Interesting comparison, michael.  I think you may have a point.

I am lol at your use of the Salem Branch.  hee hee!

Yep.  I tossed mine in the recycling bin 30 seconds after finishing with it.

I wouldn't put it under the catbox.  I have more respect for my kitty than to subject her to that.

Current Talk '12 I / Re: A Thought about 1970 Parallel Time
« on: March 20, 2012, 02:00:37 PM »
If Moltke had come back to play a new character, especially an evil one, during the Tarrytown hiatus period, I think it would have made PT 1970 an even more nuanced and intriguing story.

We got Lara Parker as the ingenue in PT 1841.  I'm just as glad that she got to play a thoroughly psychotic version of Angelique in this storyline.

And this reminds me:  having finished the new comic book and seen the 2012 trailers, what is it with the evolution of the Angelique character into a psychotic slag with super-powers?  On the series, she was also a character with a lot of shadings and nuances and layers.  Yeah, Barnabas always ranted about how eee-vil she was, but we (the audience) got to see some of her doubts, her questionings, and even her desire for love as opposed to her obsessive need to have Barnabas come crawling to her on his hands and knees.

There is no answer to this... maybe the trend for apocalyptic villains with superpowers in the mass media is part of the reason for why the character seems to be written as she is in spin-offs and tie-ins.

Current Talk '12 I / Re: Complete Original Series April 10 on DVD

That is very sad that MPI refused to cooperate with Tim Lucas.  His work on Bava has been epochal, and some outstanding material by himself and others (such as Kim Newman) has appeared over the years in Video Watchdog.  What's more, people who read VW actually buy DVDs, unlike the typical reader of Time or Vanity Fair or whatever.

Dumb call, MPI.  One does wonder just what's up with that box set.  They have a good sales potential with it even with the high ticket price... given that there is no sign to date of WB doing ANY marketing at all connected with the Burton-Depp feature.

Wow, I finally sat down to look at issue four and it's ... wall-to-wall schlock is the best phrase I can come up with for it.

If the original issues 4 through 6 were combined into this one final issue that explains at least some of the ways in which the story fails.  I don't know why they hired such a poor artist, and the colorist didn't even bother to check hair colors from earlier issues.

I wonder how long this mag will last.  Fans of the new movie will be puzzled when they check it out and don't find any jokes...

Calendar Events / Announcements '12 I / "Dank Shadows" returns

The new episode (17/XVII) of Dank Shadows is available for viewing on their youtube page:

I have to say this version of Josette's music box is a real riot!

Well, frankly, regardless of how I feel about the new movie, I think Burton is pretty much hardly to blame--in my own eyes.  Given what has been reported here of what they're saying about him and his work elsewhere.  I am not on this sites and am blissfully ignorant of all of it--and rapidly losing interesting in keeping up with any of it.

I think Radcliffe would make a great Barnabas, say ten or twenty years down the line.  If anybody wants to do DS again after the release and box office performance of the Burton-Depp parody.

If the parody really takes off and does huge b/o, I don't really know that anyone would want to bother doing another take on the old story.  but then, who knows?

Fans, for anyone interested, this notice was posted last night on the Classic Horror Film fans board.  By the time I saw it, the podcast was already in progress so I did not bother to post here.  There was a notice I saw just now saying that they are going to make Pierson's segment available as a downloadable or streamable podcast on the site, http://www.cultradioagogo.com.  The blurb:

8 PM PST / 11 PM EST - We begin our 2 hour segment / open forum on Dark Shadows and the new film which just had the trailer revealed this past week. Dark Shadows community leader / convention organizer / author / new film consultant JIM PIERSON has just agreed to come on our show tonight as well. It should be an interesting night discussing the.. events at hand.

If you get a chance to listen, our DS segment will be on from 8 pm pst (11 pm est) until 10 pm pst (1 am est) and may go over if things get too in depth.  You can listen LIVE for free by going to www.cultradioagogo.com (end of blurb)

There was also a post saying that (the rest edited by admin)

I haven't had time to listen to Pierson's segment and I imagine it will just be the usual spin-a-thon.  But if anyone does bother to listen, I'd be interested to read your notes.

Best, G.

Nancy honey, I am so sorry about your loss of that storage trailer.  I've lost a lot of things over the years too, but in a much less traumatic way; simply through the detritus of moving about, living on continents thousands of miles apart, etc.

I figured out a solution to what I'll call the enigma of Depp Shadows--it's a parody.  Pure and simple.  Think about it.  It's actually a brilliant strategy for Burton since filming a parody plays to all his strengths as a director.  I presume that Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Slayer also has elements of parody (how could it not, with a title like that?) which explains the choice of screenwriter.  As with the original DS, the director has his own huge input no doubt.

I feel confident that this film will be a success with teens and twentysomethings, which means WB giving the green light to the full restoration of NoDS and the release of the 1970s feature films on a regular commercial DVD as opposed to MOD.  Which was what I personally wanted all along.  So, no hysterics from this fan.

Thanks, Arashi.

Hmmm.... it all sounds reminiscent of the glory days of Joe Certa and Gold Key comics.

I have the current issue on hold at my comics shop, and would like to read to the end of the current arc--I thought it was supposed to continue through to issue 6, but maybe not?

The whole
Quentin becoming a wolf thing in the last issue was just DUMB.  I hope it gets explained at some point.  I'm not all that optimistic though.
Anyhow, Bat, thanks for the review.

Best, Gothick

Well, I may not care for the new movie, but I would never tell somebody s/he "isn't a fan" on the basis of they like it and I don't.

I have already had disagreements here about the 1991 and 2004 remountings with people near and dear to me.  The disagreements have not affected my friendships with these fellow fans at all.  I like to think that we can be friends and still have our own opinions about things.  I hate the enforced conformity of "love me, love my eye candy" (or however you choose to phrase it).

The idea of fans hacking out little police states where you agree with them or face the firing squad on Twitterpate and Facebook is beyond ridiculous.  These people really have wayyy too much time on their hands.

Interesting review.  I couldn't see much of what was described in my one viewing of the off-broadcast posting of the trailer.

The description of Angelique's tongue makes me think of something out of "Death becomes her."

Maybe Warners will have the trailer on their website.  If they ever get around to actually LAUNCHING it, of course...

The trailer, from what I could make out of it, seemed very much in line with what I had come to expect.  A Saturday Night Live skit on DS.  Complete with "Superfly" on the soundtrack.

I'd say much more Munsters than Addams Family... the comedy, on the original Addams Family at least, was a lot more subtle than this.

Thanks, Sara, for making an album for those photos.  Excellent work!

I remember thinking when I saw the first cast photo that it looked a lot like the Addams Family, and lately I keep thinking of The Munsters too.

I am reminded of a line uttered by Maggie Smith in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie:  "For those who like that sort of thing... that is the sort of thing that they like."

I do have to say that the art direction in these photos is by and large stunning.  It makes one mourn for what might have been.
