They're both great. The Addams Family did have more "meaning" to it though-- a sort of counter-culture sensibility, saying that the weirdos were really the cooler and more interesting ones, and not to be stigmatized for it. This even came out for all to see, in the episode with the motorcycle guy who had to hide and recover in their house.
As for laughs vs. thinking, I find that it's not a matter of one vs. the other. They're not mutually exclusive. I think that you get more and sometimes bigger laughs from stuff that has intelligence and thought put into it. But then, the Munsters had its share of that too.
