Wasn't it just Bill Gates who canceled his facebook profile because he got overwhelmed by friends requests?  If it wasn't him, it was some big name; it was on the news maybe earlier this week or at the end of last week.

One of the problems celebrities have either hosting their own website (such as JF) or having facebook pages is that many fans expect an answer to their post or email privately or publicly.  When that doesn't happen, fans have been known to get hostile about it.  Sometimes it's just easier not to get involved.

I'm surprised any famous people go on Facebook at all.   It's no different from going on message boards, which they don't do, except those would be easier.   No "friend requests", you just drop in to say something if you feel like it, and people answer if they feel like it.

False intimacy can be hard on a person.   It's like being alone in a crowd.
