Kelly Hu barely registered as Julia in my one viewing of the pilot because the character really had very little to do.  As it was, they crammed far too much story (IMO) into a 40 minute snippet--to me, one of the downfalls of the pilot.  That, and the ending, but I'll save the rant because I know there are some who I respect and am very fond of here who thought the ending was the bees' knees.

Julia is on hand for a couple of scenes and had, if I'm recalling correctly, maybe three or four lines?  Kelly really may not recall much about it.  Presumably she would have been told about the plans for Julia to become a major character and at least some of what was planned for Julia in this iteration.  It would be been interesting to see her take on the character.  But, alas...

btw, the new series is to be called 1313 Mockingbird Lane (the Munsters' address in the old show).

I really wish they would leave these things alone...

Calendar Events / Announcements '12 I / Possible New Munsters Series
« on: June 06, 2012, 09:22:38 PM »
Last night I was reading about plans to do a new series of The Munsters on one of the major networks.  This time around, it sounds as if the series is going to be a full-on horror/drama series rather than a comedy.  The official blurb says that Herman's artificially assembled body is starting to rot and he needs to find a living human "donor" for a new heart.  Sounds tasty, doesn't it?  What surprised me is this time around, Eddie is described as a "child werewolf" which I definitely don't recall being part of the original scenario.  Makes me wonder if they're going to grab anything not nailed down from the 2012 Depp Shadows movie for this series.

I won't be watching, but no doubt I will be reading at least some of the reviews if this makes it to the airwaves.

Hmm,well, I think 1972 is too early for "The Bitch is back ..." *rolls eyes*

You might have to wait till the home video release and then try listening with headphones to catch this.

OK, this is really trivial and barely on topic, but ... we all know about the DS themed cosmetics campaign one of the big brands (I honestly forget which one) has launched as a movie tie-in... well, I was just in the drugstore buying a few sundries and I saw in the perfume and makeup department this huge maquette (or whatever it's called) for a new line from Cover Girl with the tag, "Don't spend your life living in somebody else's shadow."  And whether I'm hallucinating or not, the model featured on the ad looked a lot like Magtoria/Josette as portrayed by Miss Heathcote.

It made me giggle...

Current Talk '12 I / Ghostwriting

Ah! ? The scene from Jamison's dream of David's last birthday! One of my favorite moments in the series! ? If only Violet Welles had been with the show longer!

Hi Arashi, according to an interview with Violet Welles published in Dale Clark's zine, she did come back to write many scripts in the final couple of months of DS.  She started out ghostwriting scripts for Gordon Russell who must have been busy with other projects or perhaps just needed some time doing something other than writing DS, and then somehow got on the show's roster as a writer.  I'm guessing that if Violet was not mis-remembering her time on the show, her final relay of scripts must have been the same arrangement--Russell got the screen credit but she did the work.

The arrangement is apparently more common in television than the general public are widely aware.

There were definitely tweets from Thomas McDonell about his work on the movie in London.  I remember there being mention of his work coming at the end of the filming schedule.

I would guess that his material did not even make it into Burton's final cut, so it is unlikely (IMO) that his footage will make it into the "deleted scenes" on the Blu Ray (which I expect to contain the material Graham-Smith mentioned in that interview).  But who knows.

I heard that the WB suits have claimed that for the Avengers disc, deleted scenes will only be included on the Blu Ray release, btw.  I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happens with Depp Shadows.  I presume that Warners owns the company that manufactures Blu Ray players or has some kind of interest in the sale of same.

cheers, G.

Well beyond the thoughts of the original series DS fanbase, there's this oddly assorted contingent of folks who have as one of their chief goals in life the desire to bury Tim Burton alive, career-wise.  Particularly any project Burton does with Johnny Depp.  So, it was pretty much on the cards that this project was going to attract some particularly vicious, vitriolic criticism from that quarter.

I haven't looked at those reviews and I don't really have time, but I would bet you dollars to doughnuts that the "Tim Burton must be destroyed" league is at work again... just my thoughts.

Simply stunning!  You know how I love that scene with Hoffman and AngelExis from PT 1970.

"I HATE having to take orders from HER!"

"Now Julia... we are playing a war of nerves..."

Sublime.  Parker and Hall played off one another so brilliantly in those scenes...

Cool.  Thanks for taking the time out to enlighten us!

I associate European horror and genre films of the Sixties, especially the Italian ones, with really fake foley effects.  Even as a kid I noticed how the footsteps sounded so artificial in Italian movies that would air on TV.

But somehow it was all part of the charm...

Is "foley" shorthand for some form of post-sync type sound production?

Thanks for the clarification, Darren!  Love your theory about the Claret Cup.

Life staggers onwards, and as the late Kurt Vonnegut used to say... "so it goes."

My two drachmae for what it's worth--don't expect rationality from studio decision-makers.  They may or may not decide to do a Shadows sequel upon any variety of pretexts--and the project could spend years in development and wind up being squelched by some other studio suit's whim.  A lot of what they say is just dust blowin' in the wind (as the saying used to go).

BTW I am loving the OS theme this month.  It looks as if 1897 Laura's wig is eating her brain at the moment.  lol!

Yet another Strange Paradise announcement, and this one is also relevant to DS.  Like many other genre periodicals and mags in recent months, the magazine Rue Morgue released a special DS issue (with Barnabas on the cover) earlier in May.  The magazines are finally showing up at some local outlets, and I just saw the issue this evening in Cambridge's Newbury Comics.  The final page of the issue is a recurring feature entitled Classic Cuts and in this issue the Classic profiled is none other than Strange Paradise. It's illustrated with a never before published photo of Raxl (as portrayed deliciously by Cosette Lee) and scans of two of the Dorothy Daniels paperback covers.

Very cool that Strange Paradise was remembered in conjunction with material on DS.  The profile is actually a reasonably affectionate tribute, too.  Most press received by Strange Paradise since 1969-70 has been, to be euphemistic, less than positive.
