I was completely puzzled by today's appearance of the floating jar of mayo (at first I thought it might be a jar of "Fluff") here on the boards, until I viewed the daily slide show and realized that today is the anniversary of Mrs Johnson's epic roast beef sandwich encounter in the Collinsport Inn.

"Is the mayonnaise FRESH?  I ALWAYS make my own!"

Perhaps tomorrow we'll have the dime with which Mrs J tipped Maggie Evans after her meal.  "There's ten cents for your trouble, my dear.  You've been very kind.  Now don't spend it all in one place!"  KLS is priceless in that scene--and Clarice deserved an Emmy!

I wondered too!   And then she gave a jar to ME (and wiped out the HUGE post I was working on...)  and I got a big boost in my karma curses!  Thanks, Mrs. J!!!!!  (I had saved the post in Word... ;D)

Well Mrs. J. is killing me!!!  I can get -191 curses but then she adds 1010 to my cure!  Since curses are better than cures on THIS board, I'm doomed, right?  LOL  I seem to be a sucker for these silly games.  If I don't attack the floating jar, it just pesters me. ;)

Many fans consider it to be one of the funniest scenes in the history of DS. (One of the forum's mods certainly does.) And it's all the funnier because of how straight Clarice plays it.  :D

Oh, not at all! Once you've been around for a while, you'll realize that floaties like the mayo jar can and will pop up at some of the oddest times.  ;D

:D I was totally confused.  I'm relatively new to the boards and I see this floating mayonnaise jar.  Although I loathe pop-ups, I thought it was one of those and for some strange reason I clicked it and was "rewarded" with curses.  Darn that Mrs. J.

Thanks for the fun!

You're not alone. I am also new here and  I was afraid if I smacked the jar  I would be blessed with ads for mayonnaise in my e-mail for the next 6 years...I hit one by accident and realized it was this curse/cure 'game' that I still have not found the rules for.....

I am having a great time on this board too.......

And I have only just now realized ... that the slideshows represent an anniversary at ALL!

The slideshows began back on June 27, 2005 as a buildup to DS' 40th anniversary and were originally intended to be a one-time thing. But there were some requests to replay them a second time, so we are.  :)

New members who might have missed the explanation can check out:

Today In DS History

on the Testing board. I've stickied it (it's currently the 8th topic down) to make it easier to find.  ;)

The Mayonnaise Benefactor.

If only I'd thought to change my username to that in honor of this special time in DS history.  [wink2]

i didn't "log in" yesterday so i missed the floating jar of mayo.phoey!

indeed the mayonnaise encounter was a priceless scene.

i recall reassurences on maggie's part that the mayo was as "fresh as a daisy" and that she had just opened the jar herself that morning.

but mrs.j was having none of it! :P

Personally, I wouldn't eat home-made mayonnaise if it was prepared in a sterilized Petri dish and served by someone in a surgical gown.  Gimme the Kraft jar..... :P
