Behind the scenes footage has been posted in this clip. Perhaps this is already familiar to fans of this film--I don't really follow this particular fandom so I do not know, but I'm posting this here in case it is of interest. Pretty cool to see how certain things were done.

Somebody is selling one of those "Barnabas TV's cool ghoul" boxes that the bubble gum cards would be displayed in back in 1968 for around $450 on ebay. It's probably already been sold. Even with the economy in its current state, there are wealthy collectors snapping this stuff up. Don't ask me to explain it.

A fan who's well placed to have inside information has hinted heavily on social media that the restored "director's cut" of NoDS is finally close to being completed and released on disc. I devoutly hope that this proves to be the case.

It may be a rumor that has somewhat greater prospect of coming to fruition in the near future than the unfortunate lack of activity with Mark B. Perry's efforts to find a home for his DS Resurrection series.

Fingers crossed!

The conversation about the Gold Key comics was so lively and a lot of fun! I'm not a fan of the comics, but this morning I rummaged through my shelves and brought the one book I still possess along to peruse on my commute--issue 3. I'm surprised at how well done I found the story, and unlike a lot of the later numbers (from what I have read--memory has failed and I stopped buying the book sometime in 1972, I think), the story actually feels like something that might have been done on DS. You do have to smile at Professor Stokes being addressed as "Dr. Stokes." I think I could hear an astral snort of derision from Dr. Hoffman when I read that, lol.

Last week I enjoyed watching the episode featuring handsome James Storm and his lovely bride, Valerie Pronio. It was interesting to hear Jim mention towards the end that he appeared in an episode of the recent here! TV series, The Lair: Onlyfangs. It looks as if his role isn't documented on IMDB, not surprising given that this series seems kind of ephemeral. I watched a five minute preview of the first episode online and it seemed like a parody of What we do in the shadows, which was already a parody to begin with. As Miss Brodie once commented, "For those who like that sort of thing, that is the sort of thing that they like." But the cast is attractive and the sets are beautifully dressed.

Hawaiian Eye seems as if it was a pretty cool show. I was really young (around 2 or 3 years old) when it ran originally, so had no memory of it, though my parents might have watched it back then. Frustratingly, some episodes were on youtube a couple of months ago, but then were abruptly deleted, even though there doesn't seem ever to have been an official home video release of this series. There are plenty of versions out there on the "gray market," of course.

Hi MB,

Yes, Rocky & Bullwinkle was a very good show. Some months ago I started watching this very long (11 hours plus!) youtube upload of the first season. It was fascinating because back in the 1960s, by which time I think I was watching old reruns, I never got to see any of these in order. I was able to watch the arc of the Rocky & Bullwinkle segments here. The idea of an explosive recipe for chocolate pan dowdy is so hilarious, and it just gets more bizarre and surreal as it goes on. All the other segments are fun, too.

Dan Silvio shared this note from Marie Wallace about this event:

I believe they're just announcing now to Hold The Date. The ticket sale notice will come later (mid-August) but we wanted everyone to save that weekend. And Kathryn and I will announce it before the site does to give our loyal DS fans the chance to buy them before the General Public. Look forward to seeing you.

Calendar Events / Announcements '24 I / hoDS screening in LA
« on: July 04, 2023, 11:57:53 PM »
Fans,

My friend Todd Macintosh who worked on BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER as one of the main makeup artists, and also worked on the 2004 DS pilot, is going to give a talk about Dick Smith's Old Barnabas makeup as part of this screening of a 35 mm print of hoDS in LA. The screening, a double feature in which the other movie will be the Eighties classic THE HUNGER, will happen Thursday, August 17, at 7:30 p.m. Link:

https://www.academymuseum.org/en/programs/detail/the-hunger-with-house-of-dark-shadows-018733b8-6c42-dd8e-1255-ece11fe95b69

Todd is an excellent speaker and I'm sure the evening will be fun and fascinating.  Earlier this year, Todd was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award from IMATS, the International Make-up Artist Trade Show, honoring his more than 40 years of significant contribution to make-up artistry. Todd owns some primary source materials (or has seen some as well) and his talk will provide some really interesting details about Dick Smith's development of this iconic makeup.

Just wanted to let any fans who live in the LA area know that this is happening.

Calendar Events / Announcements '24 I / "The Quentin Story," 1990
« on: June 23, 2023, 04:12:55 PM »
For fans of the 1991 series,

One of Matt Hall's recent auctions included a treatment for a "Quentin story" by Sam Hall. Only the first page of the three-and-a-half page document was scanned here, and it reads more like a plot outline from the original 1840 storyline than a proposed treatment for the second season of the revival. But Matt dates it to the period in 1990 when he and Sam were both working on the new series.

Love that photo of Frid with Zacherley. Fun!

I enjoyed the chat with Rachel about Vicki. I'm in week 4 now of 1966 and Vicki is such a complex character.
Vicki, Burke, and the very disturbed child David were driving the plot in these early weeks, but the vibe is still one hundred percent DS. Of course our fabulous actors, Bob Cobert's incredible music and Sy Tomashoff's glorious sets have a lot to do with how it all comes together.

A fan asked me a few days ago if there would ever be any more DS Festivals. I was trying to recall when the last one happened. I think it was 2016 but that's a really vague guess. I do remember a few years ago some fans were trying to get one to happen in NYC, and I think it had to be canceled because too few people signed up for pre-registration.

Never say Never but I doubt there will ever be another Festival.

Fans of this film (I am not one) might be interested in this new Burton/Depp DS movie coloring book which is being sold through amazombie:

https://www.amazon.com/Dark-Coloring-Book-Mindfulness-Happiness/dp/B09YS6MPMX

I found out about this thanks to Dan Silvio. It's funny to think that this is being marketed as something to promote mindfulness and happiness. But I guess for some it would provide that.

It was fascinating to listen to your detailed commentary upon this screenplay, with excellent comments from Madelyn and Patrick, too.

I never expected the John August screenplay to turn out to have been an even bigger trainwreck than what was eventually filmed from that other writer (Seth Grahame-Smith).

I liked Patrick's theory that August was dictating this whilst drinking and as it went on, he just became less and less coherent. It seems a feasible explanation for just how little any of this made sense.
