At the Blue Whale - Naughty Boys
« on: February 08, 2003, 04:44:11 AM »
[hello] Loved the conversation between Quentin and Aristede at the Blue Whale.  When Quentin said to A something about being unbelievable and A said , "The two of us sitting here discussing what we are discussing --don't you think that is unbelievable?  Just the dry irony of A's reply made me laugh aloud.  That two intelligent men could discuss werewolves and magic hands in a tavern and be completely serious struck me as very amusing. Also A asked Q if that was a gun he was hiding beneath his coat!  HaHa

Where are they getting these bodies, Mulder,  are they making them?

Didn't Mae West use the line~

"Is that a gun you're hiding or are you just happy to see me?"  Maybe the writers used innuendo again to explain the orientation of Aristede. Since women and children were watching the show back then, it went over everyone's head.

Hey gang,

Your analysis of the conversation between Aristede and Quentin in the Blue Whale almost brings new meaning to the Steely Dan song, "With A Gun":

"I could be wrong but I have seen your face before.
You were the man that I saw running from his door.
You owed him money, but you gave him something
more.
With a gun!  With a gun!
You will be what you are just the same.

You were the founders of the clinic in the hill.
Until he caught you with your fingers in the till.
He slapped your hand, so you settled up your bill.
With a gun!  With a gun!"
Did you pay the other man with the piece in your
hand, and leave him lying in the rain?"

I don't think Aristede is gay, considering the way he was turned-on by Angelique. I do think that Petofi is an abusive father figure for Aristede, who obviously grew up being abused and is comfortable (for lack of a better word) being in that subserviant role. I know at some point we learn that Aristede can hardly bare to think of a life without Petofi, telling him how to live it.

What a very astute observation, Dom.

I was thinking that SOMEONE on that show finds that particular kind of relationship intriguing.....it's the exact same relationship Willie has with Barnabas....and (from their point of view) it was missing in this plot line and needed to be re-introduced.

rainey....who very much misses Willie.....but could do without that relationship

I agree that Aristede is not gay but Petofi probably is.  Aristede is a kept boy and to keep his nice clothes and elegant lifestyle he will do whatever it takes.

I see Count Petofi as sexually omnivorous:  women, young men, unicorns ...

It would seem that Violet Welles, who created the good Count, was very well read in the more obscure byways of 1890s literature.  The Count always struck me as a cross between Oscar Wilde and Aleister Crowley.  I do love the stories about Lord Kitchener, the deliciously rolled-out epigrams, the homburg and cigars.  His fondness for Mozart always struck me as a tip of the hat to Christopher Isherwood's Mr. Norris.

Yes, DS could be surprisingly literate for a soap opera that was widely regarded as just the latest teeny-bopper craze...

In answer to Jennifer's question, "where were the intelligent men?", while neither A or Q were the sharpest knives (pun intended) in the drawer, they were not idiots.  It just struck me as funny as A said that they could have a conversation about such obviously way out subjects as werewolves and magic hands with straight faces!

In my view, both may be "sexually omnivorous" ... but Aristede is the one who displays stereotypical "gay" mannerisms.

I thought Stroika was doing a sendup of Gloria Swanson when his hands flew to his face when Petofi threatened to spoil that "beautiful face you love so much" (or words to that effect). His subservience to Petofi seems to have sexual undertones to me, if we want to apply real-life psychology to the characters.
