I must have missed something . . . why did Barnabas decide that Maggie should be the life force? What's she got to do with it? Surely they realize that, if the experiment works correctly, the life force giver will die?

Well, he does have a change of heart soon enough...however, right now I think a) he's still ticked off at her because she wouldn't cooperate and become Josette, and b) he's worried that she might suddenly wake up one morning and remember that he basically tortured her, and held her captive in a cell in his basement for days on end. I'm sure he thinks that if she's dead, his secret is safe.
His logic is faulty, though...Collinsport is the one place on earth where dead people can talk nearly as much as live ones.
