Jason MacGuire
« on: July 21, 2004, 01:16:06 AM »
Jason is one of my favorites.  I love his blackmail storyline with Liz.  Great acting and, like Jonathan Frid, Dennis Patrick had great chemistry with much of the cast.

Should I feel guilty, though, for finding him so attractive?  That wolfish smile was oddly endearing. I love a good villain  :)

Dennis' bonus interview on the DVD set (I think it was on set two -- not sure though) was great.  He told a cute story where he'd be doing scenes with John Karlen who would then start emulating his brogue.   Funny stuff.

John Karlen returned the favor when he appeared (along with several others from DS) on that silly SoapNet talk show.

He described how Dennis Patrick would do almost anything to make him laugh during filming, and that he (Karlen) would resort to biting his cheek bloody not to laugh out loud.

Imagine having that much fun at work......!!

I don't know if you've seen the Leviathan storyline yet but DP plays a character so different than that of Jason MacGuire.  He's also excellent during that segment of the show. What a talented actor he was.

John Karlen & Dennis Patrick did have great chemistry -- must have been hilarious watching them crack each other up.

I haven't seen the Leviathan eps yet either.  It's meant to be quite Loftcraftian, right?

Dumb overall (IMHO), but there's some good parts.

Inexplicable, but great.

It has been a long time since I saw the Leviathan storyline. But I thought I'd give it a go in answering your questions.

No, Mr. Patrick doesn't speak with a brogue accent for this character, and I don't think he and John Karlen had any scenes together, unfortunately, they were so much fun to watch act together.

Even if you've heard that the Leviathan storyline is dumb, go into it with an open mind.  You might even really enjoy it.  It has it's faults to be sure.  There's even a character named Buffy Harrington! And, OMG, John Yeager! This storyline was rich with characters IMO.

While most seem to dislike Leviathan, there do seem to be a few around who really like it, so I agree with the keep an open mind approach.

I just thought I'd mention that John Yeager and and Buffy Harrington come from 1970 PT which follows Leviathan.

I loved the Jason/ Liz storyline :)  I thought it was interesting that there was another storyline that was independent  of  the Barnabas intro storyline ..my guess is they weren't sure how long the Barnabas plot would last haha and probably
Barnabas would have been killed instead of Jason
... John Karlen said he would bite the inside of his mouth when it came to doing a scene with Dennis Patrick.  The diologue with Jason and Liz was great ...the sarcastic humor by both..Dennis' portrayal of Paul Stoddard was also excellent..He never did play a charecter in the past did he?

The Leviathans story kind of fell apart, but I still enjoy it, especially in its early stages, as it was cranking into gear. The strange breathing in the closed room always gave me a good ole case of the creeps. I very much appreciate the fact that DS ventured into H. P. Lovecraft territory, even if they didn't quite nail it. It was great to see Barnabas as a menacing figure again, and there were moments of excellent acting, especially between Carolyn and her father.

By golly you're right!  I seem to have mixed up storylines.  Another senior moment  ;D  I definitely had two distinct senior moments at work today! Geez I can't wait for the festival!!! In twelve days I'll be on my way to Tarrytown.

I loved Dennis Patrick on DS. He made Jason McGuire a very memorable character, one of the show's most charming villians (second only to Humbert Allen Astredo's Nicholas Blair). At times he can actually made me LIKE him until the kicker:
he made the whole thing up about Elizabeth killing Paul and him burying him. Elizabeth confined herself into Collinwood for so many years all for nothing because of Jason's big fib!
I found myself thinking, oh gosh, how could I ever have liked this guy! He's despicable!

Now THAT is the work of a great actor.

I liked him as Paul Stoddard too (talk about irony!) but felt they
killed him off too soon.
Would have loved to have seen more scenes with him and Carolyn getting to know each other and his scenes with Elizabeth once the Leviathan story was at an end.
