Slight HODS long version update...
« on: August 20, 2004, 09:14:20 AM »
I mentioned in the HODS Long Version thread (and at the Fest) that there was a possibility that the Hong Kong release would also have been of the longer version the Japanese released...

I've been able to touch base with the Hong Kong Film Censorship Authority and have been given the lowdown on their release.

The Hong Kong release, sadly, was identical to the US release, running 8708 feet (97mins), and "was approved for public exhibition without further cuts, subject to the condition that it would be advertised as not suitable for children."

That narrows the search by quite a bit, leaving Japan the only known territory to release the longer cut, but at least this information came fairly easily.

More updates as they roll in.

Darren...I'm confused. Is the 'shorter' version the one you mention with the terrible editing (and cutting out great scenes)?

Thanks,

Patti

Also, how would Japan have a different version (or Hong Kong for that matter...)?

Hi Patti.

Any references I make to the 'shorter' version of HODS simply means the standard 97min version that was released in the US and is the only version released on video or known to physically exist at this point...

Japan and Asian territories have been known to receive stronger, more graphic versions of US films, which are more acceptable to Asian audiences, when made available by the studios. Mostly this occurred in the last few decades but recent films like JOHNNY MNEMONIC and KILL BILL VOL. 1 continued the trend.
