Current Talk '21 I / Re: Depp/Burton DARK SHADOWS Is In Release!!

I doubt this is news, but a friend just rented the movie via Red Box. So, that operation is carrying it.

He mentioned enjoying the art direction, especially the sets, and the fun Burton had with things those of us who lived through the early Seventies recalled from the era.  Julia's clown makeup got a shout-out, too.

Golly, those DVD captures look dark.  Maybe it's the delightful people who work for the home video department punishing anyone who refuses to buy a Blu Ray player. *shrug*

The "cropping" might be a result of the correct screen ratio being restored.  I remember Darren writing in previous posts about pan and scan versions where more of the frame actually showed up than was intended by the director.  I wish I could recall the details, but my short term memory is like a swiss cheese that a rat has had its way with these days...

How cool.  i love the brief scene in hoDS where Stokes visits the deserted mansion and overnight it's become completely desolate again.

Too bad about the staircase.  People just love to destroy fine old things.

MB, if I'm remembering that Carlotta scene correctly, at the beginning of it Carlotta has just come in with fresh flowers for the vase in front of Angelique's portrait.  That's a subtle touch that I love.

Perhaps Olivia can be glimpsed next month in the scene where Julia recalls having seen Olivia on stage in NYC, and we ponder the irony of such a poised actress as Grayson Hall feeding a line like that to "Olivia Corey."  (but I'm not bitter)

The Carolyn/Burke shot is fab, too...

Wow, the new themes are gorgeous!  I love the shot of Carolyn and Julia from one of my favorite '67 episodes!

and Count Petofi, too!

Current Talk '12 II / Re: Malcolm Marmorstein article
« on: October 31, 2012, 07:02:25 PM »
Yes, I mentioned to the journalist when he was researching this piece that Art Wallace claimed to have created Barnabas.  I asked a friend who owns the Art Wallace story bible publication "Shadows on the Wall" if there was any material relating to Barnabas or a vampire storyline in that volume and the answer was negative.  Perhaps the material has never been published or perhaps Wallace simply destroyed it.  Who knows.

I thought it was interesting to hear Marmorstein tell his story.  I don't recall this particular angle having been covered in the Ed Gross interview with MM (there was one, wasn't there?).

Current Talk '12 II / Malcolm Marmorstein article
« on: October 31, 2012, 05:30:44 PM »
Fans,

the author of this article had been in contact with me, and he sent me the link for the final version last weekend.  It looks interesting:

http://movieline.com/2012/10/08/who-created-barnabas-collins-dark-shadows-johnny-depp-tim-burton-jonathan-frid-dan-curtis/

Interesting to see the actual writers claim that THEY introduced the whole "reluctant/vulnerable" vampire theme--I had always read that that was Jonathan Frid's own contribution and the writers simply followed his lead.

The article includes Malcolm Marmorstein's views on Depp Shadows.  The short version:   he didn't like it.

I just returned from a trip to Seattle.  We flew JetBlue and Depp Shadows was on offer as one of the in-flight films.  I missed seeing it both going out and returning, however, for various reasons, although my companion did watch it going out.  She asked me a bunch of questions about the movie story vis a vis the original series (which she has never seen--however, she is a huge Buffy fan).

The other films on offer included Madagascar 3, The Amazing Spiderman, and I think something by Wes Anderson (but don't quote me).

I did see a number of people playing the movie on the flight out.  It was a little surprising to look up from my book and see the face of BarnaDepp looming out from various nearby screens!

That would be extremely kind of someone.  Someone who has fed Gothique's desire to drool and pander to the glories of the male physique in the past.  Someone who always takes Gothique's tacky remarks about nipples, shoulder blades and other ... appendages with sterling good humor.  Someone who has a kind, generous, giving heart.

A friend who has been watching this faithfully reported last week that the episode began with a scene of JLM with his shirt off and she said that the sight was a fine ravishment for the eyes (I am paraphrasing).

I realize that nobody here watches television to gratify their lustful urges for male pulchritude--apart from myself, of course--so I am simply reporting this as a "by the way" bit of factoidiana.

Calendar Events / Announcements '12 II / Cher at Greystone
« on: October 23, 2012, 05:09:32 AM »
Tonight on my way home I read in Billy Masters' weekly gossip column that Cher is giving a concert at Greystone in honor of the 50th birthday of Elton John's husband, David Furnish.  The concert is going to be a private invitation only party, or so the report implied.

I do wonder if there will be a DS theme, although since the Eltons are English, I doubt whether they know anything about the series.

Another of my favorite Thayer David shots from NoDS today (and one of his juiciest lines, too).

Thanks so much for all of these, MB.  Although there has been no announcement, I presume that the hoDS/NoDS series will be retired, now that the Blu Ray releases are about to hit the streets.  I presume you'll be replacing this series with a Depp Shadows series next year, although that's just my educated guess.  You know how wildly imaginative I can be.

cheers, Gothique
