NBC Picks Up Dracula Series
« on: May 13, 2013, 12:52:49 AM »
Well, TV vampires have another vamp to join them. According to Zap2it.com, NBC will officially announce tomorrow during their Upfront Presentation (the announcement of the shows that will appear on NBC next season) that they've picked up their Jonathan Rhys Meyers version of Dracula for the fall, and it will be slated at 10pm on Fridays, following Grimm.

Many members here have said that they've often thought JRM could make for an interesting Barnabas, so it's going to be quite intriguing to see his take on Dracula.

And here's a link to an article from back in February that provided some casting news as well as a brief synopsis of the show's premise:

'Dracula' casts Thomas Kretschmann as Van Helsing

'Dracula' trailer: Jonathan Rhys Meyers leads two lives in 1890s London on NBC

Oh, my - it looks beyond intriguing. Plus the Downton Abbey and Tudors pedigree can't hurt.

And in addition to the changes we'd already known about, the change in Renfield looks interesting as well. Could be loads of fun if done right. We just have to hope NBC lets it find an audience and doesn't pull it after 2 eps if it doesn't get big ratings right out of the gate.

Wow. Like Coppola's version, this seems much closer to the spirit (and actual feel of the time and place setting) of the original Stoker novel than most Dracula adapations have been. (And like Coppola's, this one is borrowing the Dracula-sees-Mina-as-his-lost-bride angle that we got in the Dan Curtis TV movie.) As much as I love the 1958 Hammer version, it seemed to set a precedent for staging Dracula stories in some vague "Hammer gothic" time and place that felt like it never actually existed.

Wondering how far they can take this in a weekly series. I suppose they'll have all manner of tangential plots cropping up to keep the heroes from finding and vanquishing the title character.

Notice how Dracula inherited the very same time slot that Dark Shadows had back in 1991. I will be interested to see what kind of ratings it gets but I'm afraid it won't fare any better than Dark Shadows - especially considering the current state of NBC in general. Ironic also that it will most likely go up against Blue Bloods. LOL.

Given that TV watching is much more fragmented today than it was back then, when it comes to viewership at least, Dracula doesn't have any chance at all to fare even as well as DS did back in '91. In fact, NBC would probably be thrilled if Dracula even manages to capture half the viewing audience that watched DS. And they would certainly be thrilled if Dracula grabbed the highest demos in its time period, the way that DS most often did.

Ironic also that it will most likely go up against Blue Bloods. LOL.

Yes! And what's also interesting with Blue Bloods is that even though it's routinely the #1 show on Fridays, it doesn't even manage the viewership that DS had. So, it's going to be fascinating to see how things play out come September...
