If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Today's quote:
Ep #171 (1967) - Carolyn - 'But you MUST suspect her.'

From "#0170/0171: Robservations 09/19/01: Laura, Saboteur, Dream-Weaver"
Laura Collins is responsible for what happened to my mother, says Carolyn, and she's going to do something terrible to David, I know it. But why would she do something terrible to David--she loves him! says Vicki. I don't believe that, says Carolyn, I don't believe that woman is capable of loving anything or anyone. Someone knocks. Carolyn asks who it is. It's Peter, who has come up to see how Vicki feels. I'm fine, thank you, she assures him. Are you sure? he asks. Yes, much better, she says. I'm terribly sorry to put you through this terrifying experience tonight, he says, sitting beside her on the bed. What stopped Vicki from telling us the name of the person? asks Carolyn. Another force, he says, a force whose powers are at least the equal of Josette's. It's Laura, says Carolyn, it has to be. I wouldn't go as far as that, he says. But you must suspect her! says Carolyn. All we know, he says, is that there's a definite force present in this house, and its powers are hostile--that alone makes for a major breakthrough in knowledge.
The Robservations references the quote perfectly...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Carolyn - 'Yes, David MUST be in some kind of danger. He's the one Josette is trying to protect') was back on October 22nd.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Today's quote:
Ep #280 (1967) - Burke - 'Well, I MUST say I feel rather strange. This isn't exactly my style.'

From "#0279/0280: Robservations 12/11/01: Barnabas' Swinging Party"
#280
The Robservations doesn't reference any part of the scene in which the quote comes up, nor does the AOL Update for Ep #280. However, the way the quote comes up is first of all after an extended pause in which Burke's hand sticks out in the air waiting for Barnabas to shake it and Burke asks Barn if anything is wrong, Barnabas finally does shake Burke's hand while saying that of course nothing is wrong and he's delighted Burke could come. Then Burke says that for a moment he wondered if Barnabas objected to something about his costume. But to that Barnabas assures, "No. Not at all. As a matter of fact, Miss Winters helped me select it." And after Barnabas takes Vicki's wrap to hang it up, Vicki remarks, "I think Burke looks just like Jeremiah Collins, don't you?" Barnabas replies, "Very much so." And after that is when Burke delivers the quote...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Liz - 'So MUST I. Roger, you're being absurd') was back on December 15th.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Today's quote:
Ep #427 (1796) - Peter - 'Your honor, she's trying to suggest that we MUST accept second-hand testimony.'

From "#0427/0428: Robservations 04/04/02: Vicki's Trial Begins"
The trial begins.  You have one last chance to denounce your master and relinquish your powers, Trask says.  Vicki possesses no powers, says Peter.  Possession is the proper word, insists Trask, because that's what this trial is about--the possession of innocent souls by a witch!  He talks as though Miss Winters' guilt has already been decided, complains Peter to the judges.  Limit the editorializing, orders the judge.  Trask calls Abigail first.  She takes the oath and stands in the witness box, then describes Vicki's strange arrival--she was responsible for Jeremiah's death!  Trask and Peter get into an argument over that, and the judge forces them to stop.  Abigail explains how she made arrangements with their solicitor in Boston for a governess, but that woman, Phyllis Wick, never arrived--
it's witchcraft, says Abigail, and she hasn't been seen to this day!
The Robservations doesn't reference the quote in any way, and the AOL Update for Ep #427 is even less detailed. However, the way the quote comes up is after Abigail says how Phyllis Wick hasn't been seen and the Boston solicitor made inquiries...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Trask - 'The authorities agree-- Miss Winters MUST be brought to trial without warning, without having a chance to contact her master: Satan') was back on January 24th of 2022.
Today's quote:
Ep #560 (1968) - Julia - 'Yes. Yes, I don't want to, but I MUST.'

From "Robservations 7/15/02 - #560/561 - Ang Seduces Her New Victim"
Down in the basement, Julia looks through the suitcase full of journals. Willie comes down and she asks him to help her sort through the paperwork. Willie asks if they're going ahead with the experiment. Yes she says, we have to. It's crazy, maintains Willie, and she agrees he's right, but she's doing it. Willie says putting parts of the dead together is crazy and wrong.
Replies Julia, "I no longer know what is right or wrong, I only know what is necessary." (a classic Julia remark.)
The Robservations doesn't reference the quote but does its circumstances...

And this is the third quote from this ep. The first (Barnabas - 'Willie. You know you MUST do what you're told. Now, there's no way out for you') was back on December 17th, and the second (Joe - 'I guess you MUST be as curious about him as I am') was back on January 25th.

Apparently, when it comes to whatever Julia has to do, she "MUST" do it:

Yesterday, 2026 -

Ep #560 (1968) - Julia - 'Yes. Yes, I don't want to, but
I MUST.

Yesterday, 2025 -

Ep #537 (1968) - Julia - 'You go and get ready. We MUST
leave here before dawn. We MUST. Yes. I MUST.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #661 (1968) - Barnabas - 'Help me as you helped Vicki in transcending the barriers of time. A great wrong has been done in the past that MUST be rectified. Help me to rectify it.'

From "Robservations 9/24/02 - #660-661 - A Trip Back to the Past"
Vicki was led back to the past by Peter's spirit, says Barnabas, I will go the same way, for just one night--I will control time. Julia feels he's wrong surmising that. I will know what will happen before it happens, says Barnabas--and therefore change it. Julia points out that any number of things can change what happened, and they all represent grave danger for him--what if Forbes fires the arrow and strikes you in the heart?--you'll be dead and Forbes will have changed the course of history. It will never happen, insists Barnabas. You can't be sure, counters Julia--if you change one thing in the past, you can start a whole chain reaction that could lead to your own destruction. I know that, says Barn. Remember what you were then, she reminds him, when you come back--if you come back, will you be human or vampire?
Barnabas doesn't know, nor does he know how he'll return to the present--I'm willing to take the risks, he says--return to this spot in 48 hours. He refuses to let Julia stop him, or talk him out of it--I can't let Vicki die. Barnabas summons Peter Bradford's spirit--help me as you helped Vicki to transcend time's barrier--I must rectify a great wrong from the past--open the way for me, I implore you! says Barnabas, and suddenly, it appears that Julia has disappeared! We hear howling dogs, and Barnabas stands, fangs bared, dressed in his old 18th century outfit! He has returned to the past!
The Robservations paraphrase the quote a bit...

And, technically, this is the fifth quote from this ep. However, only the first (Barnabas - 'This time she went to the gallows and died. What I MUST do now is GO back a few hours before that time to save her') from back on January 5th of 2021 and this latest quote are from the new material because all the others appear in flashbacks to Ep #459.
