Hi MSC,

Louis was a veteran stage actor and did a lot of theatre during his various times of hiatus on DS.  I believe some of it was outside the city, actually.  I don't know about his contract or whether he was allowed to request leave at certain times or how it worked.  The Craig Hamrick book, at least the original edition (I never got hold of the revision) did not give any insight into this, as I recall.

They've been married for years haven't they?  The wife and kids live in France...

Thanks for these, MB.  That shot of Roger and Carolyn having a face-off is superb!

Needless to say, I love today's shot of Julia's arrival... emerging from the murk and drizzle of the Collinsport train station...

Her introduction literally foregrounds that this Julia is a much "darker" character than the original.

Hi Janet, I think of the scene you mention as a very "Wuthering Heights" kind of moment.

Best, G.

You're right, Joey!  What a hoot!

One thing I have been enjoying about Downton Abbey (I just started episode 3 a few nights ago) is that it shows realistically how many people were required to keep a big manor house going.  At its height Collinwood in the 18th and 19th centuries would have had a staff of at least 20 I am sure.  This was hinted at only in the original 1966 storyline when discussion of just how many domestic staff Liz had fired was mooted in a few episodes.

Yes, Gerard, it can be done.  With an ironclad determination to ignore any postulate of logic, reality, or attempts at coherent continuity with previously established plot developments.

That's the real reason why we just can't get enough of this show!

cheers,

Virginia Vestoff's performance as Samantha is outstanding.  She's almost the only really brilliant element in the 1840 muddle, although I would certainly agree that Gabriel represents Chris Pennock's best work on the series.  It's too bad 1841 PT Gabriel turned out to be such a weakly defined character.

It's too bad, too, that Storm and Vestoff's 1841 PT incarnations dropped out of sight after a couple of episodes... but we take what we can get...

Dear Library,

Given how cavalier the DS writers (or more specifically, Lela Swift, since it seems to have been largely herself dictating where the storyline went at this point in the game) were with the existing continuity when it came time to construct the plot of the 1840 storyline, I'd say you should feel that you can have a free hand when it comes to 1870.

My biggest frustration with 1840, apart from the big reconciliation towards the end which strained credulity to the breaking-point, was that all kinds of information and hints were given about Collinwood in 1840 during the preceding "Summer of 1970" storyline--and then the writers proceeded to ignore nearly every snippet and hint they had dropped in favor of a completely different story!  In part this was because the story that had been envisioned would have called for such things as shipboard scenes on Gerard's pirate vessel, and they probably realized rather late in the game that there was no way in Hell that they could stage this at all realistically on the threadbare budget they were given.

Hope you enjoy writing your story.  We're not allowed to post fan fiction here, btw--just to let you know.

MSC, you crack me up!  Thanks for the laugh.

Are people really expecting the characters in Depp Shadows to bear any orderly or systematic relationship to the classic DS series?  I mean, Maggie Evans was changed pretty radically from the person we knew from the Sixties in the 1990 redaction of the story.  So if they decide to make Vicki a waitress who--for example--is hired at Collinwood to be a companion to a disturbed and reclusive Mrs. Stoddard when everybody's favorite "Cousin from England" (or will it be set in England and he'll be a "Cousin from America" this time around?), that should come as no surprise.  This is NOT going to be a remake of the 1966 series; it's going to be its own thing altogether.  Or at least, that is what it should be if it wants to have its own identity as a 21st century pop culture phenom.

I'm still disappointed that Angelique wasn't cast with a black actress.  To my mind, that would make a fascinating new departure and a decisive sign that we're dealing with something new here.

Hee hee!  MB proves again what discerning taste he has.  Thanks Kosmo for the clip URL.

I heard that a segment was run on Science Fiction in this series and it focused almost exclusively on Star Trek, totally ignoring 1950s sci-fi programming, The Outer Limits, etc.  What is it with Americans and wilful amnesia of our own history?

Yay!  One of my favorite shots popped up on page 1 of the Robservations page today; Maggie giving Mrs J the "talk to the hand" gesture as reliable old Sarah was ranting away about "those children!"  Just a fab scene.

Maggie is totally glamour queen of Collinwood in this episode, swanning about in different outfits.  It seems as if Maggie inherited some of Mrs Stoddard's clothing budget, for a few days at any rate.

On page 2, I also love the scene where Stokes informs Barnabas that they need to hold a seance to contact the spirit of Madam Finlay.  THIS is Classic DS!  It's totally wild when poor Mrs J becomes possessed by the spirit of the dead medium.  Great shot of Clarice from that scene.

Thanks again,

G.

Are they now saying Eva Green will portray Angelique in the new film?  Interesting.  She's playing another great Witch of legendry and lore, Morgana/Morgan le Fay, in the new Camelot series that's previewing on Starz at the end of this month.

There are trailers on Youtube--Green looks as if she really knows her craft and really knows how to bite into a role...
