OT<Free (or REAL Cheap) Anti Virus
« on: March 26, 2016, 04:47:33 AM »
My McAfee is going to expire at the end of April.

Anyone know of a free and reputable anti-virus software? Or, very inexpensive?

Thanks,

Patti

Hi Patti,

I've seen recommendations for AVG which I believe is free.  I've been using Vipre, which was about $30, although that might have been a discount.

Yo!

Wha up MB?

But sleriously folks....

I've always been of the mindset that 'you get what you pay for'.

If I go with the above mentioned AVG, do they give a guarantee?

Also, the reputable ones: McAfee, Norton, and one other I'm forgetting are, as stated, reputable.

With a company I don't know, can they 'hack into my stuff'?

Has anyone ever dealt with AVG?

Josette, thank you my sweetest.

Patti

I would highly recommend Avast for anti-virus.

They have a free version that has worked great for me for 6 years or so.  The free version has little pop-up messages wanting you to upgrade about twice a week, but it's nothing very intrusive. It is FREE no hidden fees or trial before you're forced to buy... For real free. And I don't even work for them!! :)

I give it 5 out of 5. And it actually does find viruses and blocks trojan websites.

'forced' to buy? How long does the free one last for?

Have you had it free for six years?

Free forever!!

You just have to re-register it yearly with a valid e-mail address.

Like I said, it will ask you to upgrade, but it's not necessary... And you will not be forced to buy it.

Okay, I REALLLLLLY need to get protection.

Problem: every time I go on my computer, a pop-up from McAfee (who I had) pops up like 2-3 times.

I feel that if I try to DL Avast, McAfee will try to block it.

Can I disable? McAfee?

Is the website www.avastdotcom?

Thanks,

Patti

https://www.avast.com

And it's good for PC or Mac.

You might want to uninstall any old anti-virus before installing a new one to avoid any conflicts.

Hope it helps!!

Well, I uninstalled McAfee, then installed Avast.
I keep getting a message that the Avast is out of date; I click on update, but nothing happens.

Help!

I had avast for a few years and paid for the whole shebang.  It worked find for a couple years and I would renew my subscription and update.  Then, the last time, it completely messed up my computer; I couldn't even connect to the internet - avast blocked it.  I couldn't call avast because I found out it's based in Prague, Czech Republic.  There was no American contact.  It cost me $300 to set my computer back to rights.  Then I found out I couldn't remove avast from my hard-drive - it deliberately blocks attempts to do so.  Finally, by doing searches from many, many, many disgruntled "costumers" who also had mucho problems with the service how to do it.  My advice, from my experience, get rid of it, if you can.

Don't panic, Patti!  Avast might be different (and hopefully better) now.  I had an opposite experience with it.  Like I said, it worked fine at first and I was satisfied with it.  But then it glitched or something and wrecked my computer.  Just be cautious with it.  As they say, once learned, twice burned (or is it the other way around?).

There's two updates inside Avast. The program update, and virus definitions update.

Just make sure you've updated both...  I've used Avast for a long time without any troubles.

Let me know how it goes!
