Mixed marriage

Did it occur to anyone that Josette was Catholic being that she crossed herself at the grave of Jeremiah, being from Martinique and all, and Barnabas being a Yankee Protestant would have had any reservations about marrying. Especially with Joshua and Abigail having anything to do with the matter.

Interesting that you should bring this up. Earlier in the episode where Barnabas was choking, a medal of St. Pierre (Peter) was brought out by Josette to have at his bedside. Yes, Both incidents gave the impression that Josette was a Catholic. Who married Josette & Jeremiah?  Wasn't Barnabas off to make arrangements with the local Minister when he was about to marry Josette? Religious affiliation of individuals in DS is left uncertain. It is not something that is identified clearly because the writers apparently considered it incidental to the storyline.

Perhaps they thought it incidental, and perhaps they were trying to fly under the radar of the Archdiocese of New York.

Let's remember how long ago this was....and how many things you could not do, and could not say, and could not show on television.

I have no doubt this show in particular was under constant scrutiny to be sure they were not crossing that invisible line between what you could get away with, and what would generate a call from the Network. After all, the whole premise of it was the Supernatural and that was shaky ground.

It was obviously okay to hint at the DuPre's Catholicism...after all, they were French.  But they had to be very very careful that they didn't emphasize it too much, or offense might have been taken, causing the production no end of trouble.

I suspect that's the real reason the exorcism was so lame and bore no resemblance to the real thing.  THAT might have prompted a call from Cardinal Spellman.

Well, although, I am hesitant to get into religion here, I suspect that it would have been blatantly obvious to Barnabas and Joshua that Josette was Catholic.  And if it wasn't obvious right away, it would have become so when it came time to discuss dowries, marriage contracts, and settlements.

All that money and the likelihood of a profitable business alliance probably would have eased any concerns Joshua had and he most likely would have told Abigail to keep her trap shut should she been inclined to make any ill-considered remarks about the Papists
