He mentions specifically a subplot involving David and Barnabas being cut already by the time he was shown a workprint.
The curse of Dark Shadows: an elaborate narrative is constructed; studio suits bark "cut it down, boys!" the feckless auteurs scamper to obey, and the result is a hash. Sound familiar? G. 2493

I really wish ALL the cuts from those first 7 or 8 volumes had been restored. I don't think MPI wants to pay for that, though.

Danger Will Robinson! that particular review is more spoiler-laden than most I've seen to date.
For those who are going out to see it tonight, happy haunting! G. 2496

I have to say I found it a hoot that Alice Cooper thought the set for the Great Hall of Collinwood looked "just like the Playboy Mansion."
That comment, and the macrame bit in the one clip, are the funniest things to have emerged from this affair this far, at any rate so far as I am concerned. G. 2498

I don't know to what extent this factor has been discussed here, but we are obviously all aware of disgruntled DS fans gunning for the project in certain forums. Where reviews are concerned, the factor to be aware of is that there are people in "the Industry," including a number of professional critics, who are gunning for Tim Burton and who have probably been sharpening their hatchets for weeks now in preparation for the movie's opening.
I can't go over the litany of reasons why so many people in the industry profess to have had it with Burton, but it's been a frequent topic in certain other forums where I have seen the DS project discussed. This has nothing to do with people's perceptions about what DS should or should not be; it has to do with people perceiving that Burton has sold out/come to a dead end/stopped caring/is repeating himself/etc. and so on. The Forbes mag piece seems a bit premature. There are many cases of movies tanking with the critics and cleaning up at the box office. Just think of the Adam Sandler films (I think these were mentioned previously), the hot tub time machine films, the hangover films, etc. cheers, G. 2499

I watched a little of the Youtube footage. The premiere looked like the usualy H'wood madhouse.
I don't know why somebody found it necessary to yell that the late Mr. Frid is "the only Barnabas Collins." Mr. Depp doesn't deserve heckling. Regardless of what one may think of his performance or the movie, he has been very respectful to Mr. Frid throughout the project and said lovely words after Mr. Frid passed on. G. 2500

Yeah. If more of the movie were going to be along the lines of PfeiffLiz's scenes with BarnaDepp and JuliaBC, I might actually be interested in seeing it.
But most of what I have seen of it makes me think the thing will be a crashing bore. With stunning costumes and art direction, granted. G. 2501

Congratulations! I remember hearing of Karlenzine back when I first learned of fandom in the late 1980s. It's very special that Mary has published a new issue. Long may she sail!
Interestingly I just saw a fun Karlen cameo--it almost had the flavor of "Karlen does Columbo" (well, he did have the raincoat)--he played a baffled police detective in a Lela Swift production of the mid 1970s, The Cloning of Clifford Swimmer, which was recently shown on the "Fox" "movie" "channel." The play was originally produced for the ABC Wide World of Mystery series. Karlen's scene lasted perhaps five minutes, but he was great as always. G. 2502

Interesting.
This isn't a spoiler really, but in this new "featurette," you hear the "Carolyn" flute riff from hoDS playing over the scene when the construction crew have just unearthed Barnabas and he utters the "thirsty" line when about to attack one of the men. G. 2503

I'm the same way, Gerard. I've seen so many of these things now that what gives me real pleasure is the quality of the performances, how the story is told, whether the dialogue is of a superior calibre, etc.
It takes a really devious inventive mind to surprise me. Two movies where I was at least jolted were Carrie and The Crying Game (where the "big reveal" was less of a surprise than how the director chose to reveal it). I thought I couldn't ever be shocked like that again but it happened a couple of years ago when I saw the 1989 film The Woman in Black (recently re-made by a coalition of production companies including a revived aegis of Hammer studios). A friend told me that there was no attempt in the remake to re-stage the shocking scene in the 1989 version. Which was probably just as well. cheers, G. 2505

I checked McDonnell's own IMDB page the other day and DS 2012 is no longer listed among his credits. Interestingly, he did do a movie called The Occult that's due for release next year.
I figured that he probably had just filmed a couple of scenes that might have been seen briefly in a montage type sequence about Barnabas's early life, but it would seem that his scenes wound up cut altogether. As actors are well aware, this kind of thing happens all the time--an example that comes to mind is Barbara Steele's scenes in a movie called I never promised you a rose garden being cut. And in the case of Grayson, only two of the four scenes that she filmed for End of the road made it into the final film. Unfortunately, the scene that motivated Grayson to do the project was not among what was kept. G.
