Not to get off-topic, but this was actually part of one of the "Marilyn Ross" DS novels--- Barnabas adopted a little girl and raised her to become Josette.  Of course, it didn't work out.  But, thinking it over, it WAS quite the CREEPIEST plot in ALL those books!!!
