NIGHT OF THE IGUANA Screening in Norfolk, VA
« on: August 13, 2005, 08:43:11 AM »
DS fans living in the Norfolk, VA area will have a chance to see THE NIGHT OF THE IGUANA on the big screen.  As part of an Ava Gardner film retrospective, the Naro Cinema will be screening NOTI, featuring our very own Grayson Hall, on August 22, 2005 at 7:15 PM.

Link to the theater's website:  http://www.narocinema.com/

I've watched NOTI on home video several times, but I would love to see it on the big screen.  For those who haven't seen it, this is the perfect opportunity to enjoy Grayson's Oscar-nominated performance.

J-C or anyone in the know - question:
were Grayson and Ava Gardner good friends beyond "Night Of The Iguana"?  I can imagine while filming in Mexico, the two divas swapped stories, bummed cigarettes from each other, and commiserated on the off-camera goings-on with Liz & Dick et al. Any true anecdotes known to support this fantasy? They were so dicey in their scenes together...
Just caught Ava Gardner in an old episode of "Knots Landing" from 1985 - right around the time our beloved Grayson passed away.
"Squeezing more scathing irony out of a simple line reading than just about any actress alive, Gardner wraps her tongue around every syllable and tilts her head back to savor the flavor. On 'Knots Landing' she makes the innocent question, "Doesn't anybody carry cigarettes anymore?" sound like the most insinuating of inquiries."
Hall & Gardner: soul sisters? Get ready, Norfolk!

Sandor, I believe that Grayson was friends with Liz Taylor and Richard Burton, and that Liz's daughter's wedding was held at Grayson's house in the Hudson River Valley.

As for Grayson and Ava, I really don't know if they were friends.  I read Ava's autobiography and it did not include a single reference to Grayson, so I'm thinking that they probably weren't friends beyond the making of NOTI.

Grayson told a story about Ava Gardner being amazed at the realism of her telephone call acting in NOTI.  Ava wanted to know "how do you do that?" "Oh, it's simple," Grayson replied.  "I just imagine someone on the other side of the line saying words and then speak my lines in response accordingly." "Oh, my God!" Gardner is supposed to have shrieked, "that's TECHNIQUE!"  And then, according to the irrepressible redhead, the famous star ran down to the beach and threw herself into the ocean.

Bear in mind that Grayson was known for her faculty of exaggeration in storytelling...

Faboo story!  I know, from reading Ava's autobio, that she never considered herself to be a real actress and that she reveled in being lazy.  She actually thought her performance in NOTI was bad, and couldn't understand why she received good reviews for it.  So, I can believe that she'd have that sort of reaction to La Grayson.   ;D
