Ugh, I wish he had found someone other than Pierson to interview about DS.

Why don't any of these journos interview our very own Mysterious Benefactor??

I know it seems odd but I think the "article" is meant to be an elaborate joke.  I noticed there were several other "Goth council interventions" on various topics.

They're not really DS fans, although one or two do seem to be fans.  Even what they say is hard to evaluate--I couldn't take any of it seriously.

Again, not to belabor the point, but I know people who would joshingly refer to HBC as a "sleazy whore" just because she married the guy who has directed a number of her star turns lately.  What can I say, I know people who have a sense of humor sometimes lacking in good taste.

Just giving my impressions.  As always, YMMV.

I agree, Philippe.  I really hope the entire movie is not written as those dialogue excerpts imply, but at this point, I feel very neutral about the whole thing.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I visited the Museum of Broadcasting in NYC a couple of times about 12 years ago.  The last I heard, they were trying to get permission to release one of the OLTL episodes with Grayson in the part of the archive that is available for public viewing.  Only a small part of it is accessible when you are there.  When I went, I was very surprised at the things people were choosing to watch.  It costs a not insubstantial fee to go in there but I saw people tuned to episodes of Seinfeld and the Honeymooners.

I viewed a tape that was made for the Museum by Lela Swift being interviewed about her career as a director, including the Playhouse 90 (or was it Studio One?) years.  That was quite interesting.  She did discuss DS, of course.

I've seen a couple of photographs of Grayson attending a SOAP vigil that was held in November of 1969.  I had the impression that the group didn't last very long, but perhaps it did.

Uncle Roger, oh how I wish the clip of Grayson with Anthony George and Nancy Barrett could be included as an extra on one of the MPI discs!  I wasn't going to the Festivals back when they ran it.

At least this episode has appeared and perhaps we'll see more.  I have noticed over the past couple of years that more and more episodes of OLTL from this period are coming out of the mothballs.  Most of them are much better quality than this one.

I just love the exquisite drama of the moment when Lincoln mentions Miss Delilah and Euphemia freezes, her voices lowers to a perilously frigid bass pitch, and she rasps, "I told you nevah... NEVAH ... to mention that name!"

Nobody else does it like the Divine One...

Fans,

I am excited to report that I just learned that an episode of One Life to Live
we haven't seen before from Grayson's Euphemia Ralston storyline has been posted
to Youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZuvKfiie0M

I have been able to watch part 1 (there seem to be 3 parts in all) and although
the visual quality is not too good, the sound is OK.  I played through parts 2 and 3 and Grayson reappears for a short scene in part 3.  No Nancy Barrett or Tony George in this one, so far as I can tell.

For those who don't know, Grayson's personal backstory for Euphemia was that as
a young woman, she had either been raised in the North or been educated there
and so would not have a typical Southern accent. However, one of the directors
on the show disagreed and made Grayson play the role with a "corn-pone"
deep-fried accent. The episode currently available is an example of Grayson
having to work with this Director. Eventually (thankfully) Grayson got her wish
and Euphemia lost the Southern accent.

I'm not up on the history of OLTL but I believe that Euphemia's estranged
daughter Delilah became a regular character on the show. Euphemia's final
episode was taped in around April 1983 I believe.

It has been a longtime dream of mine some day to be able to view ALL of
Grayson's work as Euphemia.

Best,

Steve

Oh yeah.  Different costumes, sets rearranged, people appearing and disappearing...

I think they worked under the assumption that we all had amnesia from one day to the next. Eventually, I guess they learned better, but never well enough to keep it all consistent.

I still maintain that given the pressures, time-frame, and sheer unbridled insanity with which the average workday there was interlaced, the shows maintain an extraordinary level of quality... which is why it IS my all-time favorite TV show EVER...

It depends.  Sometimes they just used what had been taped the day before.  On other occasions, the re-stagings (as I think of them) could have dramatic differences.  I remember once when Thayer David was in a scene at the end of Day One, and suddenly not in the same scene's finale when repeated on Day Two.

Thanks for that info, Darren.  I seem to recall having read somewhere that Karlen was very happy with his status on DS.  As you said, it give him the freedom to pursue other projects in between bursts of very regular work on the series.

Fascinating to read that actors still to this day work on soaps without contracts.  I would have thought that union regs would no longer allow such a situation, but my knowledge of the current industry is practically nil.

A lot of the actors on DS worked without a contract.  I guess things were a lot more loose back in the Sixties.

I would love to see episodes from Hidden Faces.  I bet it was a hoot.

I just had a look at the French Wikipedia article and it actually says that Angelique turned Barn into a vampire when she fell in love with him and he rejected her.

I'll spare you my rant about automated translation utilities.

Wait a minute.  The first arc is supposed to run from issues one to six.  Why on Earth would they do a collection of just the first four?

If they do, presumably it will be a limited-run tie-in collectible related to the movie release.

Thanks for the news, Darren, and for the hints that the delay may help you to deliver a superior product.  After all the YEARS of your own time you have put into this project, you deserve to be allowed to get it right.  I appreciate the fact that the films are in the hands of such a knowledgeable fan as yourself.

In the old days, whenever a remake came along, it meant that the original or previous iterations of a story were buried in the deepest, darkest vault known to humankind and sometimes lost for a time altogether.  This happened with both the 1932 Old Dark House and the 1935 She, I believe, in the Sixties.
