If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding June 2nd's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]June 2nd's quote:
Ep #164 (1967) - Dr. Guthrie - 'I can imagine what that MUST be for a painter.'

From "#0164/0165: Robservations 09/14/01: Laura's Looking Guilty"
Collinsport Inn restaurant - Please go right over, Maggie encourages Vicki and Guthrie, I'm sure he'd be delighted to see someone interested in his paintings! How's he feeling? asks Vicki. Ready to blow sky high because he can't work, says Maggie--his hands still haven't healed--my father had an accident, he burned his hands, she tells Guthrie. I'm sorry to hear that, he says--I can imagine what that must be for a painter--rather, I can't imagine. He's a little restless to put it mildly, says Maggie, but I'm sure it would help a lot if you went over to see him, Mr. Guthrie.

The Robservations references the quote perfectly...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding June 3rd's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]June 3rd's quote:
Ep #1222 (1841PT[-1967: Ep #258]) - Kendrick - 'I'm sorry, but I must insist. This is a most urgent matter.'

From "#1222/1223: Robservations 12/24/03: Morgan is Possessed"
Someone knocks at the door.  Quentin goes to answer it, but Julia says she'll go.  It's Kendrick Young, and even though Julia says she'd rather he didn't come in, he insists--this is a most urgent matter.  All right, for just a few moments, she agrees.  Kendrick enters and she glares at him.  What is it? she asks.  You know very well, he says--your nephew, Gabriel.  Has he been found? asks Quentin.  Kendrick says no, but he's decided he knows right where he is--here, at Collinwood.  Absurd, says Julia.  On the contrary, says Kendrick, the police have checked every mode of transportation, questioned many people, and the one fact they have come up with is that Gabriel is still in the area--yet still they cannot find him.  So Gabriel is missing and everyone thinks he's here, is that it? asks Quentin.  Yes, says Kendrick.  Did it ever occur to you or them, asks Quentin, that somebody else might be hiding him out?  Yes, it did, says Kendrick, but I doubt it--the logical place for him to be is right here.
He isn't here, insists Julia crisply--no one in the family has seen him

The Robservations references the second half of the quote quite well, but not the first half...

And this is the fourth quote from this ep. The first (Kendrick - 'Is Gabriel in the house or near the house? I MUST know') was back on May 12th of 2021, the second (Kendrick - 'Melanie, why are you crying, you MUST tell me') was back on October 30th of 2023, and the third (Julia - 'Morgan, Morgan you MUST come out of there at once) was back on March 21st. So all that means that Ep #1222 has joined the club with Eps #2, #3, #42, #44, #50, #52, #54, #66, #106, #119, #133, #158, #195, #208, #211, #212, #296, #300, #308, #315, #340, #365, #367, #377, #384, #405, #410, #426, #449, #450, #462, #466, #479, #481, #503, #506, #518, #528, #534, #543, #544, #545, #550, #608, #609, #629, #639, #643, #644, #646, #647, #651, #655, #678, #709, #717, #727, #734, #742, #743, #746, #750, #763, #764, #883, #884, #886, #889, #915, #926, #975, #976, #977, #993, #1006, #1011, #1014, #1025, #1057, #1064, #1081, #1111, #1125, #1126, #1127, #1128, #1197, #1199, #1206, #1218, #1223 and #1232. However, not only recall that Eps #42, #44, #52, #66, #133, #208, #211, #300, #367, #377, #384, #449, #466, #543, #544, #550, #609, #629, #639, #646, #678, #709, #727, #734, #742, #746, #915, #977, #993, #1057, #1111, #1197 & #1218 have five quotes, but Eps #66, #377, #384, #449, #646, #727, #915 & #993 have six quotes.

And just a reminder, we've seen notations like "1841PT[-1967: Ep #258]" before and in this case it means that the quote should have come from 1967's Ep #258 but that ep doesn't have any "must" lines to quote from. So, with that in mind, it means that Ep #258 now joins Eps #1, #5, #8, #12, #13, #22, #24, #28, #120, #124, #136, #138, #139, #141, #189, #198, #210, #217, #219, #223, #478, #659, #667, #690, #904 and #1008 as ones without any "must" lines.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding June 4th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]June 4th's quote:
Ep #417 (1796) - Barnabas - 'Josette, how can I say goodbye? How can I ever say goodbye to you. But I MUST. I MUST.'

From "Robservations 3/27/02 - Reunited and it Feels So Good - #417/418"
Josette sleeps. Barnabas enters her room, first as a bat, then transforms into himself. He gazes at her, says goodbye, and even as he's cautioning himself, moves closer. The door opens and before he can take action, Natalie, gasping, has spotted him!

The Robservations has less detail than normal and doesn't reference the quote. However, after Barnabas first appears in the room and says goodbye to Josette, against his better judgment he does indeed go around her bed to move closer to her. After that point is when he delivers the quote, and after that is when he moves back away just before Countess du Pres enters...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding June 5th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]June 5th's quote:
Ep #547 (1968) - Roger - 'Whoever she is, where did she come from? How did she get here? The house is at least a quarter of a mile from the road. She MUST have come up the path.'

From "Robservations 7/2/02 - Last-Ditch Efforts For Cass - #546/547"
Barnabas joins Roger in the foyer and the latter closes the doors. "It's simply incredible," says Roger, "that woman is dying." Roger wonders how she got there, she couldn't even speak--thank God Julia showed up. Barnabas asks if Roger was the only one who has seen her, and Roger says yes. What if she dies there, wonders Roger. "What if she does indeed?" asks Barnabas.

The Robservations has less detail than normal and doesn't reference the quote. However, it does reference the circumstances under which it's delivered...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding June 6th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]June 6th's quote:
Ep #684 (1969) - Chris - 'But if there were another werewolf around here before, it MUST have something to do with me.'

From "Robservations 10/10/02 - #684/685 - Mysterious Medallion; Braithewaite Fishes fo"
Barnabas and Chris gaze into the coffin. "It was an infant!" observes Barnabas, horrified. He withdraws a silver pentagram from the tiny casket. Chris notices that two of its points aim downward. Someone here, long, long ago, needed protection from a werewolf, notes Barnabas. Chris finds this news astonishing-surely, if there had been a werewolf, there would have been stories, legends, about it? They agree that, whatever happened, this is somehow connected to Chris' problem. Barnabas guesses the coffin is 50-75 years old, not the pine box of an earlier (my?) period. I wonder why it wasn't buried in the cemetery? Muses Chris. Was your family in Collinsport 50-75 years ago? Questions Barnabas. Yes, Chris said, but they wouldn't have known the Collins family.

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote. However, it does reference the circumstances under which it's delivered...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding June 7th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]June 7th's quote:
Ep #799 (1897) - Charity - 'Your wife MUST have been very young and very beautiful when she died.'

From "Robservations 1/6/03 - #798-799 - Losses"
Don't you know what happens to nice ladies who are in locked rooms with drunken bachelors? he asks.  You're a widower, she reminds him, which elicits a bitter comment from him.  He asks, do you know I'm also a father?--I say that because I don't know who has heard these things and who has not.  I didn't know, Charity says.  I AM a father, he says.  I had no idea, she says.  Does that frightens you? he asks.  No, it just makes me sad, she says--your wife must have been very young and beautiful when she died.  "So I'm told," says Quentin.  It's understandable that you didn't remarry, but I'm sure in time you will find that you do need someone, just as my father found out quickly after Mama died.  He needed JUDITH, I think, says Q tellingly.  Man isn't meant to live alone, says Charity, at least I've been told.

The Robservations references the quote almost perfectly...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding June 8th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]June 8th's quote:
Ep #929 (1969) - Paul - 'You MUSTN'T tell your mother that you saw me down here.'

From "Robservations 5/7/03 - #928-929 - Michael Returns; Paul in Too Deep"
Collinwood - Paul creeps downstairs and into the drawing room. He opens a drawer in an armoire (where any of the kids could find it) and takes out a gun. Hearing a door slam, he slips it into the pocket of his robe. Carolyn finds him--what are you doing here? she asks.  I thought I would move around a bit, he says--I'm feeling better. You look better, too, she says--I think it's wonderful. Looking a little loony, he says, I've discovered I'm allergic to the medication I'm taking, so I decided to stop taking it. I'm sure Mother will be delighted to see you're looking better, too.  Don't tell your mother you saw me down here, he says, you know how finicky Liz has been about my illness; she would say I'm up prematurely--you know what I mean. She agrees.

The Robservations references the quote well but not perfectly because, shamefully, it substitutes "Don't tell" for "You MUSTN'T tell"...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding June 9th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]June 9th's quote:
Ep #1026 (1970PT) - Liz - 'You MUST stop comparing yourself to her.'

From "#1026/1027: Robservations 07/18/03: Burning Eyes; Yaeger Stalks"
Maggie sits on her bed in her room. Liz comes over and begins to brush her hair. You make me feel like a little girl, says Maggie. Are you feeling better? ask Liz. Calmer, says Maggie. That's a beginning, says Liz. Not a beginning, counters Maggie, only an ending; I've got to accept that. You can't, says Liz. Tonight I wore a dress that belonged to Angelique, says Maggie-Quentin saw me in that dress, he saw so clearly the difference between Angelique and me, I don't blame him for getting angry, for running from the house and not coming back. I do, says Liz. You shouldn't, says Maggie, it's not his fault I'm not Angelique. You must stop comparing yourself to her, insists Liz. Would Quentin stop? asks Maggie--never--she's won and I must accept that. You mustn't, says Liz. I have no choice, says Maggie. Don't allow the dead to overcome the living, urges Liz. Please, says Maggie, I want to accept defeat, please don't make me fight anymore, I just want to rest.  She lies down on her bed.

The Robservations references the quote perfectly...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding June 10th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]June 10th's quote:
NoDS: Scene #126 (-1970: Ep #1087) - Strack - 'Angelique Collins, you have been condemned as a witch and you MUST die.'

From a combination of Grayson's and DC's scripts because DC didn't changed the names and Grayson didn't cross out material not shot:

                                             CUT TO:

126    EXT - BACK OF COLLINWOOD - DAY - HIGH ANGLE       126

The rain has finally stopped.  A heavy ground mist
now swirls about the great hanging tree.  Angelique
stands on a branch high up in the tree, a noose
about her neck.  She is held by two of the men.
                        Strack
Gabriel, Quentin, Trask and the other two men stand
below.  Samantha and Mrs. Castle watch from the
       veranda.  Laura

                             Strack
                 Angelique Collins, you have been
condemned as a witch and you must die
as a witch.  Let your soul be
returned to the pits of darkness
                 forever more.

                             Angelique
As I die, so shall all of you.  For
that will be my legacy --

                             Strack
I ask the good Lord to forgive your
                 blasphemy.  Prepare yourself for
                 eternity, witch.

       Angelique looks down at Charles.

       THE GROUP - ANGELIQUE'S P.OV.

ZOOM IN TO CLOSE-UP OF CHARLES as he looks up at her.

       WIDE ANGLE

With the house in the B.G., ZOOM IN TO THE UPSTAIRS
WINDOW OF SARAH'S ROOM, her face is pressed against
the glass, her eyes wide with fear.

And when it comes to Scene 126, things are actually quite different from the way they're scripted. However, the only thing that relates to the quote is that Strack delivers his lines as "Angelique Collins, you have been condemned as a witch and you must die. But your spirit will not live after you. For your earthly remains will hang here until your spirit returns to the pits of darkness forever more" rather than what's scripted. And, of course "forever more" should actually be spelled as one word: "forevermore".

And similar to what I've done in the past with NoDS and hoDS, I used a screen capture from the Laser Disc for NoDS -

- so that it would be in keeping with the dimensions of the screen captures from the original show, but this is what the Blu-ray looks like -

And Ep #1087 now joins Eps #1, #5, #8, #12, #13, #22, , #24, #120, #124, #136, #138, #139, #141, #145, #189, #198, #210, #217, #219, #223, #242, #478, #659, #667, #690, #904 and #1008 as ones without any "must" lines.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding June 11th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]June 11th's quote:
Ep #1158 (1840) - Mildred - 'She MUST have found out it's true, like all the rest of us have known all along. She's right to stay away.'

From "#1157/1158: Robservations 11/06/03: A Frightened Witch"
Daphne sleeps, and dreams, tossing her had back and forth on the pillow.  Where's Daphne? Quentin asks Mildred.  She must have found out it's true, she accuses, pointing a finger at him--like the rest of us have known all along--she's right to stay away, so she stays untainted by the likes of YOU!  No, she told me she'd come here, says Quentin--the execution's got to be put off until she gets here!  The execution is going on as scheduled, says Mildred, you can't keep everybody out there waiting.  (Her exaggerated gestures and eye movements are really funny.)  Daphne! calls Quentin--where are you?--you promised me you'd come here--why can't I see you one more time before I die, why?--Daphne?--Daphne!
-Daphne is in Gerard's arms, kissing him.  It's too late, says Gerard--besides, she doesn't care what happens from now on--there is no longer you and Quentin--from now on, it is you and me--you and me, Daphne--it doesn't matter whether he loses or not--isn't that right, Daphne?  She wakes up, breathing heavily--what did I dream, what was it? she asks...why can't I ever remember?

The Robservations references the quote almost perfectly...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding June 12th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]June 12th's quote:
DS 1991 Ep #8 (-1841PT) - Phyllis - 'The mistress MUSTN'T see me like this.'

From SHADOWS IN THE '90s: The Dark Shadows Concordance 1991 - PLOT SUMMARIES - EPISODE EIGHT
COLLINWOOD - 1991: Patterson pulls up in front of the
house. In the back seat is a dirty, disheveled Phyllis. She's
wearing a tattered shirt and wrapped in a blanket. Patterson
tries to coax her out of the car. Near hysteria, she insists that
he not touch her. Patterson tries to calm her. Upset, she cries,
"The mistress must not see me like this!" He assures her
Elizabeth is a very understanding woman. She finally leaves
the car - then runs away, whimpering with dread at the sight of
the vehicle. He assures her, "It's only a car. It's not going to
hurt you." He and his deputy try to guide her toward the
house - she breaks away and runs. They follow.

The summary paraphrases the quote a bit...

And as I've done previously when it comes to the '91 Series, I used a screen capture from the TGG Direct DVD release that's the same dimensions as the ones from the original series -

- because even though that release also doesn't have the correct color timing like the VHS release does -

- also like the VHS release, it has the correct aspect ratio, plus it even tends to show a bit more of the frame and it's clearer than the VHS.

And even though the MGM DVD release, like the TGG Direct release, tends to be clearer than the VHS, frustratingly, the aspect ratio is cropped from 4X3 to 16X9 -

And just a reminder, we've seen a notation similar to "DS 1991 Ep #8 (-1841PT)" before and in that case it meant that the quote should have come from an 1841PT ep but because there are no longer any 1841PT eps that haven't been quoted from, an alternate version of DS is being used instead. In this case that alternate version is the '91 DS and a quote from its Ep #8 is being used.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding June 13th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]June 13th's quote:
Ep #1168 (1840) - Lamar - 'If I can best serve our maker by testifying against Quentin Collins, then I MUST do so.'

From "#1167/1168: Robservations 11/14/03: An Amazing Revelation For Gerard"
Trask hands him the pistol.  Why are you giving this to me? asks Gerard--it won't be used until tomorrow morning--and I thought you were so intent on using it yourself.  I was just informed that I must appear in court tomorrow, says Trask--you're going to have to do it--it must be the will of God
--in my whole life, my one great ambition was to avenge my father's death--but if I can best serve our maker by testifying against Quentin, then I will do so.  There's only one thing we've overlooked, Gerard reminds him--we can't find Barnabas or his coffin.  I know, says Trask, but it can't be in the Old House, we searched it top to bottom.  Has it ever occurred to you there might be a secret room in the Old House? queries Gerard   I've thought of that, says Trask, but we can't find it--there's no mention of it in the diary.  I know, says Gerard, but I have found the secret room!--although I haven't been there yet--it occurred to me while searching for Barnabas that if there is a secret room, the one way to find it is look at the architect's drawings--well, I found those drawings, and tomorrow morning, we will find Barnabas Collins behind the bookcase of the drawing room of the Old House.

The Robservations paraphrases the quote and leaves out the "MUST" in the process - shameful...

However, the other "MUST"s in the excerpt do indeed appear in the ep and are quite likely to show up in future installments of the slideshow.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding June 14th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]June 14th's quote:
Ep #1045 (1970PT) - Will - 'I MUST be careful. Maggie says he's mad.'

From "#1044/1045: Robservations 07/31/03: Will's Sad Sacrifice"
1045

The Robservations for Ep #1045 doesn't summarize the teaser, which is a reworking of the ending of Ep #1044, staged slightly differently, but the quote is exactly the same. So, for what it's worth, here's the Robservations summary from Ep #1044:

From "#1044/1045: Robservations 07/31/03: Will's Sad Sacrifice"
Will, heading to the West Wing tower, warns himself, be careful--Maggie says he's mad--Quentin will know I'm on his side, he'll realize I want to help him...unless...unless somehow Angelique has changed him? He stands at the door and determinedly goes in.

While the Robservations doesn't reference the quote directly, it does get it quite closely...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding June 15th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]June 15th's quote:
Ep #961 (1970) - Barnabas - 'You will come to me, Megan. Come to me. You MUST.'

From "Robservations 5/30/03 - #960-961 - Hideous Kinky Bruno "
Old House - Barnabas summons Megan--wherever you are, my mind will reach you, you will know I need you, you will come to me! Come to me, Megan!  You must!

The Robservations switches up the quote a bit...

[spoiler]June 16th's quote:
Ep #857 (1897) - Petofin - 'Please, you MUST NOT send for the doctor, Edward! You MUST NOT!'

From "Robservations 3/20/03 - #856-857 - Trading Places; A Doxy Named Wanda"
Edward is skeptical about Petofi's claim that Quentin is still alive in 1969--I think I'd better call the doctor. No doctor, insists Petofi, grabbing Edward by the shoulders, he'll think me mad, and that would suit his plans perfectly, to have me confined where the gypsies could get me!--please, don't send for the doctor! Get hold of yourself, says Edward, promising not to call the doctor--I think you had better go home--and leads Petofi to the door. Believe me, please help me! begs Petofi. I promise to help you in every way I can, says Edward--go home and stop talking about these aberrations of yours--you're only hurting yourself. Petofi looks around the foyer before silently going (very sad to see him kicked out of his own home).

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote directly but does reference the circumstances under which it comes up...
