Well, MB, I'm sure you can guess how I feel about Thayer's presence in the movie.  Given what a huge fan I am of every moment he was ever onscreen...

That's a wonderful two-shot of Laura and Mrs. Castle in today's presentation.  One I don't recall at all.  I'm so glad they did include Clarice in this film.

Just a note about the original series voiceover opening "My name is Victoria Winters."  I had it in the back of my mind when this came up again that there were probably a couple of precedents for this.  And I think most if not all of them were from the glorious years of "old time radio."

One example was a 1950s radio soap, "This is Nora Drake," which started each show with the titular protagonist declaiming just that line:

Several of the regular actors on the show did radio.  Thayer had quite a career doing commercial radio voiceovers.

Great shot of Strack today.  Thayer was so perfect in that role.  Of course, I know Jerry would have nailed it, too, but the nuances would have been quite different.

This one, from 2001, seems to be the standard print available now.  I just bought some of the Corman Poe films on DVD and they looked great.  THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM was done in a letterbox format that made it kind of small on my computer screen, but I think you can improve that by changing settings.  I still found it quite watchable and enjoyed seeing it again so much.  There was a note on Amazon about the redaction of this film included in a five movie Vincent Price set that I recently bought.  Of course, now everything is moving to "streaming" but I find that physical media play much better for me, because of my ISP or the fact that I don't have up to date tech--don't really know and don't much care, at this point...

Those early shows are so fab.  So nuanced and rich in character writing.

I particularly love any scene involving Liz and Miss Winters.

Fans,

a month or two ago, I revisited Roger Corman's exquisitely mounted film of THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM starring the Immortal Vincent Price, and I noticed a number of plot devices and images that seemed to have been re-staged in DS.

Just a little while ago, a friend of mine posted this trailer for HOUSE OF USHER (1960) on a film page we're both on:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QslKMIOeME8

I'd forgotten about that gruesome image of a bloodied hand groping its way out of a chained coffin.  Interesting to speculate that that might have inspired Malcolm Marmorstein, if he was the one who came up with the idea of the vampire being released from such a coffin.

True about Laura's fate.  However, some element of a frame-up would help explain her derisive, hysterical laughter at Angelique's funeral--a wonderful moment...

Beautiful shot of Diana there.  It's intriguing to imagine a version of the story where Laura framed Angelique for witchcraft to get her revenge on both her rival and Charles.  But if you accept that, it doesn't really explain certain things that happen in the 1971 narrative that imply that sorcery is at work.

Unless LAURA was the Witch...

It's an excellent feature MB, and I am enjoying the insights you are bringing to light with it!

Hi Patti,

The photos are shots from a sequence in NIGHT OF DARK SHADOWS (the second DS film which came out, I think, in the Summer of 71--45 years ago!).  They relate to a special feature on the film MB has been doing this year.

cheers, G.

The dialogue in the scene at hand now is interesting because, to me at least, it strongly implies that Angelique Collins (in NoDS) really was a Witch.  I've seen stuff written about the movie that describes the story as being about "the ghost of a wronged woman unjustly accused of Witchcraft" and I don't think that's the story the movie actually tells.

It also implies that there's an element of sorcery involved in the hauntings, which is certainly borne out in how certain sequences are shot.

I remember the first 8 or 9 videotapes in the original MPI VHS releases being edited.  The only Jason material was stuff involving Barnabas.

When the "Collector's Series" (which you own) came out, they continued the VHS version into the early Barnabas shows for the benefit of those who had bought the previous videos with the edits (which in some cases were really quite substantial--I think entire episodes were missing).

I can't recall now how this was handled with the DVDs.  I tried doing a google but the info I was looking for wasn't showing up.

They released everything from the "Introduction of Barnabas" onwards in consecutive order.

Then they went back and released "Dark Shadows:  The Collectors series," which was everything from episode 1 to some point during the early Barnabas storyline.

Originally on the VHS tapes, they had edited the early Barnabas episodes and a lot of the Jason material had been excised.  I don't remember them doing that when they put out the DVDs but maybe they did.  I do know that one episode from the Aged Barnabas segment had to be reissued at one point because originally it was only available in an incomplete form.

After all the DVDs had been out for maybe 3 or 4 years, I started buying them on Amazon vendor.  I think I also found a few for stores.  Gradually over maybe 18 months or so, I collected them all.

Because of this, I really have no interest in the coffin set.  Glad you were able to have one though since you didn't own any of the discs.
