the Grayson love around even a little more and talk about our favorite Magda scenes.  A couple that spring to mind:

(1) Jamison comes to the Old House and Magda tells him to go, she needs to get on with the housekeeping and something Barnabas has introduced her to--floorwax!

(2) Magda tells off Gregory Trask in words of one syllable and practically spits in his face.

(3)  After Sandor's death, Magda, in a dramatic black veil, takes an axe and chops the hand of Count Petofi in two.

There's more, so much more, but I'll see whether other fans chime in before continuing.

cheers, Gothique

Love today's two-shot of Liz and Roger from 1966.

Liz looks deeply concerned, while Rog is smugly gloating--this pretty much encapsulates their respective views on David from the time of the original storyline.

I love the new cover.  I wish it had been used for the CD.  I hate that shot of Ben Cross that they used for that.

Too bad the DVD content is still the same crap ...

I was traveling yesterday (day trip to Northampton) and everytime I would see a screen in a train or bus station flashing the date, it made me think of her and how it's been 25 years.

I can't imagine life without Grayson's legacy.  As an artist, as a woman, as one of the great eccentrics--she was one of a kind.

Rest in peace.
